PS5 Pro Specs: What the 2024 Leak Reported—and What Sony Confirmed

The March 2024 PS5 Pro specs report was a leak, not a Sony spec sheet. Here’s how its claims compare with Sony’s later announcement.

The March 17, 2024 Insider Gaming report described leaked PS5 Pro specifications, not a Sony-confirmed spec sheet. Sony later announced the console with 67% more GPU compute units, 28% faster memory, and rendering up to 45% faster than the standard PS5. The report’s detailed figures are useful context, but they should not be confused with the final specifications Sony chose to publish.

What did the March 2024 report claim?

Tom Henderson’s March 17, 2024 report for Insider Gaming described information circulating before Sony had announced PS5 Pro. It said the reported details followed earlier leaks about GPU specifications and performance targets. These were pre-release claims, not figures Sony had confirmed.

Memory, CPU and audio claims

The report put PS5 Pro memory bandwidth at 576 GB/s (18 GT/s), compared with 448 GB/s (14 GT/s) for the standard PS5, and characterized the difference as a 28% increase. It also described the Pro memory as more efficient. For the CPU, the report said the underlying CPU was identical to the standard console but could use a high-frequency mode reaching 3.85 GHz. It claimed that mode gave more power to the CPU while downclocking the GPU by about 1.5%, with roughly 1% lower GPU performance. The report also claimed a 35% increase in audio performance.

GPU and graphics claims

The article repeated earlier reported GPU targets: rendering 45% faster than PS5, ray tracing two to three times faster—and four times in some cases—and 33.5 teraflops. It also described 30 work group processors (WGPs), against 18 in standard PS5, specialized BVH8 rather than BVH4 traversal shaders, and an AI accelerator.

  • Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
  • Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.

The report associated the AI hardware with PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR), an upscaling and antialiasing feature, and said a future software development kit was planned to support resolutions up to 8K. That was a reported development target, not a promise that games would render at 8K or achieve any particular frame rate.

Storage and disc-drive prediction

The report predicted 1TB of storage and a detachable disc drive. Sony’s eventual announcement differed on both points: the announced console has a 2TB SSD and is disc-less, with a compatible Disc Drive available separately.

What Sony later confirmed about PS5 Pro

In its September 10, 2024 announcement, Sony Interactive Entertainment said PS5 Pro has 67% more GPU compute units than the current PS5, 28% faster memory, and enables rendering up to 45% faster. Sony described ray tracing as operating at double, and at times triple, the speeds of the current console. It also announced PSSR as an AI-driven upscaling technology.

Those figures are Sony’s company claims, not independent benchmark results. Sony says the benefits are available only in select games enhanced for PS5 Pro and vary by game. The announcement does not establish a general performance result for every game or confirm every number in the earlier leak report.

Sony announced a 2TB SSD, a DualSense controller, and a disc-less configuration. PS5 Pro launched on November 7, 2024. The difference between the leaked 1TB prediction and Sony’s announced 2TB capacity is one clear example of why the pre-release report should not be treated as the final specification sheet.

PS5 Pro and standard PS5 compared

Feature Standard PS5 PS5 Pro
GPU compute units Sony’s September 2024 announcement uses this as the baseline; it does not state a unit count in the cited announcement. 67% more than the current PS5, according to Sony’s September 2024 announcement.
Memory Sony’s September 2024 announcement says the Pro memory is 28% faster; the March 2024 Insider Gaming report claimed standard PS5 bandwidth of 448 GB/s (14 GT/s). 28% faster memory than the current PS5, according to Sony’s September 2024 announcement. The earlier Insider Gaming report claimed 576 GB/s (18 GT/s).
Rendering Baseline for Sony’s comparison; no absolute rendering rate stated in the cited announcement. Up to 45% faster rendering, according to Sony’s September 2024 announcement.
Ray tracing Baseline for Sony’s comparison; no absolute speed stated in the cited announcement. Double, and at times triple, the speed of the current PS5, according to Sony’s September 2024 announcement.
Internal storage Not stated in the cited September 2024 PS5 Pro announcement. 2TB SSD, according to Sony’s September 2024 announcement.
Disc drive Not stated in the cited September 2024 PS5 Pro announcement. No built-in disc drive; compatible Disc Drive sold separately, according to Sony’s announcement and setup guide.

The numbers in this table are not a like-for-like benchmark: the bandwidth figures came from a pre-release report, while the performance comparisons came from Sony’s later announcement.

Does PS5 Pro have a disc drive?

No. PS5 Pro is disc-less as sold. Sony’s separately purchased Disc Drive supports PS5 and supported PS4 physical discs, as well as 4K Blu-ray and DVD playback. Sony’s November 7, 2024 setup guide explains the drive and console setup.

What can you transfer or reuse?

Sony says PS5 Pro is compatible with currently available PS5 accessories. Its setup guidance also explains how to move an M.2 SSD installed in an original PS5 into PS5 Pro. That guidance does not establish compatibility for every aftermarket SSD model, so check the model against Sony’s requirements before transferring or buying one.

Is PS5 Pro worth upgrading to?

There is no universal answer in the cited specifications. The practical case depends on whether the games you play have PS5 Pro enhancements, whether your display can show the image-quality or frame-rate improvements those games offer, and whether those improvements justify the cost for you. Sony’s performance claims are maximum or comparative claims, and the company says results vary by enhanced game; they do not establish what a particular title will deliver.

For an upgrade decision, check the PS5 Pro enhancement details for the games you actually play, then weigh those against your current PS5 setup, your need for a separately purchased disc drive, and the value you place on the additional 2TB SSD capacity.

What the leak got right—and what it cannot prove

The March report’s 28% memory increase and up-to-45% rendering claim align with figures Sony later announced. That alignment does not make all of the report’s other numbers official. Sony’s published announcement supports the broader GPU, memory, rendering, ray-tracing and PSSR claims, while the specific 576 GB/s bandwidth, 3.85 GHz CPU mode, 35% audio gain, 33.5 teraflops, WGP count, BVH traversal details and 8K SDK target remain claims from the pre-release report in the sources cited here.

No independent benchmark figure is established by these sources. Treat Sony’s announced performance figures as vendor claims and the additional technical details as attributed pre-release reporting, rather than as independently measured results or guaranteed game performance.
