Keep the Punies together with the Puni Orb, solve the switches in this order—Sun → Moon → Puni → Star—and use Flurrie’s gust where the group needs repositioning.
Which version does this walkthrough cover?
This guide is for the Nintendo Switch remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, released on May 23, 2024. Nintendo lists a physical edition and notes revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack, updated quick-travel pipes, and a Partner Ring for swapping partners. Nintendo’s product page identifies the Switch release. This is a progression guide, not a verified room-by-room comparison with the GameCube version.
How do you guide the Punies through the Great Tree?
The Puni Orb is central to the chapter: place it to gather the Punies, then keep the group with Mario as you work through the tree. The chapter’s route includes a point where Mario is caught in a cage; use his paper ability to escape and continue onward.
At specific progression points, put the Puni Orb on a pedestal and use Flurrie’s gust to move the Punies onto a giant stump. Later, guide the group farther through the tree to continue downward. Keep them together while navigating: the group is part of solving the area’s progression, not just a following party.

What is the Great Tree switch order?
- Observe the symbol sequence in the room that shows the required order.
- Return to the four switches and hit them in this order: Sun, Moon, Puni, Star.
- Once the sequence is matched, continue through the opened way to the chest containing the Super Boots.
The Super Boots add the ground-pound/Spin Jump progression used in the walkthrough’s later exploration. If you are unsure which switch represents a symbol, revisit the sequence display before pressing the switches again.
How can you avoid scaring the Punies during a Pider encounter?
When a Pider appears while the Punies are with you, the chapter guide’s specific tactical tip is to use Koops to hit it from a distance so the Punies do not get scared. This is an encounter-specific suggestion, not a universal requirement for every battle.

What should you do if you lose track of the route?
- Press ZL to ask a partner for a hint about where to go.

- Use the game’s quick-travel pipes to revisit places when helpful.
- For combat practice, speak to the Battle Master. Shine Sprites can power up partners through Merlon, and Star Pieces can be traded with Dazzle for badges with different benefits.
Nintendo describes these as general gameplay aids; they are not additional mandatory steps in the Great Tree route. See Nintendo’s beginner tips.
