Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →“ext-ms-win-gui-uxinit-l1-1-0.dll was not found” usually points to a damaged Windows component or a program that cannot load one of its Windows dependencies. The ext-ms-win-gui-uxinit-l1-1-0.dll file is a Windows API-set stub, not a normal application DLL or redistributable runtime.
Which fix applies to you
Use this order:
- Several programs or Windows features fail: Install Windows updates, then run DISM and SFC.
- Only one program or game fails: Repair, verify, update, or reinstall that program.
- The error began after antivirus activity: Check Windows Security Protection History.
- The problem began after an update or software installation: Try System Restore.
- The error persists after system repair: Check the application, Windows architecture, and the complete error message before attempting deeper recovery.
Do not download this DLL from a random DLL website. A copied file can have the wrong architecture, an incompatible build, or malicious modifications, and it may not fix the missing dependency that caused the message.

What ext-ms-win-gui-uxinit-l1-1-0.dll is
Microsoft documents names beginning with ext- as Windows API-set contracts. These names allow an application to request a Windows function while the loader resolves the actual implementation for that Windows release. See Microsoft’s Windows API sets documentation.
Recommended Free Tools
This means the file is not:
- A Visual C++ Redistributable library
- A DirectX runtime file
- A device-driver component
- A framework that you install separately
- A COM DLL that normally needs
regsvr32
The contract is associated with Windows user-experience initialization. A secondary API-set reference maps it to uxinit.dll, but the exact implementation and file layout can vary between Windows releases and system architectures.

Windows normally services this type of component. Depending on the Windows release and the process architecture, related system files may be resolved from %windir%System32 or through WOW64 redirection for 32-bit programs on 64-bit Windows. Do not use an old file from another Windows version as a replacement.
Fix 1: Install Windows updates
Windows Update is the safest first repair because it can replace or service Windows components without mixing files from different builds.
- Open Start.
- Select Settings.
- Choose Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install every available Windows update.
- Restart the computer, even if Windows does not immediately require it.
- Launch the affected program again.
If the error disappears, the missing or damaged Windows component has probably been repaired. If Windows Update reports an error or the DLL message remains, continue with DISM and SFC.

Fix 2: Run DISM, then SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker. DISM repairs the Windows component source that SFC uses to replace damaged protected files. The commands are documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click Command Prompt.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run this command:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait until DISM finishes. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Run SFC:
sfc /scannow
- Wait for the scan to reach 100 percent.
- Restart Windows and test the affected program.
A successful result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, or that it found corrupt files and repaired them. If SFC says it could not repair some files, restart and run DISM again, then repeat SFC. Also confirm that Windows Update is working, since DISM may need a repair source from Windows Update.
Repeating commands without knowing what changed can make this step difficult to track. Outbyte PC Repair can show a free scan of reported Windows problems, while repair is handled by the full version; it is optional, and Windows Update, DISM, and SFC remain the normal repair path.
Fix 3: Repair the affected application
If only one program produces the message, the application installation may be damaged even though the missing name belongs to a Windows API contract. A “module was not found” message can also mean that another dependency required during loading is absent or incompatible.
For a Microsoft Store or supported Windows application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Choose Installed apps.
- Find the affected application.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, if available.
- Start the application again.
If Repair does not help, select Reset only if you understand that it may remove the application’s local data. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the program from its official publisher, Microsoft Store listing, or legitimate game launcher.
For a desktop application:
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the application.
- Choose Uninstall, unless the application provides its own repair option.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the publisher or the application’s official launcher.
- Install it again and test it before adding unofficial DLL files.
If a game is affected, use the launcher’s official Verify, Repair, or Verify integrity of game files command. The menu name depends on the launcher, so use its built-in file verification rather than copying a DLL into the game folder.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software may quarantine a file after a detection, or malware may have damaged system files. Do not restore a file solely because its filename looks familiar.
- Open Start.
- Search for Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Open a detection to see its path, threat name, and action.
- Restore or allow it only if you can verify that it came from Windows or a trusted application repair process.
- Run a full scan afterward.
Microsoft warns that restoring a detected file can make it active again. If the detection is unclear, leave the item quarantined and repair Windows with Windows Update, DISM, and SFC instead. See Microsoft’s Protection History guidance.
Fix 5: Check 32-bit and 64-bit compatibility
Do not copy a 32-bit DLL into a 64-bit Windows system, or use an old Windows 8-era file as a universal replacement. On 64-bit Windows, System32 normally contains 64-bit system files, while 32-bit applications use WOW64 redirection and may resolve files through SysWOW64. Microsoft explains this behavior in its file-system redirector documentation.
To check your Windows architecture:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select System > About.
- Look at System type.
- Note the Windows edition and version as well.
To check the application architecture, consult its publisher’s documentation or installer. Do not attempt to solve an architecture mismatch by placing duplicate DLLs in the application folder. That can override normal Windows DLL resolution and create additional security or compatibility problems.
Fix 6: Update a related driver only when evidence points to one
This file is not normally a device-driver DLL. Device Manager is therefore not a general fix for this error. Use it only if the complete error, Event Viewer entry, or application documentation identifies a graphics, audio, display, or other driver failure.

Driver version hunting can involve checking many hardware models and matching the correct architecture. Outbyte Driver Updater provides a free scan showing reported driver issues, while driver installation is handled by the full version; use it only as an optional aid, not as a requirement for repairing this Windows API-set file.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Fix 7: Use System Restore
Use System Restore when the problem began after a Windows update, driver installation, cleanup utility, or application installation.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs, if available.
- Confirm the restore point.
- Select Finish and allow Windows to restart.
System Restore rolls back system files, registry settings, and installed programs. It normally does not remove personal documents, but review the affected-program list before proceeding. Microsoft describes the process in its System Restore guidance.
Fix 8: Repair-reinstall Windows
If Windows remains unstable after updates, DISM, SFC, and System Restore, use an in-place repair option before Reset or a clean installation.
On supported Windows 11 systems:
- Open Settings.
- Select System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update.
- Select Reinstall now.
- Follow the prompts.
Microsoft says this reinstalls the current Windows version while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option is not available on every installation. See Microsoft’s repair reinstall instructions.
Why Visual C++ and regsvr32 usually do not help
Install the Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable only when the application separately reports a missing Visual C++ runtime. The package supplies C and C++ runtime libraries and must match the application architecture. It is not a general repair package for Windows API-set files. Microsoft lists the supported packages in its Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
Do not run regsvr32 as a generic DLL repair command. It is intended for libraries that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer, not API-set stubs. Microsoft documents its purpose in the regsvr32 command reference.
Windows Features and Device Manager are also not general solutions unless the complete error identifies a missing Windows feature or a driver problem.

Is ext-ms-win-gui-uxinit-l1-1-0.dll legitimate?
Yes. Its ext- filename follows Microsoft’s documented API-set naming convention, and it is associated with Windows. Its presence and exact location can vary by Windows release and architecture.
Should I download the DLL?
No. Random DLL downloads can supply the wrong build, architecture, or a modified file. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, System Restore, or the affected program’s official installer.
What program causes this error?
There is no reliable list of one application or game that consistently triggers it. Record the complete error dialog, executable name, Windows version, and whether one program or several programs fail.
Does “module was not found” prove this exact file is missing?
No. Windows can show that message when a dependency required by the loading process is absent or incompatible. The named API-set file is not always the actual root cause.

Can I copy the file into the program folder?
Do not. Application-folder copies can override normal Windows DLL resolution and introduce version, architecture, or security problems.
What information should I collect if the error remains?
Run winver, note the Windows edition and build, record whether Windows is 32-bit or 64-bit, identify the failing executable, and save the full error text. Also note whether DISM, SFC, Windows Update, antivirus review, and application repair changed the behavior.
