Fallout 4’s romance system is an optional part of companion relationships: build affinity with a romanceable companion, complete their conversations, and choose flirt and romance dialogue when it appears. Who can you romance in Fallout 4?
The base game has seven romanceable companions. Their locations, related progression, and companion perks are useful to weigh alongside romance: a perk is tied to affinity, not to choosing a romantic relationship. Prima Games’ companion guide lists the roster and approval behavior.

Prima’s guide lists Codsworth, Deacon, Dogmeat, Strong, Nick Valentine, and X6-88 as not romanceable in the base game. Porter Gage is a separate option reported for the Nuka-World add-on; the sources here do not establish a reliable step-by-step route or its conditions, so treat him as add-on-specific rather than part of the base roster.
How to start and progress a romance
Affinity rises or falls as a companion reacts to your actions, dialogue, and quest decisions. Each companion has preferences; behavior that one approves of may not suit another. Consult the companion’s likes and dislikes in the Prima companion guide and take that character along when you want their approval to matter.

- Choose actions that match their preferences. Use their likes and dislikes as a guide; there is no single set of choices that works equally well for the entire roster.
- Respond when they want to talk. Higher affinity opens personal conversations. Choose flirt dialogue when offered, then continue to pursue the relationship in later conversations.
- Choose romance dialogue if you want the relationship. It is optional; gaining affinity and unlocking the companion perk do not require you to romance them.
Flirt and romance options can involve Charisma checks. The affinity page’s search snippet gives approximate thresholds, but the full page was not available for verification, so exact affinity values, check odds, and recovery after a failed check should not be treated as established here. A 2015 GosuNoob romance guide also identifies the seven base-game options and their locations.
Does player character gender matter?
The cited guides describe the listed base-game companions as romanceable regardless of the player character’s gender. The academic article “Fallout 4 and Queer Representation” likewise discusses romance opportunities as following affinity rather than a gender restriction. This is a gameplay rule; it should not be taken as a full account of how each companion’s sexuality is represented.

The same DiGRA article argues that the system makes relationships broadly available while giving companions limited agency to express sexuality independently of the player. That is the authors’ critical interpretation of the game, not a prerequisite for starting a romance.
What do romance and maximum affinity unlock?
Maximum affinity unlocks a companion’s unique perk. Romance is a separate, optional choice. For a romanced companion, sleeping in a bed with them nearby grants Lover’s Embrace, a temporary experience-point bonus, according to the Fallout Wiki’s affinity reference and the DiGRA article. The bonus is tied to sleeping near the partner; it is not the same reward as the companion perk.

Does Fallout 4 show explicit sex scenes?
The cited sources support relationship dialogue and gameplay rewards, but do not establish explicit sex scenes as a core feature of the romance system. Do not assume that choosing romance leads to an on-screen sex scene; the documented focus is affinity, conversations, relationship status, and the sleep-related XP bonus.
