Servers4Gamers lists a three-day free trial and a paid starting price of $9.37 per month. Three days is enough for a basic load and administration check, but not necessarily for observing a full wipe cycle or long-term backup behavior. Ask how saves are retained when the trial ends.
Other trial claims in roundup articles

The cheapest advertised monthly price is not automatically the cheapest usable server. A low tier that cannot hold your chosen map, plugins, or player count can cost more in migrations and downtime than a slightly higher tier with adequate headroom. Ask for the exact RAM allocation, CPU limits, storage type, backup schedule, geographic location, cancellation policy, and whether DDoS mitigation is included; those points were not verified for these listings.

Hardware and storage requirements
Facepunch’s Rust wiki lists 12 GB of free RAM and 15 GB of free disk space for a dedicated server, with more memory needed for a 6k map. It strongly prefers an SSD or NVMe drive. Facepunch also cautions that these values are not fixed and depend heavily on the use case and server population. Older community guides sometimes quote 4 GB of RAM, a 2.9 GHz quad-core processor, and 8 GB of disk; those figures are outdated for planning against the current wiki guidance.
- Reserve at least 12 GB of genuinely available memory for the server and operating system; leave extra headroom for larger maps, plugins, and players.
- Provide at least 15 GB of free space on SSD or NVMe storage, plus additional room for updates, logs, backups, and multiple world saves.
- Use a stable, low-latency internet connection with upload capacity appropriate to your expected population.
Install the dedicated server with SteamCMD
The dedicated server uses Steam App ID 258550. A Steam account is not needed to install or run it. Anonymous installation must include the +login argument; omitting it causes SteamCMD to fail with ERROR! Failed to install app '258550' (No subscription.).

Networking and ongoing administration
Self-hosting means you are responsible for port forwarding on the router, firewall rules, a stable local address, server updates, scheduled restarts, save backups, log review, permissions, and protection of the machine’s public IP address. A server that works on the same computer may still be unreachable from outside until the correct ports are forwarded and allowed through the operating-system firewall. Test from a different network, not only from the host’s own LAN.
Back up saves before updates and before changing plugins. Keep at least one copy off the server so a disk failure or corrupted update does not erase the only world. Plan how you will roll back a bad plugin, restore a save, and communicate downtime to players.
Players still need Rust on Steam
Free server software does not provide free game licenses. As Facepunch’s wiki puts it: “You do NOT need a Steam account to install and run a Rust server, but you will need a steam account with Rust to join and play.” Every player therefore needs their own Steam account that owns Rust.
Operating-system uncertainty
macOS support is not settled by the available references: the Rust wiki lists macOS as supported, while a Steamworks wiki excerpt says macOS does not appear to run dedicated servers. Treat macOS hosting as unconfirmed and verify current compatibility before building your setup around it. A supported Linux or Windows environment is the safer assumption unless you have tested the exact current server build.

- Your group is small and can tolerate scheduled downtime or credit renewal.
- You are testing whether Rust administration suits you.
- You have confirmed world persistence and can export regular backups.
Choose a trial when

- Record the RAM, CPU, storage, map-size, slot, and uptime limits in writing.
- Check whether a card is required and whether the account will renew automatically.
- Verify where the server is located and test latency from each major player group.
- Create a test world, restart it, update it, and confirm that the save survives.
- Make and download a backup before adding plugins or changing wipe settings.
- Read cancellation, refund, data-retention, and export terms.
- For self-hosting, test port forwarding and firewall rules from an external network.
- Confirm that every player owns Rust on Steam.
For 2026, the realistic answer is that “free” is best treated as a test or a small, compromise-tolerant server. A persistent public community normally needs either a paid managed plan or a self-hosted machine whose hardware, connection, and maintenance you can reliably provide.
