Xbox has the decisive capacity advantage
Xbox Series X|S is the clear choice for a large load order. Bethesda’s 2026 storage update raises expandable Creations storage on Xbox to a maximum of 100 GB. That gives you room for substantially more or larger installed creations before reaching the platform limit.

Individual creations can still conflict, require a particular load order, or behave poorly after a game update. The practical advantage is simply more space to keep the creations you want installed at the same time.

PS5 is suitable for a smaller, curated load order
PS5 has approximately 15 GB of Creations storage in Bethesda’s 2026 figures. That is enough for players who install a focused collection rather than trying to keep a very large catalogue active. You will need to manage space more deliberately: remove creations you are no longer using before adding a large package, and leave room for updates or replacements.
The smaller allowance does not change Fallout 4’s documented graphics modes. It only constrains how much Creations content can be installed concurrently.
The May 27, 2026 update changes Xbox load-order maintenance
Bethesda says the 2026 Xbox storage update clears installed Xbox Creations on the first launch after updating. You must redownload the creations or restore a saved load order. PS5 installations are preserved through the update.

How to protect an Xbox load order before updating
- Open Fallout 4’s Creations area while your existing Xbox installation is still intact.
- Use the game’s available load-order save or restore function before applying the update. If you cannot access that function, make a written or screenshot record of the enabled creations and their order.
- Note which creations are essential to each save. A saved load order is useful only if you can identify the content your save expects.
- Apply the update, launch the game once, and allow the Xbox installation to complete its reset.
- Restore the saved order or redownload the creations in a controlled sequence. Start the game with a minimal set first if you are troubleshooting a mod-heavy save.
Do not assume that a cloud-saved game automatically reconstructs every installed creation. The update notice concerns the installed Xbox Creations themselves, so keep a separate record of what your saves require.

How Fallout 4 performs on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S
Both consoles use the same documented mode targets
Bethesda defines Performance mode as a 60-FPS target at 4K. It uses standard settings and dynamic resolution scaling, which means the renderer can adjust resolution during demanding scenes in order to pursue the frame-rate target.
Quality mode targets 30 FPS at 4K with ultra settings and does not require dynamic resolution scaling. When the console is connected to a 120 Hz display, Quality mode targets 40 FPS. That intermediate target is conditional on the display refresh rate; a conventional 60 Hz television does not provide the same 40-FPS presentation.
These are targets, not a guarantee that every frame will arrive at a perfectly even interval. Scene complexity, streaming, and an unstable load order can still affect frame pacing.
Native applications matter more than backward compatibility
Both versions received native current-generation applications on April 25, 2024, with increased resolutions and support for frame rates up to 60 FPS. You are therefore comparing two current-generation builds rather than choosing between a native build and an older-generation compatibility layer.
On either console, choose Performance when responsiveness and a higher refresh rate matter more than maximum image settings. Choose Quality when ultra settings and a steadier cinematic presentation are more important. A 120 Hz display is required to use the documented 40-FPS Quality target.

Expect occasional hitching rather than a guaranteed perfectly smooth lock
Digital Foundry’s May 14, 2024 re-review examined PS5, Xbox Series X, and Xbox Series S after the next-generation patch. Its summary reported that intrusive hitching remained an issue. That finding is useful context for expectations: the mode labels describe Bethesda’s targets, but they do not establish that one console always delivers flawless frame pacing or that the other is universally worse.

Hitching should not be confused with a permanent frame-rate choice. If it appears after changing creations, first suspect the load order and game state before deciding that the console itself is at fault.
Which console has faster Fallout 4 load times?
There is no authoritative numerical winner
The available sources do not provide a controlled, current, game-specific table comparing PS5 with Xbox Series X or Xbox Series S. Without the same save, creation set, patch level, display setup, and timing method on both platforms, a number copied from an individual test cannot establish a general winner.
Both consoles run native Fallout 4 applications from SSD-based hardware, so loading is materially improved over last-generation systems. That is the defensible conclusion. Claims such as “PS5 always loads faster” or “Series X always wins” go beyond the published evidence.
Why mod-heavy saves can load differently
Creations can add scripts, assets, world changes, and dependencies that increase the work done when a save or area is opened. The result can be longer waits, instability, or a game that appears stuck after activating many creations. The effect depends on the particular load order, not only on the console model.

For that reason, a clean, lightly modded save is a better basis for comparing consoles than a heavily customized one. If your priority is a large load order, the Xbox storage advantage is measurable; a universal loading-time advantage is not.
Load-order stability and recovery
If Fallout 4 is stuck after enabling creations
- Wait through one complete launch attempt before changing several variables at once. Note whether the title hangs at startup, while loading a save, or when entering a specific area.
- Return to Creations and deactivate or remove the most recently added creations, especially several enabled in one session.
- Restart the game and test a save made before the problematic change, if one is available.
- If the console still cannot start the game, follow Bethesda’s advice to clear the installed mods or reinstall the game on the affected console.
- Rebuild the load order gradually, testing after each group instead of restoring every creation simultaneously.
Keep an unmodded or minimally modded save available. A save that depends on removed creations may continue to report missing content even after the game itself launches normally.
After the Xbox storage reset
On Xbox, first confirm that the creations your saves require are installed again. Restore the saved order before opening a heavily modded save, and test the title with a small subset if the first restored launch fails. The reset is an installation event; it does not prove that your save is corrupted.
On PS5, preserve the advantage of continuity
Because Bethesda says PS5 installations are preserved by the 2026 storage update, you should not need to rebuild an existing installation solely because of that update. Still, record your order before major changes. Preservation protects the installed files; it does not prevent two creations from conflicting after a new patch.
Xbox Series X versus Xbox Series S
Bethesda groups Xbox Series X and Series S together for the Creations storage allowance and the native application. The published mode definitions also describe the Xbox Series X|S platform together. The supplied performance evidence does not establish a consistent frame-pacing or loading winner between the two Xbox models.

Choose between them based on your broader console requirements, but do not buy Series X solely on the assumption that it receives a larger Fallout 4 Creations quota. The documented quota is a Series X|S platform feature. Likewise, do not assume Series S will load every modded save identically to Series X; no controlled comparison in the available evidence supports a model-specific promise.

Recommended setup practices
For an Xbox mod-focused installation
- Save the load order before the May 27, 2026 update and keep a separate list of creations required by each important save.
- After the update, restore the order in stages instead of immediately activating the entire catalogue.
- Leave enough free Creations capacity to replace or update packages; a full allowance makes experimentation harder even when the limit is high.
- When troubleshooting, change one group of creations at a time so you can identify a conflict.
For a PS5 installation
- Plan a compact load order because the available Creations allowance is limited compared with Xbox.
- Remove unused packages before installing a large new one.
- Keep a record of your order even though the 2026 update preserves installed content; future patches or manual changes can still create conflicts.
- Use the same staged-testing approach when a save begins hitching or fails to load.
For either console
- Use Performance mode when input response and a higher frame-rate target are your priority.
- Use Quality mode when ultra settings matter more, and connect a 120 Hz display if you want the documented 40-FPS target.
- Test a clean save before blaming a console for a loading problem in a heavily modded save.
- Do not treat a single timed loading screen as proof of a platform-wide speed advantage.
What the evidence does—and does not—show
The strongest measurable difference is Creations capacity: Xbox Series X|S provides a far larger allowance than PS5. The graphics comparison is comparatively even because Bethesda documents matching mode targets and both systems run native applications. The weakest comparison axis is loading speed; there is no reproducible, current benchmark that supports a numerical ranking.
Digital Foundry’s report of remaining hitching also argues against an overly simple “60 FPS means perfectly smooth” conclusion. Frame-rate targets, frame pacing, creation conflicts, and streaming behavior are separate concerns. Your experience can change when you add or remove creations even though the console’s selected mode has not changed.
Final verdict
Buy the Xbox Series X|S version when your Fallout 4 plan involves a large or frequently changing Creations load order. Its 2026 storage ceiling is the one clear platform advantage. Choose PS5 if your list is compact, you already own that version, or preserving an installed set through the 2026 update is more valuable than extra capacity. For performance, both consoles offer native applications and the same documented mode targets. For loading, expect SSD-era improvements on both, but do not pay a premium based on an unproven claim that either platform always loads Fallout 4 faster.
