Elden Ring Nightreign was revealed in December 2024 as a standalone, multiplayer-focused action-survival game set in the Elden Ring universe. It is not an expansion and does not require the original game. Players can venture alone or form a team of three for short runs across a shifting map; the game later launched worldwide on May 30, 2025.
What was announced at The Game Awards 2024?
Nightreign was presented at The Game Awards 2024. Bandai Namco’s official announcement page is dated December 13, 2024, and FromSoftware’s debut announcement carries that date too. The publisher framed it with the campaign line “As Night Falls, We Rise in a New ELDEN RING Adventure.” Bandai Namco’s announcement described a new multiplayer co-op action-survival game from FromSoftware, initially planned for 2025.

The original announcement listed PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC via Steam. FromSoftware later confirmed the worldwide release date as May 30, 2025. FromSoftware’s release announcement also clarified the game’s editions and that it can be played without the base Elden Ring.
What is Elden Ring Nightreign?
It is a separate game that reworks selected elements of Elden Ring into a session-based survival structure. Players choose Nightfarers, characters with distinct abilities, and explore Limveld, a changing map, through a three-day-and-night cycle. The Night’s Tide shrinks the playable area, putting pressure on teams to balance exploration and combat. Runs build toward increasingly dangerous bosses and a final confrontation with a Nightlord.

Some familiar weapons, enemies and setting elements return, but Nightreign also introduces unique characters and new threats. Its structure and focus differ from the original action RPG: this is not simply another area or story chapter added to Elden Ring.
Is Elden Ring Nightreign a DLC or a standalone game?
Nightreign is a standalone game, not DLC that requires Elden Ring. You can buy and play it without owning the original. The publisher’s reveal announcement and FromSoftware’s release and edition announcement both establish its separate-game status.
There is also an add-on called The Forsaken Hollows. Bandai Namco’s current game page lists it as including two additional Nightfarers, two bosses, an additional Shifting Earth and more. That add-on listing does not include the base game, so check the platform store’s product description before buying to make sure you are selecting the game or content you want.

Can you play Nightreign solo or with friends?
Yes. You can play alone or cooperatively in a team of up to three. Bandai Namco Europe’s launch guide says solo mode does not require an online connection.

Official launch information establishes the available party sizes, but does not establish that one mode is easier or better balanced than the other.
Does Nightreign have crossplay?
No cross-platform crossplay is available, according to Bandai Namco Europe’s launch guide. Players can play across generations within the same console family: PS4 with PS5, and Xbox One with Xbox Series X|S. That does not allow a PlayStation player to join an Xbox or PC player.

Is there a physical PS5 edition of Nightreign?
Yes. FromSoftware’s February 2025 release announcement documented physical Standard Editions for PS5 and PS4, as well as digital versions. It also described a boxed Collector’s Edition for PS5 and PS4. Collector’s Edition contents listed at announcement were the game, a 25 cm Wylder statue, a 40-page hardcover artbook, steelbook, character card set, digital soundtrack and planned additional DLC. The announcement said package quantities were limited at launch; it does not establish current stock.

What happened after the reveal?
The 2025 release date replaced the reveal’s original “2025” window. Later, FromSoftware and Bandai Namco reported that Nightreign had shipped more than five million units worldwide as of July 2025, including digital and Steam downloads. That is a dated milestone, not a current lifetime total. The July 24, 2025 announcement gives the figure and its timeframe.
