How this ranking works
PlayStation’s combat overview sums up the system: “Each weapon serves a specific purpose, and knowing when to switch will determine your success in combat.” Accordingly, the melee ranking favors matchup coverage and ease of use; ranged weapons are judged by their range and handling trade-offs; quickfire tools by the openings, control, or escape options they create. These are editorial rankings, not developer-issued tiers or statistical comparisons.

Katana
The katana is the most dependable all-round choice and a natural starting point for learning melee combat. Its precise, balanced style suits duels against sword users. It ranks first for broad usefulness, not because official sources identify it as the hardest-hitting weapon.

Yari
The yari’s reach and ability to interrupt attacks give it valuable control over spacing. It is the counter for sickle-wielding enemies, letting Atsu disrupt their approach rather than simply trading blows. That combination of reach and interruption makes it useful beyond its specific matchup.

Ōdachi (Odachi)
The heavy ōdachi is designed to counter heavy enemies. PlayStation describes its attacks as unstoppable; its role is to bring pressure and stagger potential against large opponents. Its slower, heavier style makes it less adaptable than the top two when the fight calls for speed or quick changes of direction.

Kusarigama
The kusarigama combines chain and sickle for wide reach and crowd control, and it is suited to breaking shields. It can be the best melee option against shield users or groups. Its lower overall placement reflects its more specialized strengths, not a lack of value in those encounters.

Dual katana
Fast, flowing dual-katana combos quickly overwhelm spear enemies. It is an excellent pressure weapon when facing that counter class, but its defining advantage is more matchup-specific than the katana’s balanced role or the yari’s reach and interruption.

Matchup reminder: use katana against sword users, dual katana against spears, ōdachi against heavy enemies, yari against sickle users, and kusarigama against shields and groups. The game rewards switching rather than insisting on one melee weapon.
Ranged weapons, ranked
The available comparisons describe roles and handling rather than shared damage measurements. These placements weigh how readily each weapon creates a useful ranged opportunity; they do not establish a universal damage winner.

The medium bow offers a practical middle ground: moderate damage and draw speed, according to GameSpot’s weapon guide. That balance makes it the most flexible bow choice when you need to aim and fire without committing to the longbow’s slower draw.

Yumi
The longbow delivers considerable damage at distance and can pierce helmets, but its draw is slower. Choose it when range and a more deliberate shot matter more than firing quickly.

Tanegashima
The Tanegashima matchlock offers a powerful shot against armored enemies, balanced by slow reloading. Its specialized punch makes it effective when the opening is worth the reload commitment, but less convenient for repeated quick shots.
PlayStation’s combat overview also describes specialized arrows for the short and longbows, and two ammunition types for the Tanegashima. The right ranged option therefore depends on the target and the time available to aim or reload.

Quickfire tools are situational by design: they create control, openings, area damage, or a route back to stealth rather than replacing a melee weapon.

Kunai
Kunai inflict major stagger, making them a strong way to interrupt an enemy and create an opening. PlayStation’s builds guide also connects kunai with chain assassinations, adding stealth value when enemies are positioned for that approach.

Smoke Bomb
A smoke bomb helps Atsu return to stealth after detection. It ranks highly for its distinctive escape and reset utility, especially when continuing an encounter openly is a poor option.

Metsubushi
Metsubushi briefly blinds enemies, creating a short window to reposition or attack. It is a control tool rather than a damage-focused choice.

Scorch Bomb is an explosive option against groups. Its value rises when several enemies are close enough to make area damage more useful than concentrating on one target.

Oni’s Flame
Oni’s Flame temporarily ignites Atsu’s melee weapon and makes attacks unblockable. Use it when enemies are defending against direct melee attacks and you need a way through their guard.

Tanzutsu
The Tanzutsu is a matchlock pistol that can interrupt an attack with a pistol parry. Its appeal is a timely defensive interruption, rather than sustained ranged pressure.
The quickfire order is an editorial comparison of how often each tool can create a useful opening or solve a distinct problem; it is not a claim that one tool deals more damage than another.

- Sword users: katana.
- Spear enemies: dual katana.
- Heavy enemies: ōdachi.
- Sickle-wielding enemies: yari.
- Shield users or groups: kusarigama.
- Armored enemies at range: Tanegashima, if you can afford its slow reload.
- Enemies blocking melee attacks: Oni’s Flame can make attacks unblockable; kunai can stagger and create an opening.
When do you get all the weapons?
Spoiler-light unlock overview: the full arsenal is not available from the start. Push Square’s weapon guide identifies the Wolf Blade katana as the starting weapon; dual katana, yari, ōdachi, and kusarigama are associated with their respective quests or sensei quests. The Hankyu and Yumi are purchases from the bowyer, while the Tanegashima is tied to story progress. Quickfire tools are acquired through quests, bounties, and story progression. For a single all-purpose pick, start with the katana: it is the most balanced option in this ranking and works naturally in sword duels. For the best results across the game, though, learn the matchup loop and switch weapons. The weapon that counters an enemy is more useful than a fixed favorite when the fight is built around distinct enemy types.
