For a first playthrough, follow Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, then Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. That sequence follows release order, introduces Nathan Drake and his relationships naturally, and ends with the later standalone adventure. Uncharted: Golden Abyss is an optional PlayStation Vita prequel: place it before Drake’s Fortune for story chronology, or after Drake’s Deception if you want North American release order. The Nathan Drake Collection covers games 1–3; Legacy of Thieves Collection covers games 4 and The Lost Legacy. Neither collection includes Golden Abyss, so there is no single modern bundle containing every adventure.

Which order should a first-time player use?
Use release order: Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves, Drake’s Deception, A Thief’s End, and The Lost Legacy. The original trilogy establishes Nathan, Sully, Elena and the series’ recurring ideas before the fourth game changes Nathan’s circumstances. The Lost Legacy then works as a natural follow-up because it uses the world and supporting characters introduced by the earlier games while telling its own complete story.

Release order also avoids making an older game feel like a step backward. The first three campaigns were designed as a progression from the 2007 original through the larger set pieces of the sequels. Starting with the oldest available version gives you that progression instead of moving from a newer prequel to an older-looking game.
This route is also the simplest shopping plan. Buy or access the Nathan Drake Collection for the first three campaigns, then choose the PS4 editions or the PS5/PC Legacy of Thieves Collection for the last two. Golden Abyss requires a separate Vita and should not be treated as an item hidden inside either package.

Release order versus story chronology
There are two legitimate six-adventure lists. The release-oriented list is Drake’s Fortune (2007), Among Thieves (2009), Drake’s Deception (2011), Golden Abyss (February 22, 2012 in North America), A Thief’s End (2016), and The Lost Legacy (2017). The practical beginner route leaves the optional Vita title out and moves directly from game 3 to game 4.
For story chronology, put Golden Abyss before Drake’s Fortune. That makes it a prequel in Nathan’s life, but it does not make it the best introduction for everyone. Its Vita controls, separate hardware requirement and limited availability can create an awkward first impression before you have seen how the main console trilogy develops. Choose chronology only if you already own a working Vita or specifically want every Nathan adventure in fictional-time order.
Where does Golden Abyss fit?
Golden Abyss is optional, and its placement depends on what you mean by “in order.” It is a separate PlayStation Vita adventure set before Drake’s Fortune in Nathan’s life. If you want story chronology, play it first. If you want North American release order, play it after Drake’s Deception: the Vita game launched there on February 22, 2012, after the third console game. Some worldwide lists label it 2011 because release dates differed by region, so use the regional date when making a precise timeline.
Bend Studio developed this Vita entry, rather than Naughty Dog developing another console campaign. That makes it an interesting side path, but it is still a full Nathan Drake adventure rather than a required bridge between the numbered games. Its separate developer and platform also explain why it is absent from both modern remastered collections.
For most newcomers, postponing it is simpler. It is not part of either modern collection, and obtaining a Vita copy is a separate hardware and availability question. Treat it as bonus context rather than a prerequisite for understanding any of the five principal campaigns.
What happens in each game, and why is it in this position?
1. Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune
Originally released on PlayStation 3 in 2007, Drake’s Fortune introduces treasure hunter Nathan Drake, journalist Elena Fisher and Victor “Sully” Sullivan during a search connected to El Dorado. It establishes the mixture of exploration, climbing, gunfights, puzzles and cinematic escapes that defines the series. The Nathan Drake Collection presents its single-player campaign on PS4, and PlayStation lists that PS4 collection as playable on PS5.

2. Uncharted 2: Among Thieves
The 2009 sequel follows Nathan into a search involving Marco Polo’s lost fleet and the legendary city of Shambhala. It is the second campaign in the trilogy collection, so playing it immediately after Drake’s Fortune preserves the character and relationship developments that carry forward. Its position is fixed in both release order and the main story sequence.

3. Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception
Released in 2011, Drake’s Deception completes the original trilogy with Nathan and Sully pursuing the Atlantis of the Sands. It closes the three-game arc represented by the Nathan Drake Collection. Finish it before moving to game 4; otherwise, the later game’s references to Nathan’s past and his bond with Sully lose some of their intended context.
4. Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End
A Thief’s End arrived in 2016 and returns to Nathan for a new adventure in which his brother Sam is central. It is the first campaign in Legacy of Thieves Collection. PlayStation says the collection contains the remastered PS5 versions, while the original game was released for PS4. The story can be followed on its own, but the emotional stakes are clearer after the trilogy introduces Nathan’s history and closest allies.
5. Uncharted: The Lost Legacy
The Lost Legacy is a 2017 standalone adventure led by Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross. Its setting is India’s Western Ghats, and it is the second campaign in Legacy of Thieves Collection. It is conventionally played after A Thief’s End: the campaign does not continue Nathan as the playable lead, but it builds on the relationships and world established by the previous games.

Optional: Uncharted: Golden Abyss
This Vita prequel is a separate Nathan Drake adventure that can be inserted before the first game for chronology or after the third game for North American release order. It is not included in the Nathan Drake Collection or Legacy of Thieves Collection. Because it is optional and its platform is distinct, skipping it does not block the main five-game route.
What is the difference between the two modern collections?
The collection names are easy to confuse, but their contents are different. The Nathan Drake Collection is the PS4 package for the first three single-player campaigns. Legacy of Thieves Collection is the PS5 and PC package for A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy. Neither package includes Golden Abyss, and Legacy of Thieves is not a complete-series bundle.

Both collections focus on single-player. The Nathan Drake Collection is described as containing the three single-player campaigns, and the Legacy of Thieves FAQ says its release does not support the original titles’ multiplayer. Do not buy either collection expecting the old multiplayer modes.
The publisher’s PC announcement described Legacy of Thieves as “two full-length single-player games.” That phrase is a count of the two campaigns in that collection, not a claim that the PC edition contains six adventures. The announcement was dated September 15, 2022, and identified October 19, 2022 as the PC release date; it should be read as a historical launch announcement rather than a promise of newer ports.

Can you play the series on PS4, PS5, PC or Vita?
PS4
On PS4, the documented route is the Nathan Drake Collection for games 1–3, followed by the PS4 editions of A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy. Those original PS4 releases are distinct from the later PS5 remasters in Legacy of Thieves.
PS5
PS5 owners can use the PS4 Nathan Drake Collection, which PlayStation lists as playable on PS5, then use the native PS5 Legacy of Thieves Collection for games 4 and 5. PlayStation cautions that some PS4 features may not be present when the older collection is played on PS5. A first-party PS5 disc listing exists for Legacy of Thieves; check the current listing and regional stock before buying.
PC
The documented PC release is Legacy of Thieves Collection, launched October 19, 2022. It contains only A Thief’s End and The Lost Legacy, not the original trilogy. A PC-only player may therefore start with game 4 and continue to The Lost Legacy; PlayStation describes the adventures as able to stand alone, but you will miss the earlier introductions and history.
There is no confirmed PC route in this lineup for Drake’s Fortune, Among Thieves or Drake’s Deception. Do not buy Legacy of Thieves expecting those campaigns to unlock later, and do not count an unverified port as part of a current platform plan.

Golden Abyss is the separate Vita entry. Its existence does not establish a current digital port, guaranteed retail stock or compatibility with the console collections. Verify the format, condition and regional availability of any Vita copy before treating it as part of your purchase plan.
Can you start with Uncharted 4?
Yes. A Thief’s End is structured so that its central adventure can be followed without owning the first three games, and PlayStation presents the series’ adventures as standing alone despite continuity. Starting there is practical for PC players because Legacy of Thieves is the documented PC collection. The trade-off is narrative context: you will encounter Nathan, Sully and Elena after their earlier adventures rather than seeing those relationships form.
If you later decide you want the full arc, go back to the Nathan Drake Collection and play its campaigns in order. Do not assume that the PC collection will fill that gap; its confirmed contents remain game 4 and The Lost Legacy.

What are the main buying and edition traps?
Assuming Legacy of Thieves contains all five games
It does not. Legacy of Thieves contains two campaigns only. Games 1–3 require the Nathan Drake Collection or their original releases, while Golden Abyss remains a Vita-only optional entry in this lineup.
Expecting multiplayer
The remaster collections are single-player packages. Their collection descriptions do not restore the multiplayer modes associated with the original releases.
Misunderstanding the PS4-to-PS5 upgrade
PlayStation’s upgrade guidance says eligible PS4 owners may upgrade for an additional fee, subject to the terms in effect when they claim it. A PS4 disc owner must insert that disc into the PS5 to download or play the upgraded version, and the disc-upgrade path cannot be used on the disc-free PS5 Digital Edition. PlayStation also excludes a copy of Uncharted 4 claimed through PlayStation Plus from the digital upgrade. Because eligibility, fees and store terms can change, confirm the current conditions before purchasing.
Do not assume every used disc, bundled code or subscription entitlement qualifies. Check whether you own an eligible PS4 edition, whether your console has a disc drive, and whether the offer still applies in your region. A PS5 disc copy of Legacy of Thieves is a straightforward alternative, but prices and stock are variable rather than permanent specifications.
Confusing the movie with a game chapter
The Uncharted film has its own storyline. It is not an interlude to place between the games, so watch it separately rather than using it to alter the play order.

Mention it only if your definition of “every Uncharted game” includes spin-offs; it is not an essential story chapter and should not be inserted into the six-adventure chronology. Who developed Uncharted: Golden Abyss?
