If the Epic Games Launcher reports “Self Update Failed,” including codes such as SU-PQR1603 or SU-PQE1223, the launcher could not update itself or install a prerequisite it needs to start. There is no single documented cause or guaranteed fix. The most reliable approach is to escalate from low-risk Windows and launcher updates to permissions, the documented prerequisite-bypass switch, and finally a short antivirus or firewall test. Run each step in order, retrying the launcher after every change so you know which action affected the result.

What does the Epic Games “Self Update Failed” error mean?

The message identifies a failure in the Epic Games Launcher’s own update process or in installation of a prerequisite required by that process. Epic Games Store Support groups representative errors such as SU-PQE1223 and SU-PQR1603 under the same troubleshooting article, rather than assigning each code a separate universal cause.

In practical terms, the launcher is trying to place new files, update supporting components, or complete a prerequisite installation and cannot finish. The blockage can come from the Windows environment, an outdated launcher or runtime, insufficient read/write access to the installation directory, a shortcut setting that prevents prerequisite installation, or security software that interrupts the operation. Treat the code as a diagnostic sign, not as proof that your Epic account, game licenses, or installed games are damaged.

Which fix should you try first?

Use the following escalation order. It starts with routine, reversible maintenance and moves toward changes that require administrator access or temporarily alter security controls. Epic does not publish success rates for these remedies, so the order is a practical risk-and-effort sequence, not a guarantee.

1 Run the launcher as administrator Elevation and blocked installer actions Low; no permanent configuration change An administrator account or approval
2 Install pending Windows updates Out-of-date Windows components or servicing state Routine update; restart may be required Permission to update Windows
3 Install the latest Epic Games Launcher Corrupt or obsolete launcher files Reinstall is generally reversible, but record your install choices Administrator approval may be requested
4 Reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable Missing or damaged runtime prerequisite Reversible software maintenance Administrator approval may be requested
5 Check the install folder’s permissions Read/write denial for your Windows account Configuration change; restore the original setting if needed Folder-owner or administrator rights may be required
6 Add -SkipBuildPatchPrereq to the shortcut A prerequisite check that cannot complete normally Easy to undo by removing the switch Permission to edit the shortcut and run as administrator
7 Temporarily test antivirus or firewall interference Security software blocking launcher traffic or files Highest short-term risk; re-enable immediately after the test Permission to change security settings

How do I run Epic Games Launcher as administrator?

Elevated launch is the quickest first test because it does not reinstall anything or change the launcher’s permanent settings.

  1. Close every Epic Games Launcher window. If it remains visible in the Windows notification area, use its exit command.
  2. Locate the Epic Games Launcher shortcut in the Start menu, on the desktop, or in File Explorer.
  3. Right-click the shortcut and select Run as administrator.
  4. Approve the Windows User Account Control prompt, then allow the launcher to retry its self-update.

If the update succeeds only when elevated, your normal Windows account or the installation directory may lack the access the updater needs. Continue with the folder-permission check rather than assuming every future launch must be elevated. If the same code appears, close the elevated launcher and proceed to Windows updates.

Could Windows updates be causing the prerequisite failure?

Yes. Epic’s troubleshooting sequence specifically calls for installing available Windows updates before trying the launcher again. An incomplete or outdated Windows servicing state can prevent a prerequisite installer from registering files correctly.

  1. Open Settings from the Windows Start menu.
  2. Open Windows Update (on some Windows releases this is under Update & Security).
  3. Select Check for updates and install all offered updates, including any that require a restart.
  4. Restart Windows when prompted, even if the launcher was not open during the update.
  5. Try the Epic Games Launcher again using its ordinary shortcut.

Do not interrupt an update or repeatedly force-close Windows while it is servicing itself. If Windows reports that it is fully up to date and the self-update error remains, move to the launcher and runtime steps instead of repeatedly checking the same screen.

How do I install the latest Epic Games Launcher?

A damaged or obsolete launcher installation can fail before it has the code needed to update itself. Epic directs users to obtain the latest launcher from its website and use the Download button.

  1. Exit the currently installed launcher completely.
  2. Open Epic’s official website in a browser and choose its Download button for the launcher.
  3. Run the downloaded installer and approve any Windows permission prompt.
  4. Keep track of the installation location selected by the installer, especially if you use a non-default drive or folder.
  5. After installation finishes, start the launcher and check whether the self-update message has cleared.

A launcher reinstall is not the same as reinstalling every game, but you should avoid deleting game libraries or manually removing folders unless the installer explicitly requires it. If the installer offers a choice of location, select the existing launcher location only when you know it is the intended directory and you have the necessary rights to write there.

How do I reinstall Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable?

The Epic launcher can depend on Microsoft Visual C++ runtime files. Epic’s remedy is to reinstall the latest supported Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable package, using the Microsoft downloads linked from its support guidance.

  1. Close the Epic Games Launcher and any installer windows.
  2. Open Microsoft’s official page for the latest supported Visual C++ Redistributable downloads.
  3. Choose the package that matches your Windows architecture and follow Microsoft’s installation prompts. If you are unsure which architecture applies, check Settings > System > About > System type before downloading.
  4. If the installer offers Repair, use it for an existing installation; otherwise complete the installation or reinstall option it provides.
  5. Restart Windows if the runtime installer requests it, then launch Epic Games again.

Install the runtime from Microsoft rather than from an unverified download site. The runtime step is aimed at a missing or damaged prerequisite; it will not correct a denied install-folder permission or a firewall rule, so continue through the sequence if the code persists.

How do I check Epic Games Launcher’s read and write permissions?

The updater must be able to read its existing files and write replacements in the selected installation folder. Epic’s permission check uses the folder’s Security properties and your Windows user account.

  1. Find the folder where the Epic Games Launcher is installed. You can identify it from the shortcut’s Properties window or from the location chosen during installation.
  2. Right-click that folder and choose Properties.
  3. Open the Security tab.
  4. Select your Windows user account in the list of groups and users.
  5. In the permissions panel, confirm that Allow is selected for both Read and Write.
  6. Select Apply, then OK, and retry the launcher.

If the account is not listed, or Windows will not let you change the setting, the folder may be owned by another account or protected by administrator policy. Use an administrator account or ask the device owner to make the change; do not take ownership of system folders casually. Check the exact launcher folder, not a similarly named game library, because changing permissions on the wrong directory can create unrelated access problems.

How does the -SkipBuildPatchPrereq shortcut switch work?

Epic documents a shortcut switch that bypasses the launcher’s build-patch prerequisite check. It is a targeted workaround for a prerequisite stage that will not complete, not a general repair for every self-update error.

  1. Close the Epic Games Launcher completely.
  2. Right-click the Epic Games Launcher shortcut and select Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, click the Target field.
  4. Move the cursor to the end of the existing target, add one space, and append -SkipBuildPatchPrereq. The end of the line should look like this, with the executable path retained before the switch:
    "...EpicGamesLauncher.exe" -SkipBuildPatchPrereq
  5. Select Apply, then OK.
  6. Right-click that same shortcut and choose Run as administrator.

Keep the space between the closing quotation mark and the switch. If Windows says the target is invalid, reopen Properties and verify that you changed the shortcut’s Target field rather than renaming the executable. To return to the normal startup path, remove the space and switch, apply the change, and launch the shortcut again. Because this option skips a prerequisite check, use it only as Epic documents and do not treat a successful launch as proof that the underlying prerequisite is healthy.

How can antivirus or firewall software cause SU-PQR1603 or SU-PQE1223?

Security software can block a launcher file, prevent a network connection, or stop a prerequisite installer from writing to disk. Epic recommends a temporary disable-and-test procedure, followed by immediate re-enabling.

  1. Save your work and close the Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Temporarily disable your antivirus protection or firewall using that product’s own controls. Do this only long enough to perform one launcher start; avoid browsing or downloading unrelated files during the test.
  3. Start Epic Games Launcher and check whether the self-update or prerequisite installation completes.
  4. Re-enable the antivirus and firewall immediately, whether or not the test helped.
  5. If the launcher works only while protection is disabled, contact the security product’s developer for an appropriate exception or diagnosis rather than leaving protection off.

A negative test is useful too: if the same error appears with protection disabled, restore the settings and continue troubleshooting elsewhere. Security controls differ by product, so do not assume that a single toggle disabled every layer of protection on the computer.

What should I do if the error returns after a successful launch?

First identify which condition changed. If the launcher worked only with administrator elevation, review the install-folder permissions. If it worked only with the shortcut switch, remove the switch after confirming whether a normal launch now succeeds. If it worked only while security software was disabled, restore protection and obtain guidance from that product’s developer.

  • Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. • Record the exact code and the time it appeared; SU-PQR1603 and SU-PQE1223 belong to the same broad error family but are still useful identifiers when seeking support.
  • Note whether Windows restarted, the launcher was reinstalled, or Visual C++ was repaired between attempts.
  • Keep one change in place at a time. Reversing several changes together makes it impossible to tell which condition mattered.
  • Use the ordinary shortcut after testing the bypass switch so you know whether the normal prerequisite path has recovered.

If every documented step fails, preserve the exact message, your Windows edition and update state, the launcher installation location, and which steps you tried before contacting Epic Games Store Support. Those details are more actionable than reporting only that the launcher “will not open.”

Is there a guaranteed fix or a published success rate?

No. Epic’s support guidance presents several possible remedies and does not publish an occurrence rate, a fix percentage, or a ranking showing that one action works more often than another. The correct interpretation is an escalation path covering common categories of failure, not a promise that any particular step will resolve every computer’s error.

Because the actions have different consequences, stop when the launcher works and undo temporary workarounds that are no longer needed. In particular, do not leave antivirus or firewall protection disabled, and remove the shortcut switch if the standard launcher path functions again.

What is the safest order for a second attempt?

If the first pass did not resolve the error, repeat the sequence without skipping the diagnostic distinctions: elevate the launcher, finish Windows updates, install the current launcher, repair Visual C++, verify folder permissions, try the documented switch, and perform the short security-software test. Restart Windows after installers or updates request it, and launch from the exact shortcut whose properties you edited.

This order balances four practical factors: routine updates before configuration changes, reversible actions before reinstalls, prerequisite coverage through Windows and Visual C++, and administrator access only where it is needed. It also limits the time your security software is disabled and leaves a clear record for support if the error survives the complete sequence.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does SU-PQR1603 mean my Epic account has been banned?

No evidence in Epic’s description connects this error family to account enforcement. The codes identify a launcher self-update or prerequisite-installation failure, so troubleshoot the Windows and installation conditions first.

Can I leave -SkipBuildPatchPrereq on my shortcut permanently?

You can remove it whenever you want by editing the Target field again. It is better treated as a diagnostic workaround: once the normal launcher path works, restore the unmodified shortcut so future prerequisite checks are not silently bypassed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will reinstalling the launcher delete my installed games?

A launcher reinstall and a game-library deletion are separate operations, but the outcome depends on the installer choices and folders you select. Record your library locations and do not manually delete game directories unless an official instruction specifically requires it.

What information should I give support if none of the steps work?

Provide the exact error code, Windows edition and update status, launcher install path, whether administrator launch changed anything, and whether the Visual C++ repair or shortcut switch was tested. Also state whether temporarily disabling security software changed the result, then confirm that protection was re-enabled.
