One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchYou can start Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2 without playing the first game. It is a third-person action game with three distinct ways to play: a story campaign, replayable PvE Operations, and competitive PvP in Eternal War. The campaign works solo or with up to two friends; Operations can be played solo with bots, but their progress needs an online connection to carry between sessions. This guide covers the mode and connection differences, platforms, crossplay, and the October 1, 2026 update.
Do you need to play Space Marine 1 first?
No. Saber Interactive says the sequel is a fresh story that can be understood on its own, even though characters return from the first game. In its Space Marine 2 FAQ, the developer answers: “Not at all! While there are returning characters, it’s a fresh story that can be understood as its own without having played the first game.”
The story follows Lieutenant Titus as he fights Tyranid forces. Knowing the first game may add context about returning characters, but it is not a prerequisite for following this campaign.
What are the game’s modes?
The modes offer different kinds of play, so choose based on whether you want a story, repeatable team missions, or competitive matches.

#1 Best Overall
- Embody the superhuman skill and brutality of a Space Marine. Unleash deadly abilities and devastating weaponry to obliterate the relentless Tyranid swarms. Defend the Imperium in spectacular third-person action in solo or co-op modes.
- Purge the relentless Tyranid swarms as legendary Space Marine Titus in a spectacular new campaign. Play solo or with up to 2 friends in 3 player co-op.
- Enjoy intense, gory and fast-paced third-person action with hundreds of enemies on screen, from the creators of blockbuster co-op shooter World War Z.
- Standard edition includes: Base game, Macragge’s Chosen DLC, with 3 unique cosmetics for your Bolt Rifle, Chainsword & Power Armour
Campaign: story-driven action, solo or co-op
The campaign is a third-person action story that you can play alone or online with up to two friends, for a squad of three. The official PlayStation game page describes the campaign and its co-op option. If you want to follow Titus’s story at your own pace, this is the place to start.
Operations: replayable PvE missions
Operations are missions separate from the campaign, built around replay and selectable Space Marine classes. PlayStation’s official description lists six PvE classes. Saber says each Operations squad can have only one Space Marine of each class, so a group may need to coordinate selections rather than all choosing the same one. The official Focus Entertainment FAQ says you can play Operations solo with bots.
Eternal War: competitive PvP
Eternal War is the game’s player-versus-player mode. Teams are limited to two players of each class, according to Saber’s FAQ. Its crossplay rules also differ from those for the campaign and Operations; see the crossplay section below before planning a match with friends on other platforms.

Can you play solo, co-op, or offline?
Solo play is available in the campaign and Operations, but connection requirements and progress persistence differ by mode.

|---|---|---|
| Campaign | Yes | Campaign progress saves offline on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S, according to Saber’s FAQ. Co-op is online-only. |
| Operations | Yes, with bots | Co-op is online-only. Saber says progress earned while offline does not carry over to the next session; an online connection is required for Operations progress to persist. |
| Eternal War | No solo-match option is stated in the cited FAQ | Competitive multiplayer; the cited FAQ describes crossplay pools but does not establish an offline option. |
Saber also says there is no friendly fire in the campaign, Operations, or Eternal War. That means teammates’ attacks will not damage you in those modes.
Does Space Marine 2 have crossplay?
Yes, but PvP has a platform split. Focus and Saber describe unrestricted crossplay between PC and consoles for the campaign and PvE. In Eternal War, PC and console players are placed in separate pools. If your group intends to play PvP together, check which platforms everyone uses before settling on that mode.

What platforms is Space Marine 2 on?
Focus lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with Steam and Epic Games Store as PC storefronts. Its FAQ also says the game is playable on Steam Deck and available through GeForce NOW. Those are distinct options: the Steam Deck statement concerns handheld play, while GeForce NOW is a cloud gaming service. Availability can depend on the service and region.
The official PlayStation page lists a PS5 edition and associated editions and add-ons. Store listings and prices vary by market and can change, so check the live storefront for the version available to you. The cited official sources do not establish current PC system requirements or comparable performance figures, so no hardware recommendation or frame-rate claim is included here.
What did the latest update add?
Focus announced the second Anniversary Update, also called Patch 15, on October 1, 2026, for PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. The announcement says it begins the game’s third year of post-launch support. Its main additions include:

See the October 1, 2026 Anniversary Update announcement for the publisher’s full description. The listed DLCs are cosmetic content, not required to access the update’s core gameplay additions.
Do editions or paid DLC unlock essential gameplay?
Focus and Saber describe gameplay features as free and paid DLC as cosmetic; Focus also identifies the Season Pass 3 DLC in the October 2026 update as cosmetic. When comparing editions, look at which cosmetic packs or passes are included rather than assuming a more expensive edition is needed for essential gameplay. Verify the contents and price on your regional storefront, since live listings can differ.
Focus’s FAQ says the game is not currently on Xbox Game Pass, but subscription catalogs can change. Check the live Xbox catalog if subscription access affects your decision.

Which mode should you start with?
- For the story: Start with the campaign, whether you want to play alone or with up to two online friends.
- For repeatable missions: Try Operations; you can run them solo with bots or team up, and squads must use distinct classes.
- For competitive matches: Choose Eternal War, keeping its PC-versus-console crossplay split and two-per-class team limit in mind.
- For unreliable internet: Campaign is the more practical choice because its progress saves offline. Operations progress earned offline will not persist into the next session.
