For the strongest overall mix of atmosphere, survival, and accessibility, my ranking is Call of Pripyat, Shadow of Chernobyl, Heart of Chornobyl, then Clear Sky. That order is an editorial judgment, not an official verdict: the games trade off world design, combat and survival, storytelling, technical friction, and how well they work as a starting point. GSC’s descriptions establish the games’ relationships and features, not which one is best.
If you’re wondering what order to play the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. games in, start with the original trilogy in release order—Shadow of Chernobyl, Clear Sky, Call of Pripyat—then play Heart of Chornobyl. Clear Sky is a prequel, but playing it second preserves the original trilogy’s release sequence. GSC describes the newer game as a sequel, while its PR specialist has called it both a direct continuation and a standalone title.

How this ranking weighs the games
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. blends first-person shooting with horror, survival, exploration, and immersive-sim elements. The ranking favors games that make those parts work together: a compelling Zone, meaningful choices and quests, and a strong survival loop. It also considers how much friction a newcomer may face and whether a game is a useful entry point. The list is a critical judgment across those criteria, not a claim that one title is objectively superior.

Call of Pripyat takes the top spot for the strength of its investigative setup and its emphasis on side stories and freedom of exploration. The player follows Major Degtyarev as he investigates a lost expedition, giving the journey a clear purpose without reducing the Zone to a single linear march. Xbox Wire’s official game description highlights those side stories and exploratory freedom.
#1 Best Overall
It is the best fit here for someone who wants the original trilogy’s Zone and quest-driven structure to feel like a considered whole. Its place at number one reflects that balance, not a claim that it has the most consequential history or the easiest first hours.
2. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl
The 2007 original is the natural starting point for the trilogy and the first chapter in GSC’s Legends of the Zone Trilogy. Its enduring appeal is the premise’s directness: enter a dangerous, uncanny landscape and make your way through it as a survivor. The franchise’s mix of FPS, horror, exploration, and immersive-sim play is already the point here, rather than a layer added around a conventional shooter.
It ranks below Call of Pripyat because this list gives extra weight to the later game’s investigative framing and exploratory side content. But Shadow of Chernobyl remains the key choice for players who want to begin where the series began and experience the original trilogy in release order.

3. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl
Heart of Chornobyl is the sequel to the original games and the newest of the four ranked here. GSC calls it a sequel; in a 2024 Xbox Wire interview, GSC PR specialist Zakhar Bocharov described it as “a direct continuation of the plot and a standalone title.” He added that knowing earlier events and characters helps players appreciate some story moments, nods, and Easter eggs.
That makes it a reasonable entry point for someone who wants to begin with the sequel, even though the original games provide useful context. Its lower position is not a judgment on its scale or ambition: this ranking places more weight on the original trilogy’s established identity and the specific strengths of its best entries.
4. S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky
Clear Sky is the 2008 prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl, and its distinctive hook is Faction Wars. Xbox Wire’s description emphasizes the player’s ability to influence the balance among factions, giving the conflict a more overt strategic dimension than the other entries’ central descriptions suggest.

That focus makes it an interesting detour for players already invested in the Zone, but it is the least convincing first stop in this ranking. Its prequel position in the story does not make it the best introduction: for newcomers, following the games’ original release order is the clearest way to approach the trilogy.

- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl (2007)
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Clear Sky (2008; story prequel to Shadow of Chernobyl)
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Call of Pripyat (2009)
- S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl (sequel and standalone title)
The first three are the original trilogy, and the list above follows their release sequence. Although Clear Sky takes place earlier in the story, playing it after Shadow of Chernobyl avoids starting with a prequel. You can approach Heart of Chornobyl as a standalone game, but familiarity with earlier events and characters can add context.
Which games are included?
This ranking covers four released core games: the original trilogy and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2: Heart of Chornobyl. GSC’s legacy catalog dates the trilogy’s releases to 2007, 2008, and 2009, respectively. The titles use differing spellings in official materials: the legacy catalog uses Chernobyl and Pripyat, while newer GSC materials and the trilogy collection use Chornobyl and Prypiat.
For players seeking the original three together, SEGA announced a packaged Nintendo Switch edition of S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Legends of the Zone Trilogy for Japan in March 2025. That announcement does not establish availability in other regions.
