Fallout 4’s official Pip-Boy app was real, free, and launched on November 5, 2015. It synchronized with the game on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC, letting an iOS, Android, or Windows mobile device display much of the character’s stats, inventory, map, radio, and holotape content.
However, “available now” is historical wording from Bethesda’s original announcement. Bethesda support pages now say the app is no longer available for new downloads, and a separate notice attributes its removal from Google Play to newer app requirements. That means the app is best understood today as a notable 2015 second-screen feature—not a current utility you can reliably download and pair with a modern Fallout 4 installation.

What the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy app did
The Pip-Boy app was an official companion application, not a standalone Fallout game and not merely a themed phone interface. When connected to an active Fallout 4 session, it reproduced many of the functions normally handled through the game’s in-game Pip-Boy.
Bethesda advertised access to:
- Character statistics
- Inventory information
- The world map
- Radio stations
- Holotape games
- Current game status while away from the television or monitor
The app also included Atomic Command, a playable holotape-style minigame. Its main appeal was immersion: instead of opening the Pip-Boy on the main screen, players could look down at a phone beside them—or mounted on their arm—and use it as a second display.

- Freedom and Liberty Do whatever you want in a massive open world with hundreds of locations, characters, and quests. Join multiple factions vying for power or go it alone, the choices are all yours
- Be whoever you want with the special character system. From a power Armored soldier to the charismatic smooth talker, you can choose from hundreds of perks and develop your own playstyle
- New next generation graphics and lighting engine brings to life the world of fallout. From the blasted forests of the common wealth to the ruins of Boston, every location is packed with dynamic detail
- Intense first or third person combat can also be slowed down with the new dynamic Vault Tec Assisted Targeting System (V.A.T.S) that lets you choose your attacks and enjoy cinematic carnage
Bethesda described the app as supporting almost all of the tasks available through Fallout 4’s Pip-Boy, but that did not mean it duplicated every screen or interaction. It was functional, yet deliberately incomplete.

What it supported—and what it left out
| Available through the app | Not fully available through the app |
|---|---|
| Stats | Perks chart |
| Inventory | Workshop mode |
| World map | Caravan Supply Lines screen |
| Radio | Weapon and item inspection |
| Holotape games, including Atomic Command | Some player-name and map-location details |
Bethesda’s support documentation specifically lists the Perks chart, Caravan Supply Lines, Workshop mode, and item inspection—including weapons and weapon modifications—as omissions. The Status tab did not show the player’s name, and the map interface did not show the location name in the same way as the game.
So the app could genuinely synchronize with Fallout 4 and provide useful information, but it was not a complete remote replacement for the in-game Pip-Boy.

How the historical connection worked
The intended setup was straightforward:
- Install the official Pip-Boy companion app on a compatible mobile device.
- Start Fallout 4 on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, or PC.
- Enable the game’s companion-app functionality.
- Launch the app and connect it to the active game session.
- Use the phone to view the supported Pip-Boy tabs and play its minigames.
The available official documentation confirms the synchronized second-screen concept, but it does not provide a complete current, platform-specific pairing guide. Menu names, network behavior, and compatibility should therefore not be assumed to work identically across modern versions of the game.
The launch announcement listed iOS, Android, and Windows mobile as mobile platforms, with Fallout 4 support on Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC. Those were 2015-era claims. They should not be read as a guarantee for current-generation console editions, cloud versions, every PC release, or current mobile operating systems.
Why the app sometimes became unusable
The app was not interactive at all times. In restricted situations, it entered View Mode or otherwise prevented input so that the second screen could not interfere with the game’s controls or scripted events.

Bethesda lists restrictions during or around:
- Pause menus and loading screens
- Dialogue cameras, scenes, and dialogue menus
- Workshop, workbench, trade, barter, and loot menus
- Favorites and VATS
- Holotape play and terminal use
- Lockpicking and sniper aiming
- Furniture and power-armor animations
- Waiting, sleeping, idle-camera sequences, and scripted animations
- Item inspection, books, and notes
- The ending video, death camera, and other control-locked situations
There was also an early-game limitation: the app could not be used until the player had left Vault 111. If the app appeared frozen or stopped accepting commands, that did not necessarily indicate a connection failure; the game may simply have entered one of these restricted states.

Did it require the Pip-Boy Edition?
No. The software and the physical Pip-Boy wearable were separate parts of the product. Bethesda distributed the app as a free companion application; the collector’s-edition replica was an optional phone holder designed to create the intended cosplay experience.
You could use the app without owning the Pip-Boy Edition. Conversely, owning the wearable does not guarantee that the app can still be downloaded or that it will pair with a current phone and game installation.

Bethesda also mentioned customizable foam inserts for some other phones, but warned that larger devices might not fit. This creates two separate compatibility questions:
- Software compatibility: Can the phone install and run the app?
- Physical compatibility: Can the phone actually fit inside the 2015 wearable?
A modern large-screen iPhone or Android phone may fail the second test even if an archived copy of the app could run. Anyone buying a secondhand Pip-Boy Edition should check the holder’s condition and dimensions rather than assuming it will accommodate a current phone.

In practical terms, readers should not treat the old “available now” headline as current news. The app may remain installed on some older devices, but Bethesda’s current support material does not provide a supported new-download path or establish compatibility with current mobile operating systems and modern Fallout 4 releases.
If you find an APK or archived installer on a third-party site, it is not an official replacement. Bethesda’s documentation does not guarantee that unofficial copies are safe, functional, or compatible with your game. Sideloaded software also introduces security and account risks, so it should not be presented as a normal solution.

There is no verified modern substitute that should be described as Bethesda’s synchronized Fallout 4 companion app. Options depend on what you actually want:
- For the original second-screen experience: An already-installed copy on compatible legacy hardware may be relevant, but current support is not established.
- For cosplay or display: A licensed standalone Pip-Boy replica can provide the look and dedicated hardware experience, but it should not be sold as a replacement for live Fallout 4 inventory or map synchronization. The Wand Company’s Fallout Pip-Boy press material describes a licensed replica with Atomic Command.
- For a themed phone interface: The unofficial App Store app Pip-Toy offers features such as a compass, maps, stats, flashlight, and cosplay mode. It does not synchronize with Fallout 4 and is not Bethesda’s official app.
- For the physical holder: A secondhand Pip-Boy Edition may work as a collector or cosplay accessory, but verify that the wearable is complete and check phone fit before buying. Do not assume it includes a usable game code or proves that the official app remains available.
The verdict
As a 2015 feature, the Fallout 4 Pip-Boy app was a clever and genuinely functional second screen. It let players move common Pip-Boy information onto a phone, added Atomic Command, and made the collector’s-edition wearable more than a static prop.
Its limitations mattered: it omitted several important screens, became restricted during many gameplay situations, and was tied to an older platform and phone ecosystem. In 2026, Bethesda’s support pages indicate that it is no longer officially available to new users. The Pip-Boy Edition remains appealing for collectors and cosplayers, but it should not be purchased on the assumption that a modern phone will fit or that the original synchronized app can still be downloaded.
