If Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly REMAKE will not launch, hangs on the butterfly, shows black videos, stutters or ignores a gamepad, start with the fixes that match the symptom: install Microsoft’s VP9 Video Extensions, disable Steam and other overlays, lower Volumetric Fog and Shadows, and test Steam Input in both modes. - Update the graphics driver. If a normal update does not help an access-violation crash, a clean reinstall with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) is a fallback.
- Disable the Steam Overlay. Also turn off Discord and GeForce overlays while diagnosing crashes or micro-stutter.
- Use the title-screen Screen/Graphics menus, not the pause menu, for settings that are greyed out in play.
- For a controller, try a USB cable, then test Steam Input enabled and disabled, restarting the game after each change.
- Keep the frame-rate option at 60. An unlocked value that wanders between rates can make movement look choppy or even run the game in slow motion.
These steps address different failure mechanisms; a working codec will not cure an overlay memory leak, and a frame-rate cap will not make a missing gamepad driver appear.
How do I fix “game won’t launch,” the butterfly loading screen, or black cutscenes?
The first fix is VP9 Video Extensions. Magic Game World reported that the pre-rendered cutscenes use VP9 and that systems without the Microsoft codec may fail before the title reaches the menu or remain indefinitely on the butterfly animation.

Windows sequence
- Install VP9 Video Extensions from Microsoft’s Store listing (ID
9N4D0MSMP0PT). - Restart Windows, then run Steam’s file-integrity check.
- Update the GPU driver. If the same failure remains, perform a clean driver reinstall.
- Right-click
FatalFrameII.exe, open Properties → Compatibility, and test Run this program as an administrator. On Windows 11, also test Disable fullscreen optimizations. - If the message is
0xc0000005(Access Violation), add the game folder to Windows Defender’s allow list only if you understand the security trade-off; Magic Game World attributes this case to Defender blocking a memory allocation.
When the video is still black
VP9 remains the primary fix. After installing it, Magic Game World suggests raising Model LOD if the video area is black while the rest of the game renders. Do not confuse a 30fps pre-rendered scene with a fault: PC cutscenes are locked at 30fps even when gameplay is set to 60.
Proton and Steam Deck launch crashes
Valve Proton maintainer kisak-valve described the opening crash in issue #9567 as “The game crash looks like an access violation (c0000005) in mfmp4srcsnk.dll.” Users reported that Proton Experimental addressed the opening crash around 15 March 2026, but later video-effect crashes remained for some Steam Deck and Linux players across Proton Experimental, Hotfix, Proton 9 and Proton-GE.
If the opening movie still crashes, a workaround reported by Proton users is:
PROTON_MEDIA_USE_GST=1 GST_PLUGIN_FEATURE_RANK=protonaudioconverterbin:NONE %command%Enter it in the game’s Steam Properties → Launch Options. This is a community workaround, not an official fix, and it can affect video playback in other titles if copied to the wrong game.
Why does Fatal Frame 2 Remake crash when I use the Camera Obscura?
Camera Obscura crashes are associated by Magic Game World with a memory leak involving the Steam Overlay and high shadow resolution. Disable the Steam Overlay and set Shadows to Medium; disable Discord and GeForce overlays during troubleshooting as well.
- Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties.
- On General, clear Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game.
- Return to the title screen, open Screen/Graphics, and set Shadows: Medium.
- Restart the game before entering another ghost encounter.
Ver. 1.03.03 (27 March 2026) fixed separate Camera Obscura issues: re-obtaining it in Chapter Seven and a Motion Blur option that incorrectly affected normal motion blur. Those patch notes do not identify the overlay-related memory leak as fixed.

How do I stop silent crashes when walking through doors?
A door-transition crash is often caused by missing or corrupted localized audio files. Verify the installation first; if the crash persists, install the current Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributables for both x86 and x64.
- Steam Library → game → Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity of game files.
- Install or repair both the 32-bit (x86) and 64-bit (x64) Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages.
- Restart Windows and retry the same door transition.
Do not delete save data as a first response. Saves are stored under %LOCALAPPDATA%KoeiTecmoFatalFrameIISavedata<user-id>, and Steam Cloud is supported.
How do I fix stuttering, hitching, or a “worst 60 fps” feeling?
Fatal Frame 2 Remake can stutter for several unrelated reasons: first-use shader compilation, overlay video hooks, GPU-heavy fog, or frame pacing that is neither a true 60 nor a true 120. Treat each cause separately.

Some controls are unavailable in the pause menu. Return to the title screen to edit the complete Screen/Graphics set.
First-entry shader hitch
A hitch the first time you enter a new area can be shader compilation rather than a sustained performance problem. A Nexus “FIX Stuttering” configuration adds shader_precompiled_num to %LOCALAPPDATA%KoeiTecmoFatalFrameIISavedatagraphics_option.json so the engine processes more shaders at startup, then asks you to mark the file read-only.
This workaround is fragile. A 11 September 2026 report says the game can rewrite the value to 0 and remove the read-only flag. Back up the file, check it after updates, and remove the read-only attribute before intentionally changing graphics in-game.

Frame pacing and the Katana Engine
DSOGaming reported that the PC version offers 30fps and 60fps choices, while cutscenes remain at 30fps. The Katana Engine ties game logic to frame rate: DSOGaming warns that values other than a locked 60 or 120 feel choppy, and Magic Game World reports that a nominal 120fps that cannot be maintained can make the game run in slow motion.
For external pacing, community reports include a RivaTuner Statistics Server limit of 16,666 microseconds (16.666ms, equivalent to 60fps), in-game V-Sync off with driver V-Sync forced on, and setting the monitor to 60Hz when driver V-Sync alone produced tearing. These are troubleshooting options, not guaranteed fixes; change one variable at a time.

What performance should a PC deliver?
DSOGaming’s published figures show why upscaling is useful. At 1080p maximum settings, its top tested GPUs held a constant 60fps. At 1440p maximum, only the GeForce RTX 4090, RTX 5080 and RTX 5090 stayed locked at 60; the Radeon RX 7900 XTX and RX 9070 XT dipped to 55fps. Native 4K maximum stayed locked at 60 only on the RTX 5090, while that card reached a 72fps minimum and 77fps average with an unlocked frame rate. Those are source-reported results, not a guarantee for every system.
The game includes FSR 2 and DLSS 3.1 controls. Although files for XeSS and NVIDIA frame-generation technologies are present, DSOGaming reports no in-game Frame Generation option and XeSS is not exposed in the menu. Use the DLSS or FSR Quality option you can actually select; do not assume a hidden DLL enables a supported feature.
How do I fix “Gamepad Not Working / Not Detected on Steam PC”?
Steam lists full controller support, but this title is most reliable with an XInput/Xbox pad connected by USB. DualSense and DualShock 4 are marked USB-only for the Steam version; Bluetooth can leave them undetected.
Try Steam Input both ways
- Steam Library → right-click the game → Properties → Controller.
- Set Override for Fatal Frame II to Enable Steam Input, fully exit the game, and relaunch.
- If there is still no input, return to the same menu, choose Disable Steam Input, and restart again. The restart is required for either setting to take effect.
- In Steam Settings → Controller → External Gamepad Settings, enable only the controller family you own. If enabling it fails, test with that family disabled.
Connection and Windows checks
- Use a direct USB cable before troubleshooting Bluetooth or a wireless dongle. A wired DualSense or DualShock 4 is the documented mode for this game.
- For an Xbox controller, install Microsoft’s Xbox Extended Feature Support driver if Steam requests it.
- Open Windows USB Game Controllers → Advanced and select the intended Xbox device when several are listed.
- In Device Manager → Human Interface Devices, disable duplicate or ghost HID keyboard entries created by the controller, then update or reinstall the gamepad driver.
- Unplug unnecessary USB devices and disable virtual-controller software such as vJoy.
- Run Steam as administrator and press

Proton and Linux controller failures
Controller detection is a separate open issue in Valve’s Proton tracker (#9567). Reports include an 8BitDo Ultimate working through its 2.4GHz dongle, while a Flydigi Vader 5 Pro appeared as a generic Xbox pad yet produced no in-game input. Suggested launch options from commenters are PROTON_DISABLE_HIDRAW=1 and PROTON_PREFER_SDL=1; use one at a time and remove it if another controller stops working. A DualSense over Bluetooth worked for one reporter only after the game was restarted with the controller already powered on.
Is Fatal Frame 2 Remake playable on Steam Deck?
SteamDB’s report for build 23673670, timestamped 21 September 2026, rates the game Playable. The default Deck controller configuration provides full functionality and Deck glyphs, but the report says manual graphics configuration is needed for good performance and recommends the stable Proton runtime.
Expect the same video-codec and frame-pacing caveats as on desktop Linux. If a later in-game video effect crashes, test Proton versions rather than assuming the opening-cutscene fix solved every media path.
Which official patches matter for crashes and stuttering?
The latest named public update is Ver. 1.04.00, dated 22 June 2026. Its notes say, “Fixed issues to improve game stability,” and list a Chapter Four Light Key event, the Spirit Stone achievement/trophy on PlayStation 5, Xbox and Steam, and Arabic language support. SteamDB recorded later build activity on 18 October 2026, but public notes do not identify every change.

The configuration file is %LOCALAPPDATA%KoeiTecmoFatalFrameIISavedatagraphics_option.json. Back it up before editing. A setting that produces an unstable unlocked frame rate can damage playability without causing a conventional crash.
Should I install community fixes such as FF2RFix?
Only after the official settings, codec, driver and overlay steps work. FF2RFix, an ASI plugin by Lyall on Codeberg, can add custom resolutions, ultrawide support, non-16:9 HUD placement, intro-logo skipping and adjustable frame-rate targets. Its README instructs Windows users to extract files into steamappscommonFatalFrameII; Steam Deck/Linux users may need WINEDLLOVERRIDES="dinput8=n,b" %command%.

Native120FPSOption by MixedNutsJP exposes 120 in the in-game Max FPS menu; its author says the engine already runs 120 internally and that the menu normally offers only 30 and 60. It requires the author’s dinput8.dll loader beside FatalFrameII.exe. Use 120 only if the system can sustain it, and remember that cutscenes above 60 can desynchronize audio.
These plugins alter game files and may need reinstalling after updates. Remove them when reporting a problem to support so the official configuration can be reproduced.
What is the shortest recovery path for each symptom?
- Won’t launch, butterfly screen or black cutscene: install VP9 Video Extensions, verify files, update the GPU driver, then test administrator mode and fullscreen-optimization changes.
- Camera Obscura crash: disable Steam/Discord/GeForce overlays and set Shadows to Medium.
- Door-transition crash: verify files, then repair both Visual C++ Redistributable architectures.
- Stutter entering a new area: allow shader compilation to finish, consider the fragile

Does reinstalling Fatal Frame 2 install the VP9 codec automatically?
No. VP9 Video Extensions is a separate Windows component, so reinstalling the Steam game may leave the launch failure unchanged. Install the Microsoft Store package first, then verify the game files.
Can I use a DualSense’s adaptive triggers or motion aiming in this remake?
No. The PC implementation supports ordinary controller input and PlayStation prompts when the pad is recognized, but it does not provide DualSense adaptive triggers, specialized haptics or motion sensors. A USB connection is the documented mode.

Graphics options are in %LOCALAPPDATA%KoeiTecmoFatalFrameIISavedatagraphics_option.json; saves are in the user-ID subfolder beneath the same directory. Back up both before deleting or editing anything, because Steam Cloud can restore saves but not every custom graphics change.
Why does my monitor show tearing even when the game is set to 60fps?
The game’s in-game V-Sync, GPU-driver V-Sync, monitor refresh rate and external limiters can disagree. Community reports found that a 60Hz display or a 16.666ms external frame-time cap sometimes produced steadier pacing; change one synchronization layer at a time.
