Enable Minecraft Java Snapshots in the Launcher: Safe Setup Guide

To enable snapshot versions, open the Minecraft Launcher, select Minecraft: Java Edition, open Installations, turn on the snapshots filter, and create or edit an installation that uses the snapshot currently listed. Launch that installation from the Java Edition Play tab.

Snapshots are experimental testing builds, not ordinary stable releases. Back up important worlds and use a separate test world or game folder before starting, because official Minecraft documentation warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds.

What are Minecraft snapshots, and which edition supports them?

Minecraft snapshots are early Java Edition builds that let players test upcoming changes before they reach a stable release. They are intended for experimentation and feedback, so their behavior, available features, and version numbers can change quickly.

This procedure applies to Minecraft: Java Edition. Snapshot articles from Minecraft describe the launcher workflow for Java Edition; they do not instruct Bedrock players to use the same control. Bedrock uses separate preview and testing terminology, so a Bedrock installation may not show a snapshot toggle at all.

What snapshots are good for

  • Trying unreleased features and balance changes.
  • Checking whether a datapack, mod, or personal project works with an upcoming version, when that project supports snapshots.
  • Playing in a disposable test world while changes are still experimental.

What snapshots are not

  • They are not guaranteed to be as reliable as the latest stable release.
  • They are not a safe default for a valuable long-running survival world.
  • They are not a Bedrock preview mode under a different name.

The main practical distinction is the intended use: a stable release is the normal choice for regular play, while a snapshot is a testing build. That difference matters most when choosing a world and an installation profile. A snapshot can be useful even if you only want to try a feature briefly, but it should not replace the installation you rely on for ordinary play.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do before enabling a snapshot?

Prepare a separate environment before launching. The most important precaution is to keep experimental data away from your main worlds.

  • Back up important worlds. Make a current copy before opening any world in a snapshot.
  • Use a new test world. This avoids exposing a valuable survival save to an experimental build.
  • Use a separate game directory when practical. A different folder keeps snapshot-generated files and saves from mixing with your normal installation.
  • Keep the stable installation unchanged. Create a named snapshot profile instead of changing the installation you normally use.
  • Expect the interface to vary. Launcher labels and controls can move or change wording after an update, but the relevant area remains the Java Edition Installations tab.

Minecraft’s published warning is explicit: “Testing versions can corrupt your world, so please backup and/or run them in a different folder from your main worlds.” Treat that warning as a requirement for valuable saves, not as a rare-edge-case disclaimer. Minecraft’s October 27, 2026 article for Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6 includes this warning.

Profile separation is not the same as world separation

A separately named installation helps you recognize which version you are launching, but a distinct profile name alone does not necessarily put its saves in a different place. For stronger separation, use a new test world and, when practical, set a separate game directory in the installation settings. If you plan to open a copy of an existing world, keep an untouched backup outside the directory used for snapshot testing.

Before you begin, check three things: you know which installation is the stable one, you have a backup of any valuable world you might open, and you can identify the snapshot profile by its name. If any of those are unclear, pause and organize the profiles or backups first.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I enable snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher?

The toggle only makes snapshot versions visible. You still need to select a snapshot in an installation and launch that profile.

  1. Open the Minecraft Launcher. Wait for the launcher home screen to load.
  2. Select Minecraft: Java Edition. Do not follow this workflow from a Bedrock-focused screen.
  3. Open the Installations tab. This is where launcher profiles and their version filters are managed.
  4. Enable the snapshots option or filter. Turn on the control that allows snapshot versions to appear in the installation list. If the wording differs in your launcher build, look for a snapshots checkbox, switch, or filter in this tab.
  5. Choose New installation, or edit a dedicated profile. A separate profile makes it clear which version is experimental and leaves your ordinary stable profile intact.
  6. Choose the snapshot version in the Version field. Select the snapshot currently offered by the launcher rather than relying on an old screenshot or an obsolete version number.
  7. Name the profile clearly. “Snapshot Testing” or a name that includes the version helps prevent accidentally launching it for normal play.
  8. Save the installation. The profile should now appear among your Java Edition installations.
  9. Open the Java Edition Play tab and launch the named profile. Confirm that the selected installation is the snapshot profile before pressing Play.

Enabling the filter does not by itself convert your stable installation. The version is used only when you select it in the installation profile you launch.

What to verify before pressing Play

Use the installation name and version together as a final check. Make sure the profile you intend to run is the one selected on the Play tab, and confirm that its version is the snapshot you chose. If you have set a separate game directory, check that the snapshot profile points to that directory rather than the one you use for stable play.

The exact labels and controls may differ as the launcher changes, so follow the function of each setting rather than looking for an exact match to an old screenshot. The key sequence remains: select Java Edition, enable snapshot visibility in Installations, choose a snapshot for a profile, and launch that profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How can I launch a snapshot without risking my main world?

Launch a clean test world first and keep an untouched backup of anything important. A separate installation name is useful, but world separation is the decisive safety step.

Create a disposable test world

  1. Launch the snapshot installation you created.
  2. Choose single-player and create a new world rather than selecting your main survival save.
  3. Use this world for feature checks, redstone experiments, commands, and other testing.

If you must inspect an existing save, make a backup copy before opening it. Keep the original copy outside the folder used by the snapshot so an accidental conversion or corruption cannot overwrite your only backup.

Use a separate game folder

When the launcher offers a game-directory setting for the installation, point the snapshot profile to a different folder from the one used by your stable profile. This separates saves and other generated files. The exact control and its location can differ between launcher releases, so verify the selected folder in the installation editor before saving.

Do not treat a successful launch as a safety guarantee

A snapshot can start normally and still alter or damage a world later. Keep testing isolated even when the first launch appears uneventful. The official warning is about the possibility of world corruption, so a normal start does not remove the need for a backup or a separate test environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A safe testing sequence

  1. Make a current backup of any important world before testing.
  2. Start with a newly created, disposable world in the snapshot profile.
  3. If you need to examine an existing world, use a copy rather than the original.
  4. Keep the original backup separate from the snapshot’s game directory.
  5. Return to the stable profile for regular play, and preserve the pre-test backup in case you need it.

This approach makes the choice reversible: you can stop testing without relying on the experimental installation to preserve your only copy of a world.

Which snapshot version should I select?

Select the snapshot that the launcher currently lists. Snapshot availability is time-sensitive: a newer build can replace an older one, and an article or video showing a previous number may no longer match your menu.

For dated context, Minecraft Java Edition 26.4 Snapshot 6 was published on October 27, 2026. That date identifies a published snapshot, not a promise that the same build will remain available in your launcher. Use the currently displayed entry when creating the installation.

Why the number may differ from a guide

  • Snapshots are published and superseded as development continues.
  • The launcher may list a later snapshot than the one described in an older article.
  • An earlier snapshot may no longer be offered as a selectable version.

Do not treat a named version in a tutorial as a permanent menu choice. The version number is useful for identifying the build discussed in that tutorial, but the launcher is the place to check what is currently available. If the build you expected is absent, select a current listed snapshot rather than changing your stable installation in an attempt to match an old guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is the difference between a stable release and a snapshot?

A stable release is intended for normal play, while a snapshot is an experimental build for testing upcoming changes. The practical differences are reliability, world-safety risk, and how long a particular version remains available.

Area Stable release Snapshot
Purpose Regular gameplay and established features Testing upcoming features and changes
Reliability Intended for normal use Experimental; behavior can change between builds
World safety Still requires ordinary backups Official documentation warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds
Availability Stable version remains the normal release choice Version entries change and may be replaced
Edition covered here Java Edition Java Edition

If your priority is preserving a long-running world, stay on the stable profile. If your priority is seeing development changes early, use a snapshot profile and an expendable world. You do not need to choose one channel for every situation: keeping a stable profile for regular play and a separate snapshot profile for testing lets you make that choice world by world.

Why can’t I see snapshots in the launcher?

Most missing-snapshot problems come from using the wrong edition, leaving the filter off, or looking at a stable profile that was never configured for snapshots.

Check that Java Edition is selected

Return to the Java Edition area of the launcher. The documented snapshot workflow is tied to Java Edition, so a Bedrock workflow will not necessarily expose the same option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Recheck the Installations filter

Open Installations and verify that the snapshots option is enabled. If the launcher uses a filter rather than a checkbox, clear any stable-only filter and select the option that includes snapshots.

Create a new profile

If your existing installation still shows only stable versions, choose New installation and inspect its version list after enabling snapshots. A dedicated profile avoids assuming that the default stable installation will change automatically.

Look for a currently available build

If a particular snapshot named in a guide is absent, it may have been superseded. Refresh the launcher and select one of the snapshot entries it currently offers instead of trying to force an old number.

Allow for launcher-interface differences

Exact labels and placement can vary as the launcher is updated. The reliable landmarks are the Java Edition selection, the Installations tab, the snapshots filter, and the version field inside an installation profile.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When troubleshooting, change one thing at a time: first confirm the edition, then confirm the filter, and finally inspect the version field in a new or dedicated installation. This makes it easier to see whether the issue is visibility or profile selection. A snapshot option being enabled does not mean that every profile has switched away from its existing version.

How do I return to the stable version?

Return to the Java Edition Play tab and select your normal stable installation before launching. Leave the snapshot profile saved if you still want to test it; keeping profiles separate is safer than repeatedly editing one installation back and forth.

Do not assume that a world opened in a snapshot is automatically safe to reopen in a stable release. Preserve the backup made before testing and use the appropriate profile for each world. If you created a separate game directory, continue selecting the stable directory for stable play.

For routine sessions, take a moment to check the selected installation before launching. A clearly named snapshot profile and a clearly identified stable profile reduce the chance of starting the wrong version. If you are unsure which profile is selected, return to the installation list and verify it rather than relying on the last profile you remember using.

How should I remove a snapshot installation?

When you no longer need a snapshot profile, open Installations, locate the named profile, and use the installer’s available edit or delete control. Removing a profile is separate from deleting its game directory, so review the folder setting first if you want to retain or remove snapshot worlds and files.

How do I decide whether snapshots are right for me?

Choose snapshots when early access to changes matters more than consistency. Choose the stable release when the world is valuable, the session needs predictable behavior, or you do not want to maintain separate test data.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Use snapshots: you are testing a feature, checking compatibility, or experimenting in a disposable world.
  • Use stable: you are playing a long-term survival world, hosting a dependable session, or protecting a save that cannot easily be replaced.
  • Use both: keep a stable installation for ordinary play and a separately named snapshot installation for experiments.

Before deciding, weigh the benefit of trying changes early against the extra care experimental builds require. If you only want predictable play, the stable release is the straightforward choice. If you want to experiment, make the test environment intentionally disposable and keep your normal installation and world separate. There is no need to expose a valuable save to a snapshot simply to make the snapshot available.

Frequently asked questions

Does turning on the snapshots filter download a snapshot immediately?

No. The filter exposes snapshot entries in the installation controls; the download and launch happen when you save and run an installation configured with a listed snapshot version.

Why does the snapshot number in a video not match mine?

Snapshot builds are replaced as development progresses. The version shown in a video may no longer be offered, so use the entry currently displayed in your launcher.

Can I keep my stable and snapshot worlds in the same folder?

You can configure installations separately, but Minecraft’s official warning recommends backing up worlds or running testing versions in a different folder. Separate directories reduce the chance that experimental files and saves are mixed with your main environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a snapshot damages a test world?

Stop using that copy and restore the backup made before testing. Do not treat the damaged save as the only copy of the world, and switch back to the stable profile for ordinary play.

Is the snapshot option available on Bedrock Edition?

This guide does not apply to Bedrock. The documented snapshot control and installation workflow are for Java Edition; Bedrock uses different preview terminology and controls.

Will enabling snapshots change the version I normally play?

No. Enabling the filter makes snapshot versions available to choose in the installation controls. You must select a snapshot for a profile and launch that profile; keep your stable profile selected when you want the normal release.

Which snapshot should I choose if an older one is missing?

Choose a snapshot currently listed by the launcher. Snapshot availability changes over time, so a version mentioned in an older guide may have been replaced or may no longer be selectable.

Is a separate profile enough to protect my worlds?

A separate profile makes the version easier to identify, but use a new test world or a separate game directory as well when practical. Back up important saves before testing because official Minecraft documentation warns that testing versions can corrupt worlds.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does turning on the snapshots filter download a snapshot immediately?

No. The filter only exposes snapshot entries in the installation controls. A snapshot is downloaded and launched when you save and run an installation configured with one of the listed versions.

Why does the snapshot number in a video not match mine?

Snapshot builds are replaced as development progresses. Use the version currently displayed in your launcher rather than trying to locate an older build shown in a video.

Can I keep stable and snapshot worlds in the same folder?

Minecraft’s official warning recommends backing up worlds or running testing versions in a different folder. Separate directories reduce the chance of mixing experimental files with your main environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What should I do if a snapshot damages a test world?

Stop using that copy and restore the backup made before testing. Use the stable profile for ordinary play until you have a safe world copy again.

Is the snapshot option available on Bedrock Edition?

This guide applies to Java Edition snapshots. Bedrock uses different preview terminology and controls, so do not look for the same Java Edition snapshot toggle.

Will enabling snapshots change my stable installation?

No. Enabling the filter makes snapshot versions visible. You still choose a version for an installation profile and launch that profile.

What should I do if the snapshot in an old guide is missing?

Select a snapshot currently offered by the launcher. Snapshot entries change over time and an older build may have been superseded.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Enable snapshots in the Minecraft Launcher’s Java Edition Installations tab, choose a currently listed snapshot in a clearly named profile, and launch it only with a test world or a backed-up copy. Keep your stable profile separate for ordinary play.
