What do you need to host an ETS2 server?
The practical requirements fall into four categories: the correct dedicated-server software, enough hardware for your expected group, network access for players, and game-generated package files and configuration. The server tool is separate from the regular game client. It supports Convoy multiplayer, which SCS announced in December 2022.

- Server data: export the game’s server packages and place them in the server home directory before launching the dedicated server.
These are not all equally certain. The app ID is consistent across SCS-related documentation and installation examples. Hardware figures are conflicting third-party estimates, and the port and token details come from community guidance rather than a verified official hardware specification. Plan conservatively and confirm that your chosen setup works for your group.
What hardware should you plan for?
SCS has not published official hardware requirements for the dedicated server. That means there is no verified official minimum here for CPU, memory, storage, or a supported player count. Published figures come from community references and hosting vendors, whose sizing recommendations are not interchangeable: some describe a bare minimum, while vendor tiers are sales-oriented allocations.

The estimates point to a sensible starting range, not a guarantee. For a small private server, 2 GB RAM and roughly 5 GB storage are commonly cited starting points. If you intend to install mods, reserve at least 10 GB of storage as suggested by the Truck Simulator Wiki. For larger groups, the vendor estimates rise toward 2.5 cores and 4 GB RAM at the 32–128-player tier, but those figures should not be mistaken for independent performance testing or an SCS specification.
Choose capacity by your actual use
- Small group: use the dual-core, 2 GB RAM and 5 GB storage estimate as a cautious initial planning baseline, not as proof the server will run smoothly in every situation.
- Mods: allocate more storage than the base 5 GB estimate; the community wiki suggests 10 GB or more when mods are involved. No corresponding RAM increase for any particular mod set is specified.
- More players: expect vendors to recommend more CPU and memory as player counts grow, but do not assume that buying the largest listed tier guarantees a particular performance result.
CPU figures such as “1.5 cores” are hosting-plan allocations, not a precise description of how many physical CPU cores the server must have. Likewise, the claim that Convoy can support up to 128 players describes a stated mode capacity; it does not prove that a particular machine, network connection, or mod configuration can serve that many players reliably.

Use 1948160 for Euro Truck Simulator 2 Dedicated Server. Do not use 227300, which is the game client’s app ID. A Pterodactyl egg lists the client ID separately from the server’s default and warns that using the wrong ID can cause startup to fail. American Truck Simulator has a different dedicated-server ID, 2239530.

SCS Software’s modding wiki lists 1948160 for the ETS2 dedicated server, and an SCS blog post from December 2022 gives the same ID. The blog notes that the Dedicated Server tool appears in Steam for owners of the game; SteamCMD is the installation route described for users who do not have access to that Steam tool listing.
How do you install the dedicated server with SteamCMD?
SteamCMD installs the server files into a chosen directory. Community installation examples use anonymous login and the dedicated-server app ID. Replace <path> with the directory where you want the files installed.
- Choose a server directory. Decide where the server files will live and use that location as the install directory in the command.
- Run the install command:
steamcmd +force_install_dir <path> +login anonymous +app_update 1948160 +quit - Check the app ID before proceeding. The command must use
1948160. If it instead uses227300, it is targeting the ETS2 game client rather than the dedicated server. - Prepare the game’s server packages. In the game, enable the in-game console and run
export_server_packages. - Copy the exported package files into the server home directory—the directory used by the dedicated server.
- Start the server. The first start generates
server_config.sii, the server configuration file.
Community installation guidance establishes this overall sequence but does not specify the exact console-enabling menu path, package filenames, or configuration options. Those details can vary with the game version and installation layout, so avoid copying a configuration from an unrelated release without checking that it matches your setup.

What needs to be open on the network?
Guides report that both TCP and UDP traffic on ports 27015–27016 should be allowed. No official SCS network specification for this exact port range is published, so regard it as reported guidance rather than a definitive SCS network specification.
For a self-hosted machine, opening ports involves more than changing one setting: traffic may need to be permitted by the operating system’s firewall and by the network equipment between the server and the internet. If the server is hosted by a provider, its control panel may expose a separate firewall or port-allocation setting. The essential check is that the intended TCP and UDP traffic can reach the server on the reported range; a rule for only one protocol does not cover both.
If players cannot connect, check the server’s configured ports against the firewall and any hosting-panel allocation, then verify that both protocols are allowed. A server process running on the machine does not by itself establish that outside players can reach it.

Do you need a GSLT to make the server public?
Community guidance says a Steam Game Server Login Token is required for public server-browser visibility, with a unique token for each server. If your aim is a server that people can find in the public browser, plan to provide a token rather than assuming that installing the files automatically publishes the server.

The server fails to start
First confirm that SteamCMD installed app 1948160, not client app 227300. Then check that the exported package files were copied into the server home directory. The server’s first launch is expected to generate server_config.sii; if the file has not appeared, confirm that the server has actually completed a startup attempt in the intended directory.

Players cannot reach the server
Check the reported port range, 27015–27016, and ensure both TCP and UDP are permitted wherever the traffic is filtered. A local server launch and external reachability are separate checks.
The server does not appear in the public browser
Check whether a GSLT has been supplied and whether it is unique to that server, as community guidance recommends for browser visibility. The token is not a substitute for correct installation or network access.

The machine seems undersized
Published capacity figures are planning estimates, not guarantees. Revisit the player-count assumptions and resource allocation rather than treating a hosting tier’s advertised range as a verified performance promise. For modded installations, account for the community suggestion of 10 GB or more of storage.
Which requirements are official, and which are estimates?
The most dependable detail for planning the installation is the dedicated-server app ID: SCS-related material and community installation examples agree on 1948160. SCS’s December 2022 announcement also establishes that dedicated server support was added for Convoy. Its December 2022 announcement does not provide an official CPU, RAM, disk, port, or player-count specification.
The hardware numbers above come from an undated community wiki and undated hosting-vendor material. Their differences matter: a general dual-core/2 GB estimate is not the same thing as a vendor’s tier for a stated player range, and none of these figures was verified as a benchmark. The reported port range and GSLT requirement likewise come from community guidance; the Steam community guide cited for setup is about 1,400 days old, so steps tied to it may not match a newer game release.
For that reason, use the figures as a starting point for choosing a machine and use the app ID as the fixed check in the install command. Reassess the machine if your group, mods, or actual server behavior differ from the assumptions behind a third-party tier.
