The Entertainment Software Association’s 2025 report finds that 60% of U.S. adults play video games at least weekly. It does not establish how many adults play every day. The report’s broader estimate—205.1 million regular players—covers Americans ages 5–90 and defines regular play as at least one hour per week.
Does the ESA report show that millions of American adults play every day?
No. The 2025 ESA report measures weekly play, not daily frequency. Its finding that 60% of U.S. adults play weekly cannot be restated as a daily-play figure. The headline language in the June 3, 2025 coverage overstates what that statistic shows.
The report’s separate figure of 205.1 million regular players is also not an adult-only count: it covers people ages 5–90 who play at least one hour a week. The ESA includes play on smartphones, tablets, PCs, consoles, and VR headsets.
What the 2025 report found
| Finding | Population and measure |
|---|---|
| 205.1 million regular players | Americans ages 5–90 who play at least one hour per week |
| 60% play weekly | U.S. adults ages 18 and older |
| Average player is 36 years old and has played for 18 years | Average age and average years of play reported by the ESA |
| 49% of Boomers and 36% of the Silent Generation play weekly | Weekly play by the two older generations identified in the report |
| 82% of parents who play game with their children | Parents who play video games |
| 55% play with others weekly | Players ages 8–90 |
| 21% report having a disability | Adult players |
The findings come from the ESA’s 2025 Essential Facts report. Its adult weekly-play rate and all-ages regular-player estimate use different populations and should not be treated as interchangeable.

How the survey was conducted
The ESA and YouGov conducted the online U.S. survey from February 11–25, 2025, with 5,000 respondents recruited from YouGov’s proprietary panel. The data were weighted to represent the U.S. population by age, gender, ethnicity, education, census region, and the distribution of gamers and non-gamers. The report’s definition of a gamer includes at least one hour of weekly play on a smartphone, tablet, PC, console, or VR headset. See the ESA report and methodology.
What the findings say about gaming’s appeal—and what they do not
The 2025 report says U.S. adults believe games bring joy (84%), provide mental stimulation and stress relief (81%), and bring people together (76%). These percentages describe respondents’ beliefs; they are not evidence that gaming causes those outcomes. ESA President and CEO Stanley Pierre-Louis described games as “a powerful cultural force due to their widespread appeal across every demographic as a fun and beneficial way to spend time” in the June 3, 2025 release.

A separate Gallup survey offers a more qualified picture of wellbeing. In a survey of more than 5,000 U.S. adults conducted May 27–June 4, 2025, daily players were less likely to meet Gallup’s self-reported “thriving” measure than adults who very rarely or never played (45% versus 55%). Gallup also reported that 51% of players who played in person with friends or family were thriving, compared with 47% of those playing online with loved ones, 47% playing alone, and 43% playing online with strangers. These are associations, not proof that gaming frequency or setting caused differences in wellbeing. See Gallup’s findings.

The ESA’s 2026 report release gives a newer estimate of 212.3 million Americans playing weekly, up 3% from the prior year’s figure, and says mobile is the most popular platform across age groups. That is a separately dated weekly-play measure, not a revision of the 2025 report’s 205.1 million estimate under a daily-play definition. The 2026 ESA release provides the newer context.
