There are 19 named areas in Hollow Knight, but no official best-to-worst ranking. This one weighs atmosphere and visual identity, exploration, gameplay payoff, and story significance—not difficulty, for which the available sources establish no reliable scale. The order is an editorial judgment, and it includes four special areas that do not appear on the game’s displayed world map.
How this ranking works
Hallownest is a ruined kingdom spread across caves and tunnels. Its areas vary from a surface town and a rain-soaked capital to a dark tunnel system, a dream temple, and a hidden palace. The list below ranks all 19 places named in the Hollow Knight Wiki’s area inventory, including off-map locations; it does not treat map visibility as the definition of an area. The inventory notes that The Abyss, Colosseum of Fools, White Palace, and Godhome are absent from the displayed map. See the named-area inventory and map note.

Placements reflect how memorable each area’s identity and setting feel, how well it rewards exploration, and how much it contributes to the game’s world. They are not an official ranking, a difficulty tier list, or a claim about player consensus. The sources do not establish a verified area-by-area difficulty scale, popularity measure, or completion-time comparison.

City of Tears
The fallen capital is Hallownest’s most striking meeting of architecture, mood, and story. Rain seeps through cracks above the city, giving its grand structures a sense of slow decay. Its position as the kingdom’s former center makes it a natural point of comparison for the smaller, more isolated places around it. The Hallownest geography reference describes the city and its rain.

-
Greenpath
Greenpath gives the underground kingdom a lush, mossy counterpoint to its stone and machinery. Its distinct verdant identity makes it one of the clearest examples of how a region can feel like its own ecosystem rather than another stretch of cave. The developers also described how an early fungus concept developed into Greenpath. Read the developer interview hosted on Steam.
-
Deepnest
Deepnest’s dark, cramped tunnels make the environment itself feel threatening. The geography reference identifies it as a network of tight passages, and the developers describe how ideas about predators, darkness, and spiders came together in its design. It earns a high place for a strong, cohesive identity, even if its oppressive atmosphere will not be every player’s idea of a favorite. Hallownest geography.
-
Crystal Peak
A crystal-bearing mountain with a history of mining for energy, Crystal Peak has an immediately legible premise and visual identity. The mining history gives the crystals a place in Hallownest’s past, rather than making them decoration alone. It stands out as a region shaped by both natural formations and the kingdom’s attempt to exploit them. Hallownest geography.

Ancient Basin
The Ancient Basin’s depth and remoteness make it feel like a descent into Hallownest’s buried history. The White Palace is associated with this deep region, tying the Basin to one of the kingdom’s most important hidden locations. Its restrained, forgotten setting gives it a different appeal from the more densely identifiable city and forest areas. Hallownest geography.

-
Kingdom’s Edge
At Hallownest’s eastern border, Kingdom’s Edge is defined by a vast chasm and falling white ash. Its sense of distance from the capital gives it an effective frontier character, while its neighboring relationship with the Hive adds another point of interest. It ranks highly for the clarity of its setting and its place at the kingdom’s edge. Hallownest geography.
-
Resting Grounds
Tombs and a subterranean lake give the Resting Grounds a quiet, memorial quality. Its identity is less about a bustling settlement or an extreme environment and more about the traces Hallownest leaves behind. That makes it an evocative setting, even if its premise is less immediately expansive than the areas above it. Hallownest geography.
-
Fungal Wastes
The Fungal Wastes help make fungus a defining part of Hallownest’s geography, rather than a single isolated theme. The developers said early fungus ideas split and reshaped into several distinct areas, including this one, Greenpath, Fog Canyon, and Queen’s Gardens. That design history supports its place in the broader world, though it does not establish an objective quality ranking. Developer interview.

White Palace
The White Palace is a dream-locked location associated with the Pale King and the Ancient Basin. Its unusual status as a hidden, off-map area gives it a different role from Hallownest’s open regional spaces. It ranks here for its importance to the kingdom’s history and its distinct place in the world, rather than for any sourced comparison of its challenge or reward. The HallownestAPI area reference describes the White Palace.
Rank #3

-
Royal Waterways
The Royal Waterways are Hallownest’s sewer and cistern network, tucked beneath the City of Tears. That practical function adds an unglamorous underside to the capital’s grandeur and gives the area a clear relationship to the city above it. Its concept is memorable, even if a drainage network has less immediate visual romance than the capital itself. Hallownest geography.
-
Queen’s Gardens
Queen’s Gardens is part of the way the game’s early fungus concepts were split and reshaped into separate regions. Its place in that design process makes it a useful example of the world’s evolving structure, but the available references do not support a detailed comparison of its routes, encounters, or rewards against every other area. Developer interview.
-
Fog Canyon
Fog Canyon’s acidic clouds and the Teacher’s Archives give it a strong environmental premise, combining a hazardous region with a named landmark. It also belongs to the cluster of areas shaped from the developers’ early fungus ideas. That combination makes it distinctive, though the evidence here does not establish a full gameplay or difficulty comparison. HallownestAPI area reference.

The Abyss
Below the Ancient Basin, the Abyss is a separate late-game location and one of the four named areas omitted from the displayed world map. Its position beneath an already deep region gives it an unmistakable place in Hallownest’s geography. It ranks in the middle because the available setting references establish its location, but not enough comparable detail about its overall exploration or gameplay payoff to justify a higher placement. Hallownest geography.
Rank #4
HOLLOW KNIGHT [E10]- Includes four giant bonus content packs: Hidden Dreams, The Grimm Troupe, Lifeblood, and Godmaster
- Classic side-scrolling action, with all modern trimmings
- Tightly tuned 2D controls. Dodge, dash, and slash your way through even the most deadly adversaries
- Explore a vast interconnected world of forgotten highways, overgrown wilds, and ruined cities
- Forge your own path. The world of Hallownest is expansive and open. Choose which paths you take, which enemies you face, and find your own way forward
-
Forgotten Crossroads
The Forgotten Crossroads serve as Hallownest’s transportation crossroads, giving the region an important geographic function. That role helps orient the kingdom, but it is less singular in identity than the most memorable environments higher on this list. Hallownest geography.
-
The Hive
The Hive is an artificial habitat built by a bee colony along the kingdom’s edge. Its identity comes from a community and its constructed home, setting it apart from areas defined chiefly by caves, ruins, or terrain. The available geography reference establishes that premise, but not enough comparative detail to make a stronger claim about its exploration or gameplay. Hallownest geography.
-
Howling Cliffs
The Howling Cliffs sit on the surface between Dirtmouth and Crystal Peak. Their position makes them part of the transition between the settlement above and the kingdom’s deeper regions, though the sources provide less detail about the area’s individual identity than they do for the capital, Deepnest, or Crystal Peak. Hallownest geography.

Dirtmouth
Dirtmouth is the surface town above the caverns, reached through King’s Pass. It gives Hallownest a settlement at the threshold of the underground kingdom, but as a town above the cave network it offers a different kind of setting from the vast regions below. Hallownest geography.

-
Godhome
Godhome is a dream temple associated with the Godseekers and the Godmaster content. It is also absent from the displayed world map, so it belongs in an all-named-area list without being treated as a conventional region on that map. Its specialized identity matters to the wider game, but the available references do not provide enough comparable detail to rank its encounters or gameplay in relation to every other area. HallownestAPI area reference.
-
Colosseum of Fools
The Colosseum of Fools is named in the area inventory but does not appear on the displayed world map. It belongs in a list of all named areas, though the sources used for this ranking do not establish enough about its encounter design or wider setting to compare those elements with confidence. Its last-place position reflects that limited basis for comparison, not a claim that players universally enjoy it least. Named-area inventory and map note.
Why there is no official route or ranking
The developers’ account of the game’s evolution describes an early planned path through town, crossroads, fungus, and city, with power-ups and revisits along the way. William Pellen characterized that outline as an early plan, not a fixed route for every player. Team Cherry later softened the critical path, and the developers describe how initial ideas changed: the mines became Crystal Peak, fungus concepts became several regions, and concepts involving predators, darkness, and spiders converged in Deepnest. Read the developer interview.

“We plotted a basic path through those areas, so you’d come from town, into the crossroads, into the fungus, get a powerup, go into the city, get a powerup, go into the bone forest, get a powerup, then come back and visit city 2, and then come back and revisit fungus, and by then you’ve done the game, come in and fight the last boss.”
— William Pellen, in the developer interview hosted on Steam; describing an early plan.
The quote is useful context for how the team thought about progression, not evidence of an official order of area quality. The 19-area count likewise describes the scope of the Hollow Knight Wiki inventory, not a publisher-backed metric. Neither that inventory nor the other cited references establishes an authoritative ranking, popularity order, or verified difficulty scale.
