For a fast start in Elden Ring Nightreign, clear the small camp near your landing point, spend the runes at the nearby Site of Grace, then take a short route through enemies and bosses your team can defeat efficiently. Keep checking the map as the Night’s Tide closes in, and stop farming in time to reach the night encounter. Bandai Namco recommends beginners aim for level 5 or higher before the first night and level 10 or higher before the second; these are pacing targets, not guarantees.

What “max level” means in Nightreign

Each expedition starts at level 1. During the run, you spend Runes at Sites of Grace to raise your chosen Nightfarer’s level. The game increases stats automatically according to that character’s growth; you do not allocate individual stats. Leveling and preparing your equipment happen as part of the expedition’s three-day cycle.

Bandai Namco’s beginner and starter guides explain how to level and offer night-by-night targets, but do not state an exact expedition level cap or rune total. So there is no official cap or exact amount of Runes to reach it to rely on here. The practical goal is to build levels quickly without sacrificing the time and resources needed to survive the night encounters.

A fast, safe leveling route

  1. Clear the small camp near your landing point. Most landing areas are near a camp and a Site of Grace. The camp usually provides enough Runes for an early level, along with weapons. For newer players, Bandai Namco recommends clearing the camp together rather than splitting up.
  2. Spend your Runes at the nearby Site of Grace. Runes do not raise your level until you spend them at a Grace. Level as soon as you have enough rather than carrying a growing balance through unnecessary risks.
  3. Pick worthwhile targets your team can defeat quickly. Stronger enemies and bosses yield more Runes, but they also take longer and pose a greater risk. Choose high-value fights when your team can handle them efficiently; leave a fight that is repeatedly causing deaths or consuming too much of the day.
  4. Use the map to route around the Night’s Tide. The Tide contracts the safe area toward a nighttime boss, and its direction changes between days. Check the map often, use efficient traversal options, and stop detouring as the safe route closes. Dying in the Tide can make recovering dropped Runes especially difficult.
  5. Take Rune bonuses when they fit your route. Relics and per-expedition character upgrades can increase Rune acquisition. Treat these as useful bonuses, not a guaranteed multiplier: the official guidance does not give a universal percentage or promise a specific bonus in every run.
  6. Use the night targets as checkpoints. Bandai Namco’s beginner guidance suggests level 5 or higher for the first night and level 10 or higher for the second. Reaching those levels is not a guarantee of victory; weapons, healing, and effective boss play still matter.

How to choose between farming routes

There is no single best route established for every expedition. Locations, enemies, Tide direction, and team capability change the value of each detour. Compare potential objectives by the Rune reward you can reasonably earn for the time and risk involved, rather than trying to clear every landmark.

  • Reward versus time: A strong enemy is worthwhile only if its Rune yield justifies the time it takes to defeat.
  • Death risk: A route that repeatedly gets a player killed can erase its gains through lost levels and dropped Runes.
  • Grace access: Favor routes that let you return to a Site of Grace to spend Runes instead of carrying them through a long, risky detour.
  • Tide timing: Account for the safe area’s direction and closing pace; a lucrative objective is not worthwhile if it leaves the team stranded.
  • Combat readiness: Consider whether an objective also provides useful equipment, healing, or materials, not just Runes.

Team play, shared Runes, and deaths

By default, enemy Runes are shared equally among teammates, regardless of who lands the kill. A team can divide objectives without one player losing the kill’s Rune reward, but newer players should generally stay together for damage and defense. Moving quickly matters, but so does knowing when the group should avoid a fight.

A death can cost a level and cause you to drop carried Runes. Recover them before dying again; if an enemy takes the dropped Runes, defeating that enemy returns them. Weigh the recovery route against the Tide and the risk of another death rather than making a dangerous detour automatically.

Two-player expeditions were added in patch 1.02, whose notes say balance adjusts to the current number of players. Choose objectives that fit your party’s size and ability rather than assuming a route suited to another team configuration will work just as well.
