Emulator developers drop a device when its operating system, CPU architecture, graphics API, or driver environment no longer fits the project’s support boundary—or when keeping old code paths creates disproportionate stability and maintenance costs. That decision concerns the host device. It does not automatically mean that a particular game has become incompatible, and a supported phone or PC is not a guarantee that every title will run correctly.
Compatibility is maintained separately through tested-game records, per-game settings and fixes, required system files, and reproducible regression reports. When an update breaks a game, the useful response is to identify whether the host requirement, emulator build, configuration, or game-specific behavior changed, then choose a maintained build, corrected setup, or a host that meets current requirements.

What is the difference between host support and game compatibility?
Host support asks whether the emulator can run reliably on the operating system and hardware. Game compatibility asks whether the emulator correctly reproduces the behavior needed by one specific title. These are separate maintenance problems.
Host support is a project boundary
A minimum requirement is a boundary, not a promise of speed or universal compatibility. Dolphin’s current README says installation fails when its stated device requirements are not met. Its documented targets, checked October 29, 2026, include 64-bit hosts, Windows 10 version 1903 or later, macOS 11 or later, Android 7.0 or later, a 64-bit Android processor, and OpenGL ES 3.0 or later. The same documentation notes that 32-bit operating systems are unsupported and that graphics-driver quality affects performance. See the Dolphin README for the project’s current wording.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Those thresholds can change as compilers, operating-system APIs, graphics drivers, and emulator back ends change. They also do not tell you whether a demanding game will reach full speed. A phone can satisfy Android 7.0, 64-bit, and OpenGL ES 3.0 requirements yet still struggle with a particular title because of its GPU driver or the game’s emulation workload.
Game compatibility is behavior maintained over time
Teams maintain game compatibility with compatibility lists, issue reports, game-specific hacks, settings, and fixes. A release can improve one title while exposing a regression in another. PCSX2 states the trade-off plainly in its FAQ: “Any change to the emulator may fix one game, but cause problems for another.” That is why a supported host and a successful game run should never be treated as the same claim.
| Emulator project | Published host boundary | What the boundary does not promise | Compatibility-maintenance detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| Dolphin standalone | 64-bit host; Windows 10 1903+, macOS 11+, or Android 7.0+; Android requires a 64-bit processor and OpenGL ES 3.0+ | A specific game’s speed, graphics correctness, or universal support | GPU drivers and per-game behavior can determine the result |
| PCSX2 | Minimum PC tier includes Windows 10 1809+, a 64-bit OS, SSE4.1, and 8 GB RAM; recommended tier includes AVX2, 16 GB RAM, and a GeForce GTX 1650 example | Guaranteed performance or compatibility for every PlayStation 2 game | Requirements are game-dependent; changes can help one game and harm another |
| Libretro Dolphin core | Uses the host and core environment rather than the standalone application’s setup | Standalone Dolphin requirements alone do not prove the core is configured correctly | The required Sys folder contains per-game settings; missing it can cause bugs |
PCSX2’s minimum and recommended figures come from its official FAQ; they are project-published thresholds, not independent benchmarks or guarantees.
Why do emulator developers drop older operating systems or devices?
The immediate reason is usually technical fit: the old host lacks an instruction set, graphics feature, driver behavior, or operating-system interface that current code assumes. A second reason is maintenance cost. Supporting an older environment can require separate code paths, extra testing, and workarounds that make the emulator less stable for everyone else.
Operating-system and architecture changes
Modern builds may require a 64-bit process, newer system libraries, or CPU instructions such as SSE4.1 or AVX2. A 32-bit operating system cannot gain those capabilities through a graphics setting. Likewise, an Android device with a 32-bit processor cannot become a supported 64-bit host after an app update.

Google has explicitly described stability and performance costs when maintaining older Windows versions of its Android Emulator. That is an example from a development tool, not evidence that every game-emulator team made the same decision. The general pattern is still useful: once an old platform blocks architectural or reliability improvements, a project may define a new minimum rather than preserve every legacy path indefinitely.

Graphics APIs and drivers
Emulators depend on graphics APIs and driver implementations for rendering, shader compilation, synchronization, and video output. Dolphin documents OpenGL ES 3.0 or later on Android, but meeting that API version does not certify the quality of a device’s driver. A driver update can correct a rendering fault without changing the emulator’s formal support boundary; conversely, a driver that exposes an API but mishandles required features can leave a game broken.
Virtual-device requirements are not host requirements
Google’s Android Emulator release notes list a 4 GB minimum phone-AVD RAM allocation for Android 17/API 37 in the June 2, 2026 entry. That is a virtual-device allocation for an Android Emulator profile, not a claim that every game emulator needs 4 GB of physical RAM. The same release notes say the Android Emulator hypervisor driver (AEHD) is scheduled to sunset on December 31, 2026; the date was still in the future on October 29, 2026. Check the Android Emulator release notes for the applicable release and host configuration.
How is compatibility maintained after an emulator update?
Maintainers combine broad regression testing with game-specific knowledge. A compatibility entry is more useful when it identifies the exact build, settings, required files, and observed symptoms rather than simply saying that a game “works.”
Tested-game records and per-game fixes
Compatibility lists show what a project or its contributors observed on particular builds and configurations. Fixes may be scoped to one title because an accurate workaround for that title would be incorrect elsewhere. PCSX2’s warning that a change can fix one game and harm another explains why global settings are not always the right solution.

System files and core-specific data
When using the Dolphin core through Libretro, the Sys folder is not optional housekeeping. The project documentation says: “This directory contains Dolphin’s database of per-game compatibility settings/hacks, without which many games experience bugs of varying severity.” That requirement is specific to the core’s setup and should not be confused with the standalone Dolphin application’s host requirements. Read the Libretro Dolphin documentation when diagnosing a core installation.
Regression reports tied to builds
A useful report identifies the last build that worked, the first build that failed, the game version, hardware, operating system, graphics backend, settings, and exact symptoms. A report that reproduces the issue lets maintainers distinguish an emulator regression from a missing BIOS file, a driver defect, or a configuration mistake.
Why did my game stop working after an update?
First determine whether the update changed host eligibility, emulator behavior, or local files. Do not assume that a new minimum requirement is the cause merely because the failure appeared after an update.
- Identify the exact program. Record the emulator name, version or build date, and whether it is a standalone application or a RetroArch/Libretro core. Core-specific files and settings can produce failures that do not occur in the standalone program.
- Check the current host requirements. Compare the operating-system version, 32-bit or 64-bit architecture, CPU instruction set, RAM, graphics API, and driver status with the project’s current documentation. For Dolphin, check the README; for PCSX2, check its FAQ.
- Separate driver symptoms from missing features. Update or reinstall a graphics driver only when the symptom points to a driver problem. Lowering resolution or disabling enhancements cannot add a missing CPU instruction set or reinstate support for an excluded operating system.
- Verify required files. For the Libretro Dolphin core, confirm that the expected
Sysfolder and its database are present. For PCSX2, verify that the BIOS was dumped from your own PlayStation 2 as the project instructs; emulator performance cannot replace a required system file. - Consult the tested-game record. Look for the title, region or release, known fixes, recommended renderer, and whether the entry applies to your build. A compatibility note for one version is not proof for every version.
- Reproduce and document the regression. If the game worked previously, write down the last working build and first broken build, then test only the settings the project recommends. Include logs or a reproducible save state when the project’s reporting process accepts them.
Dolphin describes beta builds as better tested than its fast-changing development builds. PCSX2 recommends development builds when users are trying to locate a regression. Those labels describe different purposes; neither is a promise that every game will work.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCan an older emulator version restore a broken game?
Sometimes an older build is a valuable diagnostic control: if the last known working build still runs the game on the same host, the change is evidence of a regression or altered configuration. It is not proof that the old build is safe or maintained indefinitely.

Use an archived build only with a clear record of its provenance and limitations. PCSX2’s documentation discusses older versions in the context of finding regressions, while Google’s archived Android Emulator workaround is explicitly unsupported. An old build may lack security fixes, newer operating-system support, or corrections for other games. Keep it isolated, preserve its configuration, and treat it as a troubleshooting option rather than a permanent guarantee.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should you do when current support no longer fits your device?
Choose the option that addresses the diagnosed cause, not merely the visible symptom. No path guarantees every game.
| Option | Best use | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Stay on the last working build | Confirm or temporarily work around a regression | May be unsupported, lack newer fixes, and fail on future operating-system updates |
| Correct drivers, files, or settings | Resolve a diagnosed graphics, core-data, BIOS, or per-game configuration issue | Cannot supply missing CPU features or restore an excluded host platform |
| Move to a supported host | Meet current OS, architecture, instruction-set, and graphics requirements | Still does not guarantee compatibility with every title |
| Use original console hardware | Play when emulation remains unsuitable or required system files are unavailable | Requires the console and legally obtained game media appropriate to your situation |
PCSX2 instructs users to dump BIOS from their own PlayStation 2. Libretro states that it does not distribute copyrighted BIOS files or games. Those project policies explain why buying a faster host does not solve every setup requirement, and why legal rules should be checked for the jurisdiction involved rather than stated as one universal rule.
How do you evaluate a replacement phone or PC?
Start with the emulator’s published requirements, then check the exact game and graphics-driver situation. Product names alone are not enough because two devices with similar headline specifications can differ in architecture, driver quality, or supported graphics features.
- Confirm the operating-system version and whether the build is 64-bit.
- Check the required CPU instruction set, not only clock speed or core count.
- Verify the graphics API and driver support for the emulator’s renderer.
- Look up the particular game’s compatibility record and known settings.
- Budget for required BIOS or system files and, where appropriate, a controller.
- Recheck the project documentation before purchase because minimums are versioned, not permanent specifications.
There is no defensible industry-wide percentage for how many devices emulators drop or how many games remain playable. The published figures above are named project specifications and dated release facts, not a survey of all emulator teams.

What does “supported” mean in practical terms?
“Supported” means the project is willing and able to build for, run on, or investigate the host within its documented boundary. It does not mean that every renderer, driver, game, region, controller, or enhancement will behave correctly. Compatibility is a moving relationship among the host, emulator build, game code, system files, and settings.
That distinction also explains why developers can drop a device while continuing to improve games for supported systems. Host support reduces the environments maintainers must carry; compatibility work then focuses on reproducing and fixing individual game behavior within that supported set.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does a 64-bit phone automatically run every GameCube or Wii title in Dolphin?
No. Dolphin’s 64-bit and Android/OpenGL ES requirements establish host eligibility only. The phone’s GPU driver, renderer behavior, thermal limits, and the specific game’s compatibility history still determine whether a title is usable.
Is 4 GB of RAM required for every Android emulator?
No. Google’s 4 GB figure is a minimum phone-AVD allocation for Android 17/API 37 in its Android Emulator release notes. It describes that virtual-device profile, not a universal physical-RAM rule for game emulators.
Why can a graphics-driver update fix one game but break another?
Games can exercise different shader, synchronization, and rendering paths. A driver change may correct one path while exposing a defect in another, so the useful evidence is the exact driver version, renderer, game, and reproducible symptom.
Should I report a broken game if an older build still works?
Yes. Include the last working and first broken builds, hardware, operating system, renderer, settings, and reproduction steps. That information lets maintainers bisect the change instead of treating the issue as an unsupported-host complaint.
