Every Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 Class, Ranked Worst to Best (Patch 14.0)

Bulwark is the best all-around PvE class in Space Marine 2 Patch 14.0, while Techmarine and Vanguard follow closely behind. Here is the current ranking of all seven classes—and the patch changes that make older tier lists outdated.

For an all-around PvE ranking in the live Patch 14.0 meta, Bulwark is the best class overall, followed by Techmarine and Vanguard. Assault is the weakest general-purpose pick—not because it is unusable, but because Patch 14.0 reduced the reliability of its Ground Pound and increased its ability cooldown.

This is an editorial ranking for Operations, Stratagems, and Siege, weighing team utility, survivability, damage consistency, and how often a class can contribute across different missions. It is not an official tier list: the developers publish balance changes and class roles, not a universal best-to-worst ranking. Eternal War has different priorities, and every class can be effective with the right player and build.

The current roster contains seven classes: Tactical, Assault, Vanguard, Bulwark, Sniper, Heavy, and Techmarine. Techmarine was added free in Patch 12 and is available in Operations, Stratagems, Siege, and Eternal War. See the official Space Marine 2 patch announcements for the live balance history.

7. Assault

Assault is the most demanding class to rank highly because its value depends heavily on positioning, enemy density, and accurate use of its jump-based attacks. When the class connects, it can reach priority targets and clear clustered enemies quickly. When it misses, it has fewer dependable ways to contribute at range than most other classes.

Patch 14.0 made that weakness more noticeable. Assault’s ability charge cooldown increased from 12 to 16 seconds. The update also reduced the minimum and maximum Ground Pound damage radii for several weapons and narrowed the maximum charge-aim angle from 50 degrees to 38 degrees. The radius is not universal: chainsword, power fist, and power axe use different values from thunder hammer and power sword. That makes old guides presenting one Ground Pound radius—and old rankings based on pre-14.0 reliability—unsafe to follow.

Why it ranks last: Assault offers explosive melee access, but its strongest moments are less consistent than the best classes’ defensive, ranged, or team-support tools. It remains a fun specialist pick for players who understand enemy spacing and melee timing, not the safest recommendation for a new or solo player.

6. Sniper

Sniper is excellent at removing dangerous targets before they disrupt the squad. It rewards careful aim and target selection, and its long-range identity is particularly valuable when a mission gives the team room to establish sightlines.

Its lower all-around ranking reflects dependence on those sightlines and on the rest of the squad controlling close-range pressure. A Sniper who is forced into constant crowd fighting cannot exploit the class’s main advantage as consistently as a Heavy, Vanguard, or Techmarine can.

The class is stronger than older guides may suggest. Patch 12.2 reduced the base ability cooldown from 125 to 90 seconds. Patch 11 extended Precision Targeting to Extremis and Terminus-level enemies, removed the cooldown from Guardian Protocol, and changed Ambush so it also slows nearby enemies for 10 seconds. Sniper is therefore a powerful specialist, but its value is more dependent on map geometry and player accuracy than the classes above it.

5. Tactical

Tactical is the most difficult class to place confidently because its perk system is scheduled for a major rework in the update after Patch 14.0. Any ranking that treats the current Tactical setup as permanently settled is likely to age quickly.

For now, Tactical remains a flexible choice built around information, target marking, and adaptable weapon selection. That flexibility makes it useful in nearly every squad, but it does not always provide the same immediate survivability or area denial as the higher-ranked classes.

One important current correction: Auspex Scan no longer affects Burn damage in Patch 14.0. Older builds that specifically recommend Auspex Scan to amplify burn damage are outdated. Tactical should be judged by its current target-identification and team-damage opportunities, not by that removed interaction.

Patch 13 also changed bolter damage calculations, increasing non-headshot damage by approximately 30 percent, removing the global headshot modifier from Majoris and Extremis enemies, and making headshot bonuses more dependent on weapon stats. Patch 13.1 restored gunstrike damage to its pre-Patch-13 values after the earlier rebalance unintentionally affected secondary-weapon gunstrikes. Damage charts created before those changes should not be treated as current.

4. Heavy

Heavy is one of the strongest straightforward damage classes. It can apply sustained ranged pressure and is particularly comfortable when the squad needs someone to hold a lane, punish approaching enemies, or keep firing while teammates handle objectives.

  • Games Workshop - Warhammer 40,000 - Space Marines: Primaris Intercessors

Heavy ranks below Vanguard, Techmarine, and Bulwark because personal ranged output is not the same as complete team coverage. Heavy is less naturally suited to solving every close-quarters problem, and its effectiveness depends on ammunition, firing position, and the team’s ability to prevent enemies from collapsing onto it.

Patch 14.0’s Salamanders Heavy Champion and signature Multi-Melta skin are cosmetic Season Pass content. They do not add a new Heavy subclass or change the class’s base mechanics. The same patch also planned robes and tabards for Vanguard and Heavy in a later update, so cosmetic guides may not match the eventual customization interface.

3. Vanguard

Vanguard is now best understood as a ranged/melee hybrid, not primarily as the team’s healer. Patch 11 reoriented the class toward that hybrid role, making older rankings built around its former healing identity misleading.

Its mobility lets it pressure priority targets and move between ranged and melee engagements more naturally than most classes. That versatility is why it ranks above the more specialized picks. It can contribute when the squad needs damage, mobility, or a player willing to engage dangerous enemies at closer range.

Patch 14.0 substantially improved Vanguard’s ability: cooldown fell from 30 to 18 seconds, damage increased from 10 to 25, and charges increased from two to three. Patch 12.2 also increased Moving Target’s ability restoration from 5% to 10% and Retribution’s melee damage bonus from 25% to 30%.

Vanguard does not take the top spot because its mobility is most valuable when the player chooses good targets and avoids overextending. It is a high-ceiling class with a much healthier current identity than its old “healer” reputation suggests.

2. Techmarine

Techmarine is the strongest new addition to the roster and the best class for players who want to shape the battlefield rather than simply charge into it. The developer describes it as an “expert in crowd control and area defense”, using automated weapons attached to its armour.

That area-control identity gives Techmarine unusually strong value in objectives, defensive positions, and encounters where the squad must manage several threats at once. It is available in all current PvE and PvP modes: Operations, Stratagems, Siege, and Eternal War.

Techmarine also has the exclusive Omnissian Axe and 25 available perks. Its perk system has received several corrections since release: Patch 12.1 clarified Battlefield Repairs so that any squad member restores one additional armour segment for each Finisher of a Majoris or Extremis enemy; Patch 12.1 also fixed Decapitating Stratagem so it restores correctly only when fully empty. Patch 12.2 corrected interactions involving Counteroffensive Protocols, Lethal Perimeter, Able Reload, Static Charge, and Decapitating Stratagem. In Patch 14.0, Methodical Destruction was changed to work with Prometium Can.

Techmarine narrowly misses first place because automated defenses and area denial are strongest when the player understands where the fight will happen. It is less immediately forgiving when the squad is constantly moving or the player deploys its tools without a plan. For coordinated teams, however, it can be the most strategically valuable class in the game.

1. Bulwark

Bulwark is the best all-around PvE class in Patch 14.0. Its shield-oriented identity gives it the most reliable answer to chaotic close-range encounters, while its defensive presence helps the entire squad survive situations that would overwhelm less durable classes.

Bulwark is not necessarily the highest-damage pick, and skilled players can produce more spectacular results with Assault, Sniper, or Vanguard. It wins this ranking because survivability and team stability matter in Operations, Siege, and other PvE encounters. A Bulwark can keep pressure away from vulnerable teammates and create time for the squad to revive, execute finishers, complete objectives, or focus a major threat.

There is an important Patch 14.0 drawback: the damage cap required to knock Bulwark out of shield stance was reduced from 300 to 200. Shield stance is therefore not an unconditional answer to incoming damage; the player still has to recognize when to reposition or stop relying on the shield.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Bulwark also has several current customization caveats. Patch 13 reported that Storm Shields could not be customised when Bulwark had an Iron Halo equipped, and that selecting an Armour Set Template could make wargear unavailable. Patch 14.0’s Wargear 2.01 changes added or prepared additional wargear slots, but Bulwark capes were explicitly not included in the immediate customization changes because robes first needed to be separated from chest pieces. Those are presentation and interface issues, not reasons to downgrade the class’s combat performance.

How the ranking changes by mode

Mode or priority Classes most likely to rise Why
Operations and Siege Bulwark, Techmarine, Vanguard Survivability, area control, mobility, and team utility matter more than a single damage profile.
Ranged target removal Sniper, Heavy, Tactical These classes can contribute more consistently when the squad has sightlines and firing positions.
Fast melee pressure Vanguard, Assault Mobility and aggressive melee access become more valuable, especially for experienced players.
Eternal War Player- and map-dependent All weapons and equipment are now available from Level 1, so old rankings based on PvP unlock progression are obsolete.

In Eternal War, there is no reason to copy a tier list based on the old progression system: Patch 14.0 removed PvP progression and made all weapons and equipment available from Level 1. PvP rankings should instead be built around map, team composition, weapon familiarity, and the player’s ability to win engagements.

What changed the most for current class guides?

  • There are seven classes, not six. Techmarine was added free in Patch 12.
  • Vanguard is not primarily a healer. Its current design emphasizes a ranged/melee hybrid.
  • Auspex Scan does not boost Burn damage. That Patch 14.0 interaction is no longer valid.
  • Perk loadouts are tied to weapon loadouts. Patch 13’s loadout system lets players switch perk setups with weapons, but perks are not globally independent of weapon loadouts.
  • Use the Battle Simulator for testing. Patch 13 added a customizable Battle-Barge arena for testing enemies, weapons, equipment, and loadouts.
  • Do not trust pre-Patch-13 damage charts. Bolter and gunstrike calculations changed, including the later Patch 13.1 correction to gunstrike damage.

Final ranking

  1. Bulwark — best overall PvE stability and team protection.
  2. Techmarine — outstanding crowd control and area defense.
  3. Vanguard — versatile ranged/melee hybrid with major Patch 14.0 buffs.
  4. Heavy — dependable ranged pressure, but less flexible in close quarters.
  5. Tactical — adaptable, though its major perk rework is still pending.
  6. Sniper — excellent specialist damage with greater sightline dependence.
  7. Assault — powerful in expert hands, but less consistent after the Ground Pound changes.
