Aggro tries to win through early pressure and damage; fast combo tries to assemble and resolve a decisive sequence of cards. Both strategies race to finish before the opponent’s plan takes over, but they race toward different goals—and neither archetype has a guaranteed speed or fixed set of cards.
What’s the difference between combo and aggro?
Aggro is built to make the opponent’s life total fall quickly, usually with creatures and attacks. Its clock is the pressure it can maintain before the opponent stabilizes. Wizards describes aggro as trying to reduce an opponent from 20 life to 0 mostly by attacking, though that is a broad archetype description rather than a promise about how any particular game unfolds. Wizards’ aggro strategy guide also emphasizes ending the game before the opponent’s plan gets out of control.
Combo is built around assembling a group of cards that produces a powerful effect, usually a win condition. Wizards defines it as a kind of synergy strategy, while cautioning that there are no hard-and-fast rules for deciding which synergistic decks count as combo. Wizards’ combo design article explains the idea in terms of bringing the necessary pieces together for a powerful effect.
“Fast” describes the intended pace of a combo deck, not a universal turn number. A combo deck must find and execute its sequence; an aggro deck must turn its early pressure into lethal damage. Which clock is faster depends on the format, the cards, and what each player can do in response.

How the two game plans compare
| Question | Fast combo | Aggro |
|---|---|---|
| What advances the win? | Finding and assembling the cards for a decisive effect. Wizards’ combo design article | Applying early pressure, commonly with creatures and attacks, to reduce the opponent’s life total. Wizards’ aggro strategy guide |
| What is the deck racing? | Completing and resolving its combination. | Dealing enough damage before the opponent stabilizes or a longer game takes over. |
| Where can it lose momentum? | A needed piece may not arrive, or the sequence may be disrupted. These are strategic consequences of relying on assembly, not rules that apply identically to every combo deck. | Threats may be blocked or removed, pressure may be slowed, or the opponent may gain life. Wizards also points to consistent mana as important for keeping an aggro plan on schedule. |
| What can the opponent do? | Use available interaction to disrupt a piece or respond to a spell or ability before it resolves. | Survive the early assault with defenses such as blockers, removal, or life gain; which options work depends on the decks and format. |
How interaction changes the race
A matchup is not always a contest of raw speed. If an aggro deck cannot interact with a fast combo deck, the game can become a race in which each side focuses on its own clock. But combo decks can also use defensive cards to buy time against attackers, and aggro decks may have disruption alongside their threats. These are possible deck-building choices, not defining requirements of either archetype.
Magic’s rules create windows to act and respond. A turn has five phases: beginning, precombat main, combat, postcombat main, and ending. Spells and abilities use priority and the stack; players can respond before an item on the stack resolves. The exact opportunity depends on the cards and timing involved, so understanding an opponent’s sequence matters as much as knowing its headline win condition. See the current Magic: The Gathering Comprehensive Rules for the rules governing priority, the stack, and turn structure.

Why the archetypes are not rigid boxes
“Aggro” does not mean every deck must win only with creatures, and “combo” does not mean every deck wins the same way or has a universally agreed boundary. A deck can pressure life totals while also disrupting an opponent; another can use synergy without being classified as combo. The useful distinction is the primary route to victory: sustained early pressure for aggro, or assembling a powerful sequence for combo.
Wizards has also described a design guideline that combo decks should not be faster than the fastest aggro deck in a format. That is a game-design principle, not a rule of Magic and not a prediction that determines the outcome of every matchup. Wizards’ combo design article discusses the guideline in that context.
