To damage a normal wraith in Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly Remake, raise the in-game Camera Obscura, keep the ghost inside the target circle until it is in focus, line up as many illuminated red focal points as possible, and shoot. A head-on angle and clear focus produce a stronger photograph. When the filament flashes violently in the center as the ghost attacks, press the shutter for a Fatal Frame; taking that Fatal Frame during a damage-triggered Shutter Chance starts Fatal Time, letting you fire repeatedly without consuming film. The same camera also handles specters, revenants, Twin Dolls and environmental puzzles, each with different capture conditions.
This guide covers the remake’s rules and controls, not a real camera and not necessarily the original release’s mechanics.

The Camera Obscura is both your weapon and your principal ghost-investigation tool. Its view gives immediate feedback about target direction, focus, alignment, damage and special opportunities. A normal photograph damages an ordinary hostile wraith; simply raising the camera is not enough, because the target must be framed and focused before the shot has its best effect.
- Raise the camera and find the subject. On Steam’s default keyboard and mouse layout, right-click raises or lowers the camera. The filament points toward a subject: red identifies a hostile wraith, blue identifies a specter, and other colors can appear for special subjects. Console button layouts differ, so follow the button guide shown for your selected Modern or Classic layout.
- Make the target circle clear. A faint or cloudy circle means the wraith is not properly focused. Hold the ghost in view until the circle becomes distinct. An additional frame around the target indicates that you are looking at it head-on. If the circle remains faint, moving closer, changing your angle or waiting for the ghost to enter a clearer position is more useful than firing immediately.
- Read the damage preview. The pink section of the targeted wraith’s HP gauge shows the damage your current photograph is expected to inflict. Treat it as a positioning aid: improve your angle, focus and focal-point coverage before pressing the shutter. If the pink preview grows as you reposition, the camera is showing that the new framing will be more effective.
- Frame illuminated focal points. Red focal points light up on a target. A shot that includes more of them, while remaining focused and head-on, inflicts more damage. Auto-focus is available immediately; manual focus and zoom are camera upgrades rather than starting abilities. Do not assume that a close-up alone guarantees maximum damage: the illuminated points and the head-on indicator still matter.
- Choose a film type and shoot. Film types have different reload times and attack power. On Steam, press Q or E to change film, and left-click to take the photograph. The camera must finish reloading before another ordinary shot can be taken. Plan the next shot while the reload animation runs instead of lowering the camera and losing the target.

These are the default Steam bindings. You can remap them under Options → Basic Settings → Control Settings. Console versions provide on-screen button prompts for their selected control scheme. The Modern and Classic layouts are not interchangeable with the Steam keyboard commands, so use the prompt displayed by your platform rather than assuming that a mouse action has a controller equivalent.
The lock-on command can help keep a moving wraith centered while you prepare a shot, but it does not replace the requirements for focus, focal points or a head-on angle. Zoom and manual focus also have separate upgrade requirements; the initial Camera Obscura does not expose every operation.

A Fatal Frame is a precisely timed photograph taken as a hostile wraith commits to an attack. Keep the ghost in view and watch the center of the filament. When that center flashes violently, press the shutter immediately. A successful Fatal Frame staggers the attacker and creates a much stronger opening than an ordinary photograph. The cue is the central flash, not merely a wraith moving toward you or the filament changing color.
Do not confuse this timing cue with Shutter Chance. Fatal Frame is tied to the incoming attack animation; Shutter Chance is a temporary state caused by dealing enough accumulated damage. The two can overlap, and that overlap is the key to the game’s most efficient damage sequence. If you fire too early, you may get an ordinary photograph; if you wait past the flash, the attack can connect before the stagger begins.
How do I trigger Fatal Time?
First deal enough damage to put the wraith into Shutter Chance. The opportunity lasts only briefly and ends after one shot or after the short timer expires. If the ghost begins an attack during that window, wait for the central filament flash and take a Fatal Frame. The combination opens Fatal Time.
During Fatal Time you can fire successive photographs without consuming film. The official manual also states that film type does not change reload time or attack power while Fatal Time is active, so choose your normal film for the encounter rather than trying to switch mid-sequence. This does not make every filter free: a Radiant charged Purge remains a Special Shot with its own film requirement, while Fatal Time’s film-free rule applies to the repeated photograph sequence described by the manual.
If a wraith becomes aggravated, it recovers HP and attacks more often and more forcefully. A damaged enemy therefore is not necessarily on a one-way path to defeat. Keep looking for focused, head-on photographs and another damage threshold rather than assuming that a recovered HP bar means the encounter has reset completely. Sufficient damage can trigger Fatal Time again.

Which Camera Obscura filters should I use?
There is no single universally best filter. Select one by range, control effect, resource cost and whether you need a finisher or crowd control. Filter shots generally do not deal damage; they provide the listed utility. Except for Radiant’s charged attack, filter shots do not consume film and can be used while the camera is reloading.

Use Paraceptual from a distance when approaching a dangerous target is undesirable. Its long-range advantage also matters outside combat, where it can reveal paths and guide you toward a missing subject. Exposure’s short reload and Slow effect are useful when you need another timing window against a fast-moving wraith. Standard is the practical option when you want to push an enemy away and recover Willpower as you shoot.
Save Radiant for a high-damage finish or a seal that specifically requires a fully charged Purge. Radiant cannot fire while reloading, and an uncharged attempt does not substitute for the fully charged shot required by bloody-handprint seals. These distinctions make Radiant a deliberate finisher rather than a filter to leave active for every encounter. How do Special Shots help when a wraith will not stay framed?
A Special Shot spends Willpower but can create space or impose a control effect, allowing you to reset your aim instead of wasting ordinary photographs against a rapidly moving target. Standard’s Suppress pushes a wraith away, Paraceptual’s Blind removes its sight temporarily, and Exposure’s Slow reduces its movement speed. Radiant’s charged Purge is a damage-focused exception and consumes film.
Use the control effect first, then raise the camera again and wait for a clear circle and illuminated focal points. Repeated ordinary shots taken while the target is out of focus are poor substitutes for one controlled, well-framed photograph.
Which upgrades should I buy first?
Spend Prayer Beads in the Camera Obscura menu. The upgrade manual recommends improving Focal Points first because clearer or more readily usable focal points make damage shots easier to line up. Choose Focus next if you want manual adjustment to move faster than auto-focus. This order favors reliable damage feedback before specialized handling speed, but Reversion Beads let you change the arrangement later.

The costs above are the first upgrade prices, not a recurring fee. The upgrade manual was updated April 1, 2026. Reversion Beads reset upgrades and return the items you spent, allowing a different build later. Zoom and manual focus remain unavailable until their respective unlocks; owning the camera does not grant every function at the start.
Because the damage preview, target circle and focal points all appear in the camera view, upgrades should be judged by how much easier they make those three checks. Do not buy an upgrade expecting it to alter Fatal Frame timing or make Kusabi vulnerable; neither follows from the listed upgrade effects.
How do I capture ghosts while exploring?
Not every apparition is a combat target. Exploration subjects have their own timing and equipment requirements, and successful photographs are recorded in the Spirit List under Files. The normal hostile-wraith routine—focus, line up focal points and shoot for damage—does not automatically work for every entry.
Specters
Specters appear for a short time and disappear. Raise the camera as soon as the blue filament identifies one, frame it and shoot before it vanishes. The publisher’s instruction is explicit: “Specters will not linger long, so be sure to photograph them before they vanish.” Successful named photographs add entries and earn Photo Points. A specter is an exploration capture, not a normal HP-based enemy, so prioritize speed and framing over trying to build damage.
Revenants
Revenants are normally invisible. After you obtain the Exposure Filter, photograph the location where one is present; the filter makes the capture possible and can reward an item. Do not expect a visible combat-style target before using the required filter. If a location appears empty, check that Exposure is selected and that the filter has been obtained through progression rather than assuming the capture has failed.
Twin Dolls
Both dolls must be inside the same frame. If one doll is missing, switch to the Paraceptual Filter and take a photograph; the resulting crimson-butterfly trail points toward the missing doll. Follow that indication, then return to a position where both can be framed together for the actual Twin Dolls capture. Photographing only one doll does not satisfy the two-doll condition.
Vanishing Traces and environmental subjects
- Paraceptual reveals paths associated with Vanishing Traces.
- Exposure, together with a key Photo and Phantom Exposé, restores things that have vanished.
- A fully charged Radiant Purge opens seals marked by bloody handprints.
- Zoom helps with subjects that are otherwise out of reach, once zoom has been unlocked.
These functions unlock during progression; the filters and abilities are not all available from the opening moments. The Spirit List under Files records photographed wraiths, specters, revenants and dolls, making it the place to verify whether an exploration capture counted.

Why are my camera shots weak?
A weak photograph usually reflects the indicators the Camera Obscura is already showing rather than a hidden damage penalty. Check these causes in order:

- Few illuminated focal points: reposition until more red points are lit inside the frame.
- Oblique angle: move toward a head-on view; the extra frame indicates better alignment.
- Reloading: wait for the selected film to finish its reload cycle, or use a non-Radiant filter shot while reloading.
- Wrong range: use Paraceptual to work at long range, or create distance with a Special Shot before returning to ordinary photographs.
- Uncharged Radiant shot: Purge requires a full charge and uses film; it also cannot fire during reload.
- Missed Fatal Frame: if the center filament flash passed before you pressed the shutter, the result is not the attack-staggering timing window.
- Target is not a normal wraith: specters, revenants and dolls have different capture rules, while Kusabi is an explicit exception.
Use the pink HP preview as a live diagnostic. If it improves when you turn toward the wraith’s front or include another illuminated point, keep adjusting. If it does not appear at all, verify that the camera is aimed at a recognized hostile target rather than an environmental subject. The camera’s combat view is separate from Photo Mode, which is a screenshot feature. Entering Photo Mode does not damage a wraith or count as a Spirit List capture.

No. KOEI TECMO GAMES specifically states that the Camera Obscura has no effect on Kusabi. Do not spend film or Willpower trying to force ordinary camera damage against that named exception. Other hostile wraiths follow the focus, focal-point and timing rules above, while exploration apparitions require their own filters or framing conditions.
Where can I play the remake?
Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake launched March 12, 2026. KOEI TECMO America’s release page lists standard physical editions for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch 2, while the Steam edition is digital-only. The Switch 2 release is identified as a game-key card, so check the packaging and console requirements before buying. These edition details come from the publisher’s US release page.
If you are looking for a physical copy, the clearest platform-specific search wording is “Fatal Frame II Crimson Butterfly Remake PS5 physical”; use the equivalent Xbox Series X|S or Switch 2 wording for those systems. Retail listings and stock can change, so confirm the platform and whether the Switch 2 package is a game-key card before checkout.
You do not need a real camera, photographic film, repair utility or streaming subscription to capture ghosts; all photography described here is performed with the in-game Camera Obscura.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing film during Fatal Time matter?
No. The official manual says film type does not alter reload time or attack power while Fatal Time is active, so changing film is unnecessary during that window. Outside Fatal Time, film types retain their different reload and attack characteristics.

How can I tell whether a ghost is hostile or a specter?
The filament color is the immediate clue in the camera view: red indicates a hostile wraith and blue indicates a specter. Other filter-specific colors can identify special exploration subjects, so the color should be read together with the situation rather than treated as a damage guarantee.
Are console controls identical to the Steam keyboard layout?
No. Steam’s defaults use mouse and keyboard bindings, while console versions provide Modern and Classic controller layouts. Open the in-game control guide or Options menu for the exact button assigned to your chosen console scheme.

What records a successful exploration photograph?
Photographed wraiths, specters, revenants and Twin Dolls are tracked in the Spirit List found under Files. Specter photographs can also award Photo Points, while a successful Revenant photograph can provide an item.
Why did my Fatal Frame fail even though the ghost attacked?
The timing cue is the violent flash in the center of the filament. If the shutter was pressed before or after that flash, the photograph may be an ordinary shot. Keep the wraith framed and wait specifically for the central indicator.
Can I use Photo Mode to capture a ghost?
No. Photo Mode is a separate screenshot feature. Ghost damage and Spirit List entries require the in-game Camera Obscura and the appropriate combat or exploration conditions.
How do I photograph an invisible ghost?
Revenants are normally invisible. Obtain the Exposure Filter, select it, and photograph the location where the Revenant is present. A successful capture can reward an item.

Use the Paraceptual Filter to photograph the remaining doll’s location. A crimson-butterfly trail points toward the missing doll; then frame both dolls together for the required capture.
Is Kusabi vulnerable to any Camera Obscura shot?
No. The publisher explicitly says the Camera Obscura has no effect on Kusabi, so ordinary photographs and filter tactics should not be treated as a damage solution for that enemy.
The Bottom Line
For ordinary wraiths, focus first, turn for the head-on frame, illuminate as many red focal points as possible and use the center-filament flash to land Fatal Frames. Build Shutter Chance, combine it with a Fatal Frame to start film-free Fatal Time, and switch filters when range, spacing or exploration conditions demand it. Specters, Revenants, Twin Dolls and Kusabi each follow separate rules.
