If an esports company has filed bankruptcy, pursue a refund on two tracks immediately: ask the seller for money back, and protect the payment dispute or bankruptcy-claim deadline that applies to your transaction. Save the receipt, statement, promised event or delivery date, cancellation notice, and every reply. Credit-card buyers may have a federal billing-error route if they send written notice to the issuer’s billing-disputes address within the applicable 60-day period; debit-card protections are different. If the debtor itself took your money, inspect the court’s claims notice and file, or confirm a scheduled claim, as the case requires. A bankruptcy filing does not automatically create a refund, and the correct route depends on whether you bought physical merchandise, event admission, or a continuing digital service.
What should I do first after the bankruptcy announcement?
Work through each purchase separately and act before any payment-dispute or court deadline expires. The name on your receipt and card statement may be an event organizer, ticket intermediary, merchandise seller, subscription provider, or another entity; do not assume that one company automatically owes every buyer.

- Make a transaction record. For every ticket, preorder, merchandise order, and subscription, record the seller’s legal or billing name, amount, purchase date, promised fulfillment or event date, payment method, and whether anything was delivered, canceled, replaced, or refunded.
- Preserve proof. Keep the receipt, order page, statement, terms in force when you bought, cancellation or postponement notice, delivery tracking, screenshots, and correspondence. Save originals and submit copies when an issuer or court requests documents.
- Request merchant relief. Ask the party that accepted payment for a refund for the particular product or service that was not provided. State the order or ticket number, amount, promised date, and the remedy you want; retain the response or proof that no response arrived.
- Contact the payment provider promptly. A credit-card buyer should call the issuer and send the required written notice without waiting for a slow merchant response. A debit-card buyer should ask the bank what non-delivery process and deadline it applies. For an automatic bank debit, revoke authorization with both the company and the bank.
- Check the bankruptcy case. Find the debtor’s exact legal name, court, case number, claims agent or clerk instructions, and any bar date. A case notice—not a general internet deadline—controls.
These tracks can run at the same time. A merchant request does not extend an issuer’s deadline, and a bankruptcy filing does not replace a card dispute.
Which payment method did I use?
The payment rail determines the strongest procedural protection. Do not apply the credit-card rule automatically to a debit card or an account withdrawal.

Credit card
For a billing error involving goods or services not delivered as agreed, send a written notice to the issuer’s billing-disputes address, not the payment address, within 60 days after the first statement showing the error was sent. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) advises sending copies of supporting records and using certified mail with a return receipt so you can document delivery. Call the issuer immediately as well, but a telephone call alone is not a substitute for the written notice.
A promised future event or delayed shipment can make the 60-day calculation difficult. Tell the issuer the expected date, the actual cancellation or non-delivery date, and why the charge is disputed. The issuer may consider a late request under its own policy, but federal protection after the statutory window is not assured.

Debit-card non-delivery disputes follow different federal rules and often depend on the bank’s voluntary procedures. Contact the bank as soon as you know the ticket, merchandise, or service will not be provided and ask for its written deadline and evidence requirements. Do not describe a debit purchase as if it were a credit-card billing error.
Automatic withdrawal from a bank account
For a recurring ACH or other automatic debit, tell the subscription company that authorization is revoked and notify the bank. Follow up in writing and monitor later statements. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) emphasizes that cancelling an automatic payment does not cancel the underlying service contract; you may still need to cancel the subscription itself or resolve an amount that was already owed.
What did I actually buy?
The legal path changes with the promised performance. Separate physical merchandise from event admission and digital services before choosing a remedy.
Physical merchandise ordered online, by mail, or by phone
The FTC’s merchandise rule covers qualifying shipped merchandise, not every consumer transaction. The seller must ship by the stated time, or generally within 30 days when no shipping time was stated. If the seller cannot meet the deadline, it must give you the choice to agree to a delay or cancel for a prompt full refund. For covered merchandise, the FTC states: “If the seller doesn’t ship your order, it has to give you a full refund — not just a gift card or store credit.”

The rule addresses merchandise, not services. Use it for an undelivered jersey, controller, collectible, or other physical item only when the transaction fits the rule’s coverage. A store-credit offer does not replace the required refund for covered unshipped merchandise, but the rule does not guarantee the same result for an event ticket or digital subscription.
Esports tickets and event admission
A canceled, postponed, or inaccessible tournament ticket is generally a service or admission transaction rather than shipped merchandise. Read the ticket terms, cancellation notice, and any event-specific refund policy, then ask the named seller for the promised remedy. The FTC merchandise rule should not be cited as a universal ticket-refund guarantee.
Identify who took the payment and who promised admission. An organizer, ticketing intermediary, venue, team, or successor may have different contractual roles. The available documents and the bankruptcy case determine which entity, if any, is your claim target.
Digital subscriptions and other continuing services
A subscription that stopped working or continued charging after cancellation requires two actions: cancel the service under its stated procedure and challenge any later payment. Save the cancellation confirmation, date, account identifier, and statements showing post-cancellation charges. The merchandise rule’s shipping remedy does not cover a digital service.

How do I dispute an undelivered credit-card purchase?
Use the issuer’s process while preserving evidence of what was promised and what failed. The written notice goes to the address printed for billing disputes, which may differ from the address used for payments.
- List the transaction precisely. Include the merchant name as it appears on the statement, account number or claim identifier requested by the issuer, transaction date, amount, and the product or service that was not supplied.
- Explain the timeline. State the promised delivery or event date, the cancellation, closure, or non-delivery date, and any replacement or refund offer. For a delayed shipment, show both the expected and actual dates.
- Attach copies. Include the receipt, relevant terms, cancellation notice, tracking or access records, and your merchant-refund request. Do not mail irreplaceable originals.
- Send it with proof of receipt. The FTC recommends certified mail with a return receipt. Keep the mailing receipt, delivery record, and a complete copy of the packet.
- Follow the issuer’s follow-up instructions. Respond by its stated date, keep notes of calls, and continue checking statements for a provisional or final credit and any reversal.
Do not let a merchant promise to “look into it” consume the applicable notice period. If the federal window has passed, still ask the issuer whether its policy permits a delayed-delivery dispute, but describe the timing accurately rather than asserting a guaranteed right.

How do I stop a subscription from charging again?
Stopping future debits and cancelling the service are related but separate tasks.
- Use the provider’s cancellation path. Follow the account, email, or written-notice procedure in the subscription terms. Capture a dated confirmation or screenshot showing the cancellation took effect.
- Revoke payment authorization. For an automatic bank-account debit, tell the company and the bank that authorization is revoked, then send written confirmation as the CFPB recommends.
- Watch subsequent statements. Mark the first statement after cancellation and every later statement. Challenge charges posted after the effective cancellation date through the bank or card issuer’s process.
- Preserve the contract issue separately. Revoking a debit prevents or challenges a payment; it does not by itself decide whether an earlier service balance was valid.
How do I file a claim in the bankruptcy case?
Use the court’s case-specific notice and the current claim form. Bankruptcy deadlines vary by chapter and court, and a filing does not promise a full or quick payment.

Find the correct case and deadline
Confirm the debtor’s exact legal name and case number from a court notice or docket. Chapter 7 asset cases state a claims bar date; a no-asset Chapter 7 case can announce one later. Chapter 11 creditors receive a deadline set in that case’s notice or order. Do not rely on a date from another case or on the petition date alone.
Check whether a Chapter 11 scheduled claim needs a form
In Chapter 11, an accurately scheduled claim that is not marked disputed, contingent, or unliquidated may not require a separate proof of claim under the case rules. If the amount or status is wrong, the claim is omitted, or the notice requires filing, submit a proof of claim by the stated deadline. Verify the schedules and the claims notice before deciding that no filing is needed.
Complete Official Form 410
The current United States Courts form is Official Form 410 (April 2025); do not use the superseded Form 10. The form asks for the claim amount as of the bankruptcy petition date, the basis for the claim, and supporting information. Attach redacted records: remove full payment-card numbers, bank-account numbers, and other unnecessary personal identifiers.
Describe the unpaid loss clearly—for example, an admission fee for a canceled event, the price of an undelivered physical item, or prepaid subscription time that was not supplied. If the seller or trustee later provides a refund, amend or update the claim as the court’s procedures require.

Understand the bankruptcy stay
Bankruptcy generally stays collection against the debtor. Do not treat a lawsuit against the debtor as the routine next step; follow the claims process and seek case-specific legal advice if a stay or a disputed liability creates a problem.
What evidence should I assemble?
Organize one folder per transaction, with files named by date and seller. A useful packet contains:
- Receipt, invoice, ticket confirmation, or subscription sign-up record.
- Card or bank statement showing the charge, with unrelated transactions concealed.
- Terms, refund policy, delivery promise, and event schedule in force when you paid.
- Cancellation, postponement, shutdown, or non-delivery notice.
- Delivery tracking, access logs, or screenshots showing the promised item or service was not provided.
- Your dated refund request and the seller’s answer, refusal, silence, or credit.
- Issuer or bank dispute correspondence, certified-mail receipt, and delivery confirmation.
- Bankruptcy notice, debtor name and case number, claims deadline, and any filed claim number.
Keep the original files and a chronology. Redact sensitive account numbers before submitting documents, while leaving enough information for the issuer or claims administrator to match the transaction.
Can an esports buyer claim priority or receive a guaranteed amount?
Usually, you should not check a priority box without applying the case-specific rules. Official Form 410 includes a conditional priority category for qualifying deposits toward property or services bought for personal, family, or household use, with a listed amount of up to $3,800 on the April 2025 form and future adjustment dates noted there. The form does not establish that every ticket payment, merchandise preorder, or subscription fee qualifies.
Describe the transaction accurately and leave priority unclaimed unless the facts and applicable bankruptcy law support it. A priority designation is not a promise that funds exist, and ordinary unsecured claims can receive little or nothing depending on the debtor’s assets and the court-approved distribution.

| Route | Best fit | Immediate action | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Merchant refund request | Any undelivered ticket, physical item, or service | Ask the payment recipient for a transaction-specific refund and retain the response | The seller may be insolvent, may deny liability, or may refer you to the bankruptcy process |
| Credit-card billing dispute | Non-delivery or other billing error paid by credit card | Call the issuer and send written notice to its billing-disputes address within the applicable federal period | Delayed events can complicate the notice date; late federal protection is not assured |
| Debit-card dispute | Non-delivery paid from a debit account | Contact the bank promptly and ask for its non-delivery policy and deadline | Do not assume credit-card billing-error rights apply |
| Automatic-debit cancellation | Recurring subscription withdrawals from a bank account | Cancel the service, revoke authorization with the company and bank, and monitor statements | Stopping a debit does not cancel an underlying contract or decide an earlier balance |
| Bankruptcy proof of claim | Unpaid loss owed by the bankruptcy debtor | Follow the case notice, check schedules, and file current Official Form 410 when required | Bar dates vary, and distribution may take months or years or be less than the claim |
What outcome and timing should I expect?
A successful issuer dispute can produce a credit under the issuer’s process; a merchant can voluntarily refund; a bankruptcy claim is an allowance and distribution process rather than an instant chargeback. The bankruptcy court’s consumer guidance warns that liquidation payments can take months or years. No reliable esports-wide refund percentage, average payout, or industry loss figure has been established by the federal sources summarized here.
Keep pursuing the route that remains open, but record every payment. If an issuer, seller, trustee, or claims administrator pays part or all of the loss, account for that amount in the bankruptcy claim. Official Form 410 requires credit for payments received, so do not seek the same loss twice.

What mistakes can delay recovery?
- Waiting for the bankruptcy case before contacting the issuer: preserve the card or bank deadline first.
- Sending a dispute to the payment address: use the issuer’s billing-disputes address.
- Using the merchandise rule for a ticket or subscription: establish whether the transaction is covered merchandise before relying on that rule.
- Assuming the intermediary is the debtor: match the receipt, statement, contract, and court case to the entity that took payment or promised performance.
- Filing on a guessed date: read the actual claims notice for the chapter and case.
- Using an obsolete form: submit current Official Form 410, not Form 10.
- Claiming priority automatically: the consumer-deposit category is conditional and does not cover every esports purchase.
- Stopping a debit without cancelling the subscription: complete both actions and keep proof.
- Claiming the full loss after a partial refund: reduce or update the claim to reflect money already received.
When should I obtain individual legal advice?
Consider advice from a qualified bankruptcy or consumer-law professional when the amount is substantial, the seller and debtor are different entities, the claim is disputed, a priority classification matters, a claims deadline has passed, or an issuer denies a timely dispute. Bring the transaction folder, case notice, and a chronology. General federal guidance cannot determine a particular event’s refund term, successor liability, state-law remedy, or the status of a live docket.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I file a bankruptcy claim before the event’s original date has passed?
You can ask the claims administrator or court about a contingent or unliquidated claim, but the correct treatment depends on the case order and the claim’s status. State the facts as of the petition date and follow any instructions for estimating or amending the amount rather than inventing a final loss.
What if the ticket seller says the bankrupt organizer—not the seller—owes me?
Compare the receipt, card-statement descriptor, ticket terms, and bankruptcy schedules to identify each party’s role. You may need to preserve a payment dispute against the seller while separately filing against the debtor if the documents support both routes; do not assume one claim automatically replaces the other.
Can I submit a full, unredacted card statement with Form 410?
Submit copies with unnecessary personal and account numbers redacted, leaving the transaction date, amount, and merchant-identifying information visible. Keep the unredacted original securely in case the court, trustee, or issuer later requests verification.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesDoes a refund from my card issuer end my bankruptcy claim?
It should change the amount you seek for the same loss. Record the issuer credit and follow the case’s procedure to amend or otherwise account for the payment, because Form 410 requires credit for recoveries already received.
