Failbetter describes it as text-based and browser-playable, making it a low-cost way to sample the world. Its official page also advertises 4.5 million handcrafted words of story content; that is the developer’s published figure, not an independently audited word count.
Start with Sunless Sea for a distinct game loop
Choose Sunless Sea if the appeal is taking a ship into unfamiliar waters and balancing exploration with survival. You do not need to complete—or even play—Fallen London first. Failbetter’s creator FAQ says prior play is emphatically not necessary, while noting that knowing the universe can add to the experience.

Choose by format if you are undecided
If neither description settles it, use the format as your tiebreaker: begin with the free browser text adventure if you want to read and make choices; begin with the paid standalone game if you want to navigate and face survival pressure. Neither is the universally correct starting point.
