An expansion pass is a single purchase that bundles multiple downloadable releases for one game. Depending on the publisher, it can include story expansions, new areas, characters, cosmetic items, challenge modes or other add-ons. The exact contents, delivery schedule and purchase rules are specific to each game; “expansion pass,” “season pass” and similar labels do not guarantee the same package.

Pass content can be mandatory or optional
Publishers decide whether the items in a pass can also be bought separately. Nintendo’s listing for Fire Emblem: Three Houses is an explicit pass-only case: its $24.99 USD ($31.49 CAD) Expansion Pass includes four waves of DLC, and Nintendo states that the DLC packs are not available for individual purchase. If you want any of those packs, the pass is the required purchase.
Other games sell a bundle alongside separate packs. Xbox describes the Forza Horizon 6 Expansion Bundle as containing two expansions at $49.99 and says the price is reduced compared with buying each expansion separately. That wording makes a separate-purchase comparison relevant, but you should still confirm the individual listings and their current prices in your storefront.
The value test: compare only the DLC you will use
The headline discount is not your personal saving if the bundle contains content you would never play. Calculate value from your intended purchases, not from the publisher’s total number of items.
- List the DLC you would definitely buy. Include only releases you would purchase on their own at today’s price. Put “maybe” items in a separate list instead of treating them as guaranteed value.
- Record current prices in one storefront and currency. Use the same platform, region and edition for every item. A console price, PC price, Canadian price and US price are not interchangeable.
- Add the individual prices. Include sales tax or other checkout charges where the store applies them. A displayed pre-tax price can produce a different final total.
- Record the pass’s current checkout price. Distinguish a temporary sale price from the regular price. For example, Nintendo’s Splatoon 3 listing displays a regular price of $24.99 and a current price of $17.49, marked 30% off.
- Compare like with like. If the pass includes unreleased waves, verify that the current listing promises them and whether the pass price is locked. Check whether buying a released pack now changes the later bundle price; stores handle that situation differently.
- Decide based on your use rate. If the pass costs less than the individual items you would actually buy, it is financially favorable. If it costs more, or if most of its contents are unwanted, individual DLC is the safer choice.
A compact formula is:
Personal pass saving = (sum of current prices for DLC you will use) − (pass checkout price).

A positive result means the pass is cheaper for your planned purchases. A negative result means buying only selected DLC costs less. If the pass contains items you might enjoy later, treat that as optional upside rather than guaranteed savings.

Fire Emblem: Three Houses: a pass-only decision
Because Nintendo says the four DLC waves cannot be bought separately, there is no selective-purchase calculation for this pass. The practical question is whether the complete package at $24.99 USD or $31.49 CAD contains enough content for you to justify that price. If you want one wave but not the others, the pass still remains the required route; waiting for an individual sale is not an option under the stated purchase rule.
Splatoon 3: sale timing can reverse the result
The Splatoon 3 listing demonstrates why you must use the checkout price you see now. The regular Expansion Pass price is $24.99, while the cited listing shows $17.49, a 30% reduction. A buyer comparing individual DLC against the regular price could reach a different conclusion from a buyer purchasing during the displayed sale. Recheck the store immediately before paying, and note the end date or terms of any promotion if the listing provides them.

Forza Horizon 6: verify the base game before buying
The Xbox listing gives the Expansion Bundle a $49.99 price and explicitly describes a reduction versus buying the two expansions separately. It also states that the base game or an eligible Game Pass subscription is required. A bundle can therefore be a good DLC price and still be the wrong purchase if you do not own the base game, do not maintain the qualifying subscription, or cannot access the required edition on your platform.

EA Play: a discount that changes the arithmetic
EA says EA Play members save 10% on EA digital content, including full games, Season Passes and DLC, on supported platforms. Apply that member price to the items you are actually eligible to buy, then compare it with the pass price shown at checkout. The cited policy does not establish that the 10% saving stacks with every sale or every storefront promotion, so do not assume two discounts combine unless the checkout clearly applies both.
When an expansion pass is the better buy
- You want most of the included releases. The more of the bundle you would otherwise purchase, the more likely its price advantage is real.
- The current pass price beats your personal total. Use same-store, same-currency prices and include applicable tax.
- The pass includes future content you already value. Confirm that unreleased waves are promised, how they will be delivered and whether the price is fixed after purchase.
- Individual buying is unavailable. In a pass-only arrangement such as the stated Fire Emblem: Three Houses policy, the pass is the only legal way to obtain those packs.
- A subscription discount applies. An eligible member discount, such as EA Play’s stated 10% on supported EA digital content, can lower the effective pass price. Check the final checkout total rather than calculating from a list price.
- You prefer one purchase and automatic access. A pass can simplify ownership when you intend to play every included release and do not want to monitor separate launches.
When individual DLC is safer or cheaper
- You want only one specific pack. Paying for a bundle of unwanted content is not a saving, even when the advertised bundle percentage looks impressive.
- You are uncertain about future releases. Buy a released pack after reviews, performance reports or compatibility information are available, if the game permits separate purchases.
- You are willing to wait for sales. Individual packs may be discounted at different times. A pass bought at full price can lose to a later sale on the one add-on you actually want.
- You already own one item. Check whether the storefront offers an upgrade credit or adjusts the bundle. Some stores do not, so buying a pass after a separate purchase can create duplicate spending.
- The base game or subscription situation is unsettled. Confirm that you can play the DLC on your account before committing to a larger bundle.
- Platform or region prices differ. A pass may be cheaper on one platform while an individual pack is cheaper on another, but licenses and saves may not transfer. Compare the platform on which you will actually play.
Variables that commonly change the calculation
Release timing
Passes often sell before every wave is available. The promised content may arrive months later, and a delayed or cancelled release can affect perceived value even when the purchase contract remains unchanged. Look for the publisher’s delivery terms, the number of waves, and whether the store grants access automatically or requires a manual download.
Base-game ownership and edition requirements
DLC normally requires the matching base game, but the exact rule can involve an edition, platform family or subscription. The Forza Horizon 6 listing expressly requires the base game or an eligible Game Pass subscription. Treat that requirement as part of the cost: if you need to buy the game as well, add it to your budget even though it is not part of the pass price.

Prices can vary between Nintendo, Xbox, PlayStation and PC stores, and between countries. A US-dollar price cannot be used to prove savings for a Canadian or European checkout. Taxes may appear only at the final step. Compare products with the same platform license, region and currency, and avoid combining a console pass price with PC DLC prices.

Sales, subscriptions and stacking rules
Use the price displayed when you are ready to buy. Record whether it is a regular price, a limited promotion or a member price. Subscription discounts may cover both passes and individual DLC, but stacking rules differ by storefront. If the checkout does not show the discount, do not count it in your calculation.
Ownership and access after a subscription ends
A subscription can provide access to a base game while you own the DLC separately, but the DLC’s playability may still depend on access to the base game. Verify what remains playable when a subscription lapses and whether the pass license is attached permanently to your account or to a subscription entitlement.

- Open the official store page for your platform and region. Confirm the game title, edition and account region before recording any price.
- Read the contents list. Write down every named expansion, wave, character pack or bonus. Separate released items from future items when the listing provides that information.
- Check the purchase rule. Look for wording such as “only available as part of the pass” or, conversely, a comparison with buying each item separately.
- Verify prerequisites. Confirm base-game ownership, edition compatibility and any subscription requirement. For the Forza Horizon 6 bundle, the cited requirement is the base game or an eligible Game Pass subscription.
- Open each individual DLC listing, if available. Record its current price in the same currency. Do not substitute a different platform or region.
- Apply eligible discounts once. If you qualify for a member discount such as EA Play’s 10%, verify the adjusted checkout amount and whether a sale already supplies a lower price.
- Calculate your personal total. Add only the items you would definitely buy. Keep optional items outside the guaranteed-saving figure.
- Check your existing purchases. If you already own a pack, determine whether the store credits it toward a pass. If no credit is shown, treat the already-paid amount as sunk cost and compare the remaining options without assuming a refund.
- Review delivery and refund terms. Confirm how future waves are delivered, whether pre-release content has a stated schedule, and whether digital purchases can be refunded in your region.
- Save the final comparison. A screenshot or receipt showing the price, discount and included content helps if the promotion ends before you complete checkout.
Common mistakes and how to avoid them
Using the advertised percentage instead of your own total
A bundle marked “20% off” or “reduced price” compares against a publisher-selected baseline. Your relevant baseline is the price of the DLC you will use. Recalculate with current individual listings.
Counting every future item as guaranteed value
Unreleased content carries timing and preference risk. Count it as certain only when you already know you want it and the listing clearly includes it. Otherwise, show two totals: a minimum based on released or definite items, and an optional total that includes speculative content.

Ignoring pass-only restrictions
Searching for an individual listing can waste time when the publisher has made the content pass-only. The Fire Emblem: Three Houses policy is unambiguous: the four waves are not sold separately.
Comparing different currencies or editions
Converting prices informally can hide taxes, regional pricing and edition differences. Keep the calculation inside one storefront whenever possible.
Forgetting that the pass may not include the base game
An expansion pass is generally an add-on, not a replacement for the game. The Forza Horizon 6 listing specifically says the base game or an eligible Game Pass subscription is required. Add any missing prerequisite to your total budget.
Assuming discounts stack
Membership savings, sale prices and bundle reductions may be mutually exclusive. Count only discounts displayed together in the final checkout.
A practical decision rule
Choose the expansion pass when three conditions are all true: its current checkout price is below the sum of the individual DLC you definitely want; its contents and delivery terms are acceptable; and you satisfy the base-game, platform and account requirements. Choose individual DLC when any of those conditions fails, provided the game allows separate purchases.
For a pass-only game, replace the price comparison with a completeness test: would you willingly pay the pass price for the entire required package? For a game with a temporary sale, run the calculation twice—once at today’s price and once at the regular price—so you know whether the decision depends entirely on the promotion. Recheck the official listing immediately before purchase because prices, discounts, release schedules and availability can change.
