Elden Ring Nightreign added its official “Two Player Expeditions” option in patch 1.02, issued July 31, 2025—not July 30, as originally announced. The update lets players begin an expedition as a duo, with the game’s balance adjusting to the number of players.
When did Nightreign’s duo mode come out?
Bandai Namco originally announced July 30, 2025, for the update. Distribution was postponed to July 31 after a tsunami warning following an earthquake near the Kamchatka Peninsula, according to contemporaneous GamesRadar+ coverage. Bandai Namco’s official patch 1.02 notes are dated July 31.

What changed in patch 1.02?
Two-player expeditions
Patch 1.02 lets an expedition start with two players. The setting previously called “Expedition Type” was renamed “Number of Players.” Bandai Namco says game balance adjusts to the current player count, but the notes do not specify numerical changes to enemy health, damage, or difficulty.
Relic management updates
- Relic Effect filtering became more precise.
- The number of registrable relic presets increased to 100.
- Players gained options to sell or favorite acquired relics in rewards and purchasing menus.
How do you get the duo option?
Patch 1.02 targeted PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, and Steam. Bandai Namco says online play requires the update. Download and apply it, then restart the game; the player-count choice is available when setting up an expedition.

Why did duos arrive after launch?
Before release, game director Junya Ishizaki acknowledged the omission in a PC Gamer interview published July 25, 2025: “We kind of overlooked and neglected the duos aspect,” he said, “but this is something that we are looking at and considering for post-launch support.” Patch 1.02 delivered that option shortly after launch.
