The most reliable way to beat Spooky Steve in Megabonk is to use Dexecutioner for Execute procs and a small number of long-duration crowd-control effects to keep him away from you. Athena is the safest character: combine Aegis, Dexecutioner, Frostwalker, and Black Hole with Duration, Cooldown, Quantity, and Projectile Count upgrades. Do not expect ordinary damage, critical hits, or a large collection of stun items to kill Steve reliably.
This guide reflects the current game state identified through official update notes, including v1.0.69, dated February 4, 2026.

How to reach Spooky Steve
Spooky Steve is a Graveyard boss introduced in the Spooky Update. He can appear in either the first or second Crypt, but the practical route is to leave the opening Crypt and prepare your build outside before returning through the second Crypt.

- Leave the opening Crypt.
- Explore the Graveyard and find the four marked coffins.
- Open each coffin and defeat its guardian: Jeff, Mike, Ted, and Gary.
- Collect the Crypt Key from every defeated guardian.
- Use all four keys at the marked Crypt Door.
- Enter the second Crypt and prepare to fight Steve before progressing to Big Bob.
Coffin locations are not fixed to one reusable route, so search the Graveyard during each run. Defeating a guardian is not enough if you leave without collecting the key.

Steve appears after a Crypt timer reaches zero. A December 15 hotfix added a short grace period, so he does not necessarily spawn at the exact moment the timer displays zero. Treat that window as preparation time, not as a dependable opportunity to keep looting. The Graveyard guide and official update notes document the route and timer behavior.
The damage strategy: build around Execute
Steve has approximately 340.3 Ud health, making a conventional flat-DPS strategy impractical. The consistently reported solution is Dexecutioner’s Execute effect. Its normal weapon description lists a 2% chance to execute on hit, but Steve has a special interaction reported by current guides and community testing: successful Execute procs remove substantial portions of his health.
This is not a universal rule that lets Execute work normally on every boss. Ordinary bosses and minibosses are generally excluded from standard Execute behavior, so treat Steve as a specific exception rather than proof that any Execute weapon will solve every boss fight. Prioritize hit opportunities, not only Damage
Your goal is to make Dexecutioner hit Steve as often as possible. Prioritize:
- Projectile Count, so more projectiles can connect.
- Projectile Size, which makes hits easier to land.
- Cooldown and Attack Speed, for more attempts over time.
- Quantity, where available, to increase the number of attack opportunities.
Joe’s Dagger can add another Execute-related effect, but it is optional rather than the core of the strategy. If you use it, note that v1.0.69 fixed a bug that could cause Joe’s Dagger Execute to deal no damage; see the official v1.0.69 notes.

Best build: Athena
Athena is the safest choice because Aegis can protect you from Steve’s otherwise deadly contact damage. Use:

Athena’s Aegis is not universal invulnerability. Community reports describe it as safer because it can fully block a hit, while other characters may still take overflow damage. Keep moving and preserve an escape route even when Aegis is available.

Megachad is a viable alternative if you prefer a more aggressive setup. Use Flex to survive or interrupt Steve’s attacks, keep Dexecutioner as the primary damage source, and add Frostwalker, Black Hole, or another reliable control tool.
This route can scale faster, but it is less forgiving than Athena’s Aegis setup. It requires better positioning and gives you less room for mistakes when Steve reaches you.
How to use crowd control without making Steve immune
Frostwalker and Black Hole are valuable because the fight is a race between Steve’s approach and your Execute attempts. Thunder Mitts can also be unusually effective: current item documentation lists an 8 m radius, a 10-second cooldown, and a 3-second stun, with stun duration scaling through Duration.

Use one Thunder Mitts as a practical starting point rather than automatically stacking copies. Additional copies increase its damage, but current item documentation does not show them increasing its stun duration, radius, or cooldown performance. The one-copy recommendation is community-tested optimization, not an official hard rule.
More crowd control is not always better. The official Spooky Update notes state that enemies normally become immune after 15 stun or freeze applications. Player testing indicates that repeatedly applying many short stuns can make Steve resistant before Dexecutioner finishes the job. A few longer-duration control sources are generally more reliable than every available stun and freeze effect.
For that reason, be cautious about combining Thunder Mitts with Lightning Orb. Community reports warn that the combination can apply lightning-based control too frequently and accelerate Steve’s resistance. This is a player-tested failure mode, not a separately documented official rule.
Correct fight procedure
- Do not intentionally fight in the opening Crypt. Leave, level up, collect the four keys, and return through the second Crypt.
- Enter a wide room. Avoid corners, walls, lava edges, and narrow doorways where Steve can pin you after control ends.
- Stop looting when the timer reaches zero. Use the grace period to move into position and activate your defensive plan.
- Keep Steve controlled while Dexecutioner attacks. The important statistic is the number of Execute attempts, not the size of your displayed Damage number.
- Maintain an escape lane. Move enough to stay in open space, but do not chase Steve into a corner or run through hazards.
When Steve is frozen, stunned, or held by Black Hole, let your weapons continue working. Constant repositioning can reduce the number of hits that connect, while standing still risks a lethal collision once control fails.

Steve’s health barely moves
Your build is probably relying on ordinary damage, crits, Thorns, or Boss Buster instead of Execute. Add Dexecutioner and improve Projectile Count, Size, Cooldown, Attack Speed, and Quantity. Boss Buster can help, but it is not a substitute for the Execute strategy.

Steve stops freezing or stunning
You may have consumed his crowd-control tolerance through too many separate applications. Reduce the number of stun sources and invest in Duration. One long control effect is usually more useful than several short ones.
Steve reaches you despite Frostwalker or Black Hole
You may lack Duration, attack frequency, or Execute pressure. It is also possible that Steve has become resistant to your repeated control effects. Fight in a larger room, stop adding short-duration control sources, and focus upgrades on Dexecutioner’s hit frequency.
Athena’s Aegis does not save you
Aegis can block a hit, but it does not mean you can ignore positioning or contact damage. Keep an escape route and avoid corners. If Steve connects repeatedly or your defensive timing fails, Aegis may not prevent death.
A Crypt Key appears to be missing
Return to each coffin encounter and check that you actually collected the key after defeating its guardian. Killing a guardian alone does not complete the key-collection step.

What not to believe about this fight
- “Steve spawns instantly at zero.” A hotfix added a short grace period.
- “You must kill him in the first Crypt.” The safer route is to leave, build outside, and return through the second Crypt.
- “A huge Damage or Crit build will eventually win.” Current guides and player reports identify Execute as the practical answer to his enormous health pool.
- “More stun items are always better.” Excessive control applications can cause resistance or immunity.
- “Multiple Thunder Mitts improve stun duration or cooldown.” Current item documentation says copies increase damage, not those control properties.
- “You need a console command to spawn Steve.” The official notes do not document a Steve-spawn command or menu setting. The game console opens with F10, but this boss is triggered through the Graveyard Crypt timer.
Reward
Defeating Spooky Steve unlocks Roberto. If the fight is failing, do not rebuild around a larger generic Damage number first. Build around Dexecutioner hit frequency, use limited long-duration crowd control, and give yourself enough open space to survive until the Execute procs land.
