eSports: How Much Money Do Professional Gamers Make, Really?

Prize records capture only one part of what esports players earn. Here is what salaries, streaming, sponsorships, and image rights contribute, and what the main public studies do and do not measure.

No reliable single figure exists for what professional esports players earn. Tournament prize records capture only one part of a player’s income. Team salaries, streaming revenue, sponsorships, and image-rights payments are usually private, and they vary widely by game, region, and contract. What public sources can do is show which income streams exist, how concentrated prize money is at the top, and exactly what the few available surveys measured.

Why there is no single pro gamer salary figure

A player’s income depends on the game, the region, the competitive tier, the contract, tournament results, audience size, and how many income streams the player has. A figure for a top player on a major title says little about a player on a regional roster. Three different numbers are often confused with pay:

  • Prize pool: the total awarded at an event, which is split by placement and then divided according to team arrangements. A pool is not a player’s pay.
  • Recorded prize earnings: the winnings logged against a player’s name in tournament databases. These leave out salaries and private commercial income.
  • Team revenue: an organization’s income, often drawn from sponsors and prize money. It is not a player salary.

Where player income comes from

Several routes can contribute to a player’s income. None is guaranteed, and the proportions differ from player to player.

Team salary and contract compensation

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) describes the basic structure of elite player pay in its section on stakeholder business models:

“Elite players are primarily paid by the team organization for which they compete, also in exchange for licensing their publicity or image rights.”

Contracts can structure this as a salary, a fee, or a share of sponsorship, merchandising, partnership, or other contract income. The terms differ between organizations and are generally not public, so a reported team salary usually comes from the player or a secondary source rather than from a published contract.

Prize money

Tournament awards are allocated by placement. How a team divides them among its roster is a matter of internal agreement. A prize record shows what was awarded, but it does not establish the player’s share, the taxes withheld, or the net amount the player kept.

Streaming and content creation

Players can earn from advertising, subscriptions, donations, and other audience-linked monetization on platforms such as Twitch and YouTube. Operating a channel does not by itself indicate any particular income level. Most of this revenue is private, so no public source gives a typical figure.

Sponsorship and image rights

Established players may negotiate personal sponsorships. Players may also grant an organization limited rights to use their image or publicity, and the organization then pays for those rights. A team’s sponsorship deal is not automatically the player’s own income.

Other sources reported in South Korea

In a 2024 survey of South Korean professional gamers, respondents also cited broadcast appearances, down payments, ad revenue, in-game item revenue, merchandise, and bonuses. Respondents could name more than one source, so these categories overlap and cannot be added together as shares of income.

What prize pools and prize records show

The most detailed public academic work on player earnings is Tim R. L. Fry and Thomas Newham’s study in the Journal of Cultural Economics (2026). It covers 846 elite players from 62 countries across a 1999–2024 player-year panel, using publicly available tournament records. The authors are explicit about its limits:

“Our earnings estimates also reflect recorded prize earnings and omit salaries, streaming and sponsorship income, so they capture only one component of professional income and likely understate true inequality.”

The same study points to how sharply prize money is tiered. The table below shows two historical examples cited in it. They describe how one event’s pool was distributed, not what any individual player was paid.

Event Prize pool Allocation reported What it measures
The International 2021 $40 million $18.2 million to the winning team; $5.2 million to the runner-up Team placement allocations for one tournament; not individual net earnings
BLAST Paris Major 2023 $1.25 million 40% to the winners; about 14% to the runners-up Pool structure for one event; not a salary estimate

Neither example is a current annual pay benchmark. Their value is in showing that a small share of placements receives most of a pool.

What the South Korean survey shows

The Korea Creative Content Agency (KOCCA) published its 2024 Professional Gamer Workforce and Career Structure in Korea report in 2025. Fieldwork ran from June to August 2024 and covered 138 professional gamers in South Korea. Respondents were asked which income sources applied to them:

Income source Share of respondents citing it
Salary 80.4%
Competition prize money 50%
Streaming income 18.8%
Bonuses 13%

These figures show how many respondents named each source. They are not shares of income and they are not dollar amounts. A respondent who earns from salary and streaming counts in both rows.

Team and program figures that can be mistaken for salaries

Deloitte’s organization revenue data

Deloitte Insights’ Investing in esports draws on a survey of 53 company representatives from 15 countries. The respondents were industry stakeholders, not players. The report estimates that on average 65% of team revenue comes from core esports activities, including sponsorship sales (37%) and prize money (15%). This describes organizational revenue. It says nothing about what any player is paid.

ESL Pro Tour club and player allocations

In February 2025, ESL announced in its Opting in for Revenue and Profit Share notice that its Counter-Strike 2 program would allocate more than $11 million annually to clubs and players in 2025 and 2026. The 2025 event schedule separates prize money from club rewards and annual club incentives. This is a program-level budget, and the total cannot be divided among individual players to produce a personal income figure.

What tournament-earnings rankings do not tell you

A 2025 review article in the International Journal of Esports examined earnings, social media, gender, technology, and investment. One result is that 499 of the 500 top tournament-earning players in the list studied were male. That describes the list itself. It does not describe all professional players, their total compensation, or the reasons behind the pattern.

How to read an income claim

Before accepting any figure for “what pro gamers make,” check these six points. If the source does not state them, treat the number as incomplete.

  • What is counted: salary, prize earnings, gross compensation, team revenue, or net income after tax and team deductions.
  • Who is counted: elite tournament winners, all contracted players, players in one league, or a survey sample.
  • Game and format: team or individual competition, and the tournament calendar in that title.
  • Geography and date: the country or region, the year of fieldwork, and the currency or conversion date.
  • Distribution: median or mean, the range, or only the top earner.
  • Contract treatment: team splits, bonuses, sponsor clauses, image-rights payments, and taxes, where documented.

What the available sources do not establish

  • No global average or typical salary. The sources reviewed here do not provide comparable total-compensation or salary data across games, tiers, and regions.
  • Geographically narrow survey evidence. The KOCCA figures cover 138 professional gamers in South Korea in mid-2024. They cannot be extended to other countries.
  • Nationality, not residence. The Fry and Newham study classifies players by nationality, which the authors identify as a limitation for regional analysis.
  • No per-stream amounts. No public source reviewed here gives the dollar value of streaming, sponsorship, or image-rights income for a named player.

The practical conclusion is that the most accurate statement available is structural: pro players can earn from several streams, prize money is steeply concentrated at the top of each event, and the amounts that matter most to a player’s total income are the ones that are rarely published.
