The reliable fix for an “embedded.dll is missing” or “embedded.dll was not found” message is to identify the program that displays it, then repair or reinstall that program from its publisher. The filename alone does not identify an owner, prove that Windows is damaged, or justify downloading a replacement DLL. If several Windows features are also failing, run Microsoft’s DISM repair first and SFC second; those commands repair the Windows image and protected system files, not necessarily a DLL that belongs to a separate application.
Use the steps below in order. They work on Windows 11 and Windows 10, but the exact application, publisher, version and CPU architecture behind your message must be confirmed before anyone can specify a program-level replacement.

What does an “embedded.dll is missing” error actually tell you?
A DLL is a library that an application loads for shared functions. When Windows reports that embedded.dll is missing, it has detected that a program requested a file with that name and could not load it from the location or version it expected. The message does not say which program owns the file, whether the file was deleted, or whether the failure is caused by Windows itself.
There is no established, single Windows-wide component identified by this filename. Different applications can use files with the same name, and a message shown by a game launcher, utility or other desktop program must be traced to that program rather than guessed from the filename.

Start by recording the complete message, the application window or process that shows it, and what changed immediately beforehand. An installation, update, uninstall, antivirus quarantine, disk cleanup or system rollback can all change an application’s files, but the message alone cannot distinguish among those causes.
What should I check before changing files?
Identify the failing application before attempting a repair. This prevents replacing the wrong file and gives you the correct publisher and installer to use.

Record the full wording, including any path, error code or program name.
- Identify the publisher. Check the app’s shortcut properties, its entry in Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or the installer and support page you originally used. If the dialog names an executable, write that name down too.
- Ask what changed. Think back to the last update, uninstall, security scan, restore operation or storage problem before the first failure. A missing file after removing software usually points to that software’s installation rather than to a universal Windows component.
- Do not infer ownership from the filename. Search the application’s own documentation or support channel for the exact error and version. Do not download a file simply because a search result offers a matching name.
If the dialog appears before you can open the suspected application, use Task Manager’s Startup apps list and the shortcut or scheduled task that launches it to identify the publisher. Disable a nonessential startup entry temporarily only if you can restore it, and then repair the corresponding application through its official installer.
How do I repair the application that reports the error?
Repairing the identified application is the first-line route when one program displays the missing-DLL message. Use a built-in repair or modify operation when available; otherwise remove and reinstall the application with the publisher’s current official installer.
Try the application’s repair or modify option
- Close the affected program and any launcher associated with it.
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11 or Windows 10 and select the application. Some desktop programs instead expose Repair or Modify from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
- If a Repair command is offered, run it and allow the process to finish. A repair normally restores files without removing the application’s user data, but the publisher’s own notice takes precedence.
- Restart Windows and launch the program again. If the same dialog appears, record whether the wording or path changed.
For Microsoft Store applications, the Advanced options page may provide Repair and Reset. Use Repair first; Reset can remove local app data, so check the app’s backup or synchronization instructions before selecting it.

Reinstall from the official publisher
- Back up settings, profiles and save data if the application stores them locally. The location and backup method differ by program.
- Uninstall the affected application using its own uninstaller or Windows’ Installed apps page. Do not delete random DLLs or folders manually.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it, then download the installer only from the publisher’s official site, store listing or support portal. Match the required Windows version and, where stated, the application’s 32-bit or 64-bit build.
- Install with the normal options first. Avoid third-party “DLL fixer” packages and installers that bundle unrelated software.
- Open the application and test the action that produced the error. If it still fails, keep the exact application name, version, publisher and complete message for a support request.

That is community guidance, not a product-specific Microsoft Support prescription, so the publisher’s documentation remains the authority for the program you identified.
When should I run DISM and SFC?
Use Windows’ servicing tools when symptoms indicate corruption in Windows components or protected system files: multiple built-in features fail, updates cannot complete, or Windows reports broader integrity problems. They are an escalation after you identify the application, not a reason to replace an application-owned DLL solely because its filename appears in the dialog.
Microsoft’s instructions for Windows 10 and Windows 11 recommend installing pending updates and restarting before scanning. Then open Command Prompt with Run as administrator and run DISM before SFC:

sfc /scannowRun the commands separately. Wait for DISM to finish before entering the SFC command, and leave the window open until SFC verification reaches 100 percent.
Run DISM first
- Save your work and connect the PC to a reliable power source. DISM can take time, particularly when Windows must obtain repair files.
- Search for Command Prompt, right-click it and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealthand press Enter. - Wait for the operation to complete. Do not close the window because the percentage display may pause while files are checked or retrieved.
Microsoft explains that DISM uses Windows Update as its repair source by default. If the Windows Update client itself is broken, Microsoft documents using an alternate repair source; use that documented procedure and a legitimate Windows image rather than an arbitrary DLL or file-sharing download.

Run System File Checker second
- In the same elevated Command Prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait until verification reaches 100 percent. Interrupting the scan can leave the result incomplete.
- Read and save the final message. It will indicate whether no integrity violations were found, whether corrupted protected files were repaired, or whether Windows could not complete the operation.
- Restart Windows and retest the original application.

SFC’s documented scope is protected Windows system files. A clean DISM/SFC result therefore does not prove that an application’s private DLL is present or compatible; it tells you that these Windows components did not require the repairs those tools can perform.

Is embedded.dll malware?
A missing-file message does not establish malware. A malware-analysis service reported one malicious sample named embedded.dll, submitted on May 21, 2020, but that sample-specific finding does not show that every file with this name is malicious or that the file missing from your computer was malware.
Do not authenticate a download by matching only the filename. If a security product quarantined a file, review its detection details and follow the product’s restore or removal guidance. If you suspect tampering, obtain the application again from its publisher and run your normal security checks; Outbyte PC Repair, mentioned below, is not an antivirus replacement.
Should I download a standalone embedded.dll file?
No. A DLL with the right spelling can still be the wrong version, architecture, build or publisher, and an unknown download can introduce code you cannot verify. Copying a file from another computer can also create version conflicts or fail to register required dependencies.

Use a standalone replacement only when the application publisher or a suitable official procedure explicitly identifies the file, its source, its cryptographic identity and the installation method. Otherwise, repair or reinstall the complete application so all of its files and dependencies are restored together.
Why copying from another PC is risky
- The other computer may have a different application release, Windows build or CPU architecture.
- The file may belong to a different product that happens to use the same name.
- Replacing one file can hide a damaged installer, missing dependency or unwanted modification.
- Untrusted DLL sites provide no reliable chain of custody or compatibility guarantee.
What changes if I use Windows 10?
The DISM and SFC guidance above applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11. However, Microsoft says Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025; after that date, free software updates, technical assistance and security fixes are no longer provided through the normal support lifecycle. End of support does not explain why a particular application reports embedded.dll. It does mean that, when troubleshooting persists, you should also check whether the application still supports your Windows release and whether moving to a supported Windows version is part of the publisher’s requirements.
Which repair route fits the symptoms?
Choose by the scope of the suspected fault, not by the apparent seriousness of the filename.

It is reasonable to use both routes when the evidence supports both: repair Windows components, then reinstall the named application if that program still reports the file. Running DISM and SFC cannot substitute for identifying the app, and reinstalling one app cannot repair a damaged Windows image used by many programs.

Provide enough detail for the publisher to identify the intended file rather than replying with only “embedded.dll is missing.” Include:

Can I use a DLL from a friend’s computer as a temporary fix?
