Use the PC version if 60-fps gameplay is your priority. Steam offers 60-fps and 30-fps gameplay choices, while the publisher lists 30 fps for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2. Cutscenes are capped at 30 fps on every platform. Start PC tuning with the hardware-matched official preset, then adjust only after checking the same scene for smoothness, ghost detail, viewfinder clarity and subtitle readability. On consoles, focus on Camera Obscura layout, inversion, accessibility and display settings rather than searching for a hidden performance mode.
This guide covers settings in the March 12, 2026 remake, not options inherited from the original release. The publisher notes that listed resolutions are maximum upscaled outputs, can temporarily decrease, and may be accompanied by temporary frame-rate drops. KOEI TECMO America confirmed the remake’s launch platforms.

Can Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake run at 60 fps?
Only the Steam version lists a 60-fps gameplay choice. The publisher’s platform specification lists 30 fps for PS5, PS5 Pro, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2, with no console performance mode. A PC capable of selecting 60 fps is not guaranteed to sustain it in every scene, and the game’s cutscenes remain capped at 30 fps.
“Frame rate is capped at 30fps during cutscenes, and may temporarily drop depending on gameplay conditions.” — KOEI TECMO America

Do not interpret a console’s resolution number or the PS5 Pro Enhanced label as evidence of a 60-fps mode. The official figures describe maximum upscaled output, not guaranteed native rendering or constant output. The same distinction matters on PC: a listed maximum output or a 60-fps menu choice is not proof that every scene will render at that resolution or frame rate without dips.
What are the platform graphics and control differences?
The table below uses the publisher’s current specification. “Maximum output” means the highest upscaled output listed for that platform; it is not a measurement of internal rendering resolution.
| Platform | Gameplay frame rate | Maximum listed output | Camera Obscura interface | Gyroscope |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Steam (PC) | 60 fps or 30 fps choice | Up to 2160p on maximum tier | Default or Classic | Not listed |
| PS5 / PS5 Pro | 30 fps | Up to 2160p | Default or Classic | Not listed |
| Xbox Series X | 30 fps | Up to 2160p | Default or Classic | Not listed |
| Xbox Series S | 30 fps | Up to 1440p | Default or Classic | Not listed |
| Nintendo Switch 2 | 30 fps | Up to 1080p in TV, tabletop and handheld modes | Classic only | Camera Obscura motion sensor support listed |
See the official platform specifications for the complete table and its temporary-drop caveat. Switch 2 is the only platform for which the publisher lists Camera Obscura motion-sensor or gyroscope support.
For a quick platform decision, separate the question of image output from the question of motion. The PC maximum tier lists output up to 2160p, while the recommended PC tier lists 1080p and the minimum tier 720p. PS5 and PS5 Pro are listed up to 2160p; Xbox Series X up to 2160p and Series S up to 1440p; Switch 2 up to 1080p in TV, tabletop and handheld modes. Those figures are maximum upscaled outputs, and the publisher warns that resolution may temporarily decrease. All listed console modes remain 30 fps. If motion aiming is important, Switch 2 is the only platform with Camera Obscura gyro support in the official table; if a choice between Default and Classic matters, Switch 2 lists Classic only while Steam, PlayStation and Xbox list both.
Which PC preset should I start with?
Choose the official tier that most closely matches your computer before changing individual options. These are publisher targets, not independent benchmarks or promises that equivalent hardware will hold a given frame rate.
Minimum-tier starting point
- Target: 1280×720 at 30 fps.
- Preset: Best Performance.
- Memory: 16 GB RAM.
- Operating system: Windows 11 64-bit.
- Storage: SSD.
- Viewfinder style: Classic.
- Cutscene outfit: Default.
The publisher’s minimum GPU line contains inconsistent product naming, so treat it as a tier description rather than a shopping recommendation. Do not buy hardware based on that ambiguous line alone.
Recommended Free Tools
Recommended-tier starting point
- Target: 1920×1080 at 30 fps.
- Preset: Standard.
- Memory: 16 GB RAM.
- Operating system: Windows 11 64-bit.
- Storage: SSD.
- Viewfinder style: Default.
- Cutscene outfit: Current.
- Example graphics cards: GeForce RTX 2060 6 GB or Radeon RX 5700 XT 8 GB.
- Example processors: Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 5 3600XT.
These targets and examples come from the publisher’s PC specifications. They do not establish a universal 60-fps recipe.
Think of the two tiers as starting configurations, not a promise about how every computer with similar parts will behave. Both list 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 64-bit and an SSD, but the recommended tier’s specified target is still 30 fps at 1920×1080. If your goal is 60-fps gameplay, treat that as a local test after you have confirmed that the game is smooth at a supported starting point. A specification for a 30-fps target does not guarantee 60 fps just because you have a processor or graphics card near one of the examples.
The viewfinder style and cutscene outfit appear alongside the graphics-tier targets, but they are separate choices from a frame-rate guarantee. The minimum tier pairs Classic viewfinder style with the default cutscene outfit; the recommended tier pairs Default viewfinder style with the current outfit. Choose the UI style for legibility and familiarity rather than assuming one is a performance upgrade. The publisher does not provide a measured performance comparison for the outfit choices.

How should I tune PC settings for smoother gameplay?
The safest approach is incremental: begin with the matching preset, select 60 fps only if your particular PC remains smooth, and compare the same scene after each change. No official per-toggle performance matrix establishes which effect gives the largest frame-rate increase.
- Match the preset. Use Best Performance for a minimum-tier system or Standard for the recommended tier.
- Choose the frame-rate target. On Steam, try 60 fps when camera movement and combat remain consistently fluid. If frame pacing is unstable, select 30 fps rather than chasing a fluctuating 60.
- Check a repeatable scene. Look at a dark room, a ghost silhouette, the Camera Obscura viewfinder and subtitles. These reveal blur, shimmer and readability problems better than a bright open area.
- Lower demanding visuals one step at a time. Recheck the same scene after each change and stop when clarity or ghost detail becomes unacceptable.
- Keep a stable compromise. A locked-feeling 30 fps is preferable to frequent drops if your computer cannot hold the selected target.
This is an editorial testing routine, not a benchmark recipe. Keep the camera movement, scene and display conditions as similar as you can between checks so you can tell whether a change actually helped. If you change several graphics options at once, it becomes harder to identify which adjustment affected smoothness or image quality. Do not expect a specific percentage gain from disabling an effect: the publisher does not publish a per-setting frame-rate matrix or a universal ranking of costly options.
During the comparison, look for more than a frame-rate number. This is a horror game where a dark silhouette, a usable viewfinder and readable subtitles can matter more to your experience than a marginally cleaner frame counter. If lowering a visual option makes a ghost harder to pick out or the image difficult to parse, restore it and try another adjustment. The purpose is a stable, readable compromise on your own hardware, not the lowest possible graphics setting.
What does Model LOD change?
On Steam, setting Model LOD to Low or below automatically changes Model Quality to Light. That is a linked quality trade-off, not a free performance switch. Avoid lowering LOD if preserving character appearance or the selected cutscene outfit matters to you. The publisher’s platform table distinguishes Standard and Light model quality by device. Check the current platform table before changing these options.
In practical terms, do not evaluate the LOD control as though it changes just one isolated item: the linked Model Quality adjustment means appearance changes along with it. If you try Low LOD, inspect character models in the same scene and decide whether that visual trade-off is acceptable before keeping it. The official information identifies the connection but does not say how many frames it saves, so avoid treating it as a guaranteed way to reach 60 fps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsShould I use Default or Classic Camera Obscura controls?
Use Default if you prefer the remake’s contemporary interface; use Classic if you know the original-style viewfinder or find its information layout easier to read. Steam, PS5 and Xbox provide both choices, while Switch 2 lists Classic only.
The Camera Obscura is used for exploration as well as fighting spirits. PlayStation describes Focus, Zoom and Filter Switching as part of those functions, so evaluate the interface while walking and while aiming through the viewfinder, not only in a menu. Sony’s feature listing explains the camera’s exploration and combat role.
A useful preference test is to spend a little time with both layouts on a platform that offers both, then compare whether you can read the viewfinder information while tracking a spirit. The best choice is the one you can interpret quickly without losing the target. This is an interface preference, not a claim that one layout improves damage or performance. On Switch 2 there is no Default-versus-Classic test to make according to the publisher’s table: Classic is the listed option.
Does Switch 2 support gyro aiming?
Yes, the publisher lists Camera Obscura motion-sensor or gyroscope support for Switch 2. It does not list that support for Steam, PS5 or Xbox, so do not assume a comparable gyro option exists elsewhere.

If you use the Switch 2 motion-sensor option, test it while exploring and while framing a shot rather than judging it only from a menu. Keep any movement small enough that you can still track what is on screen, and return to the standard control approach if motion aiming makes framing less comfortable. The platform specification confirms support, but does not establish a universal sensitivity value or prescribe a particular gyro setup.
How do I set sensitivity and inversion without a universal number?
No sourced game-specific sensitivity value is universal. Start with the default, change sensitivity in small increments, and test tracking on both a moving target and a slow environmental scan. Set vertical or horizontal inversion according to the direction your hand expects; if aiming becomes less controllable, reset and change only one axis at a time.
- Move the camera while exploring without the viewfinder.
- Enter the viewfinder and track a ghost at close and medium distance.
- Adjust one sensitivity axis by one step.
- Repeat the same movement and retain the change only if tracking feels easier.
- Set inversion separately for the axis that feels backward to you.
Do not infer button bindings from another platform. The available controls and options can differ by system.
Because the Camera Obscura participates in both exploration and combat, check your choice in both contexts. A setting that feels quick while turning in a room may feel too twitchy while keeping a ghost in frame; a slower setting may offer more control but feel cumbersome while exploring. The goal is not a particular number but controllable tracking. Make one small adjustment, repeat the same movement, and revert it if you have to fight the camera more than before.

Which PS5 accessibility settings are worth enabling?
PS5’s listing documents comfort and readability options that can be selected according to your needs, not as competitive advantages.
- Basic controller remapping and stick-inversion options. The listing allows alternate presets or some remapping support; it does not promise unrestricted per-button reassignment.
- Play without motion controls, controller vibration or adaptive-trigger effects.
- Clear or large text, subtitles and captions.
- Individual volume controls, mono audio and 3D audio.
- An easier preset difficulty.
Because this accessibility list is documented specifically for PS5, do not project every item onto Steam, Xbox or Switch 2 without a platform-specific listing.
These options address different needs: use larger or clearer text and subtitles if on-screen reading is difficult, and adjust individual volume or choose mono or 3D audio to suit your listening setup. You can also play without motion controls, vibration or adaptive-trigger effects if those features are uncomfortable. The easier preset difficulty is available for players who want a less demanding experience. None of these choices is required for image quality or frame rate, and Sony’s listing should not be read as proof that every other platform has the same menu.
Why do motion blur or camera axes feel wrong?
Update the game before diagnosing either issue. A March 27, 2026 patch fixed two separate problems: the normal Motion Blur setting could be affected by the Camera Obscura Motion Blur setting, and a Photo Mode camera-axis setting could be applied to the wrong Options axis.
The patch note states: “Fixed an issue where the Motion Blur (Camera Obscura) settings were also applied to the normal Motion Blur setting.” Old reports are therefore not reliable evidence of current behavior unless they identify the game build. Read the publisher’s update notes, then verify both blur controls and both camera-axis menus after updating.

If blur appears to return after you change only one blur menu, check the normal and Camera Obscura controls separately on the updated build. If inversion seems inconsistent, distinguish the Photo Mode camera-axis control from the Options camera-axis control; the March fix specifically addressed an axis setting being applied to the wrong Options axis. These fixes explain why older advice may not match current behavior, but they do not establish that every blur or aiming complaint has the same cause.
What is the current listed build?
The publisher’s June 22, 2026 update page lists version 1.04.00 for PS5, Xbox, Steam and Switch 2. Record your platform and version when troubleshooting so you can distinguish an old report from a current issue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should HDR be enabled?
Treat HDR as device-, platform- and version-dependent. An April 14 update fixed black-and-white effects during HDR cutscenes on PS5, Xbox and Steam, but the platform specification still uses future-update wording for HDR availability on compatible devices and lists Switch 2 as unsupported.

- Open the current in-game display options and verify whether an HDR toggle is actually present.
- Check a normal scene and a cutscene for raised blacks, clipped highlights or the previously reported monochrome effect.
- If the option is absent or the image is worse, use SDR rather than forcing an external HDR mode.
Do not issue a universal “HDR on” instruction while the official documents retain those platform and version qualifications. The platform specification and update history are the authoritative places to check for changes.
The April 14 patch note and the platform specification describe different pieces of the situation: the patch says a particular HDR cutscene effect was fixed on PS5, Xbox and Steam, while the specification retains future-update language for HDR support on compatible devices. That is not enough to promise universal HDR availability or to recommend forcing a display mode when the game does not expose the setting. Check the current menu and judge a normal scene as well as a cutscene on your own display. Switch 2 is listed as unsupported for HDR in the platform specification.
Do I need to buy anything to use these settings?
No new GPU, controller or HDR display is necessary simply to change the settings described here. Use the hardware you have and compare the result against the publisher’s PC starting tiers. If a PC falls short of the published target, lower settings gradually and test; the specifications do not establish that buying a particular component is required or that a hardware upgrade guarantees 60 fps.
For players still choosing a platform, KOEI TECMO America lists physical Standard Editions for PS5, Nintendo Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S, and says the Steam release is digital-only. The Switch 2 physical edition is a game-key card, not a conventional complete-game cartridge. The publisher links to US retailers including Amazon, Target, Walmart, Best Buy and GameStop. No prices or stock levels are included here, so check the retailer listing for current cost and availability. Edition format does not change the settings guidance above.

What settings should I choose first?
For a recommended-tier PC, begin with Standard at 1080p/30, Default viewfinder, current cutscene outfit and an SSD; test 60 fps afterward. For a lower-spec PC, begin with Best Performance at 720p/30, Classic viewfinder and the default cutscene outfit. On consoles, keep the listed 30-fps output, choose Default or Classic by legibility, and use the platform’s documented comfort options. Switch 2 owners can test the listed gyro control.
These choices are starting points grounded in the publisher’s specifications, not measured guarantees. The remake can temporarily lower output resolution or frame rate depending on conditions, so judge the result in your own display setup.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do PS5 Pro owners get a 60-fps mode in the remake?
No. The publisher’s specification lists PS5 Pro with a 30-fps gameplay configuration. PS5 Pro Enhanced identifies platform enhancement but does not replace that frame-rate listing.
Can I use the Classic Camera Obscura interface on Switch 2?
Yes. Classic is the interface listed for Switch 2. Default and Classic are both listed on Steam, PS5 and Xbox, but Default is not listed for Switch 2.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Will lowering resolution guarantee a higher frame rate on PC?
No. The available specifications do not provide a per-setting performance matrix or a guaranteed gain from any single toggle. Lower resolution may help a particular system, but you must compare the same scene and retain the setting only if smoothness improves without unacceptable loss of clarity.
Why are cutscenes still 30 fps when Steam gameplay is set to 60?
The publisher caps cutscenes at 30 fps independently of the Steam gameplay choice. Selecting 60 fps affects eligible gameplay rendering, not the cutscene cap.
Is a new GPU, controller or HDR television required for these settings?
No purchase is required to change the documented options. Use the official hardware tiers as compatibility guidance, then adjust existing display, control and graphics settings according to the behavior of your system.
Does Switch 2 support Camera Obscura gyro controls?
Yes. The publisher lists Camera Obscura motion-sensor or gyroscope support for Switch 2 alone; it does not list that support for Steam, PS5 or Xbox.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Why did changing Camera Obscura motion blur affect normal motion blur?
A March 27, 2026 patch fixed an issue where Camera Obscura motion-blur settings also affected normal motion blur. Update the game and check both options separately.
Is HDR definitely available on every platform?
No. The publisher’s specification retains future-update wording for HDR on compatible devices and lists Switch 2 as unsupported, while an April 14 update fixed a cutscene effect on PS5, Xbox and Steam. Check the current in-game option and platform notes.
What are the publisher’s minimum PC starting requirements?
The minimum-tier target is 1280×720 at 30 fps with Best Performance, 16 GB RAM, Windows 11 64-bit, an SSD, Classic viewfinder style and the default cutscene outfit. The publisher’s minimum GPU product name is inconsistent, so do not use that line alone as a buying recommendation.
Is the Switch 2 physical edition a standard cartridge?
No. The publisher identifies it as a game-key card. Steam is digital-only, while physical Standard Editions are listed for PS5, Switch 2 and Xbox Series X|S.
The Bottom Line
Best starting point: use the official PC tier that matches your system, then test 60-fps gameplay only if it stays smooth; consoles are listed at 30 fps and cutscenes are capped at 30 fps everywhere. Choose Camera Obscura layout and sensitivity for legibility and control, take advantage of Switch 2 gyro if useful, update before troubleshooting blur or camera axes, and verify HDR in the current game menu rather than assuming it is universally available.
