Your setup also affects the group: Wild Strikes is a major melee benefit, while choosing a defensive rune can mean giving it up. The recommendations below draw on Wowhead’s Phase 8 overview, updated April 7, 2025, and Icy Veins’ talent and rune page, updated July 18, 2026; they are not proof of October 2026 encounter balance or a current simulation ranking.
Build Feral around damage, with room for off-tanking
For a cat-focused PvE build, start with talents that support Shred and powershifting, then reach Leader of the Pack. Icy Veins’ July 18, 2026 recommendation also takes Furor, Natural Shapeshifter, Natural Weapons and Omen of Clarity in a damage/off-tank framework. Treat this as a starting point rather than a universal point-by-point prescription: the right balance depends on whether your raid needs you to contribute damage, cover an off-tank role, or both.
Rune choices make that tradeoff more visible. The Icy Veins recommendations below are useful starting guidance, not a fresh encounter-by-encounter optimization test.
| Slot | Recommended rune | What it contributes |
|---|---|---|
| Gloves | Mangle | Useful when Shred is unavailable; also buffs Shred damage. |
| Pants | Savage Roar | Supports the Savage Roar damage-maintenance effect. |
| Chest | Wild Strikes | Provides a valuable melee aura to the group; see the utility section below. |
| Waist | Berserk | Damage cooldown. |
| Feet | King of the Jungle | Faster-recharging damage cooldown. |
| Head | Gore | Recommended in the Icy Veins setup; its specific effect is not described in the cited recommendation. |
| Wrist | Elune’s Fires | Extends Rip. |
| Back | Improved Swipe | Supports area damage. |
| Ring | Feral Combat Specialization | Recommended in the Icy Veins setup; its specific effect is not described in the cited recommendation. |
| Ring | Defense Specialization | Recommended in the Icy Veins setup; its specific effect is not described in the cited recommendation. |
If you need to become sturdier for an off-tank assignment, a defensive rune choice can be worthwhile, but it may cost you the Wild Strikes contribution. Check your actual rune slots and group needs before treating any list as fixed.

Feral Druid DPS rotation: maintain effects, then spend energy
Think of the rotation as a priority loop, not a rigid sequence. The Phase 8 overview’s guidance is to maintain Savage Roar, Faerie Fire (Feral) and Mangle; refresh Rake and Rip when they expire; and use Shred as the default filler when positioning permits. Adapt this to your encounter, your rune and set configuration, and whether you can safely reach a target’s rear.
- Keep the important effects active. Maintain Savage Roar, Faerie Fire (Feral) and Mangle. If one is about to expire, prioritize refreshing it over an ordinary filler attack.
- Refresh Rake and Rip after they fall off. Avoid clipping them early as a default. Elune’s Fires can extend Rip, so account for that rune when judging when it needs attention.
- Use Shred as your filler. Mangle can help when Shred is unavailable and buffs Shred damage, but positioning still matters for using Shred.
- Powershift when waiting would cost an attack. If your next energy tick would delay the next ability, use the powershifting approach below—provided you can afford its mana and global-cooldown cost.
- Use cooldowns and area attacks for the fight in front of you. Berserk and King of the Jungle are damage cooldowns in the recommended setup; Improved Swipe supports area damage. Time them for the encounter rather than forcing a single-target sequence into every situation.
This is a flexible priority attributed to the Phase 8 overview, not a verified mathematically optimal action list for every boss or rune combination.

How to powershift as a Feral Druid
Powershifting trades mana and a global cooldown for energy: leave Cat Form and re-enter it to gain energy, then spend that energy on another attack. Furor supports the technique, and the Phase 8 overview discusses Wolfshead Trophy as part of its 60-energy description. It is not free energy: shifting consumes mana and time, and may be a poor choice when the encounter is about to move, your mana is low, or staying in form is more valuable.
- Check the next energy tick. If it will arrive in time for your next ability, keep attacking rather than shifting.
- Shift when waiting would delay your next attack. With Furor and the relevant setup, leave Cat Form and re-enter to gain energy.
- Spend the energy promptly. Use it on the next appropriate attack in your priority—usually a maintenance effect that needs refreshing or Shred as filler.
- Reassess mana and encounter timing. Do not powershift through movement, downtime, or a mana constraint just to repeat the technique.
That decision rule—shift when the next energy tick would delay your next ability—comes from the Phase 8 overview. Your exact timing depends on your current energy, mana, and the fight.

Feral Druid stat priority and gear assumptions
Wowhead’s Phase 8 overview gives this relative gear-budget order: Expertise, Hit, Agility, Strength, bonus weapon damage, Crit, Attack Power, then Haste. Read it as a heuristic for comparing item budgets, not as a per-point value table or a universal ranking for every gear set.
The overview’s sample stat weights are based on Phase 6 Best-in-Slot gear with four-piece Tier 2.5 and no Tier 3. It also notes that set bonuses can change stat value. That example therefore does not establish a current Phase 8 best-in-slot list, a universal stat conversion, or a current DPS result. Favor comparisons that account for your actual set bonuses and the assumptions behind the gear being evaluated.

Why a Feral is useful to a raid
Wild Strikes is a personal build choice with group-wide consequences. The Phase 8 overview describes its aura as raid-wide and particularly valuable to Alliance raids. For Horde groups, having Wild Strikes can free the Shaman’s air totem slot for another option. If you change to a defensive tank rune, make sure the group understands that you may be giving up this contribution.
Icy Veins’ broader Season of Discovery Feral introduction, last updated April 8, 2025, also identifies Mark of the Wild, Innervate and Rebirth as class utility, and describes Feral as flexible for off-tanking. Use those as broad role context, not as evidence that a particular rune or encounter setup is best in Phase 8.

What this guide does—and does not—establish about Phase 8
Blizzard described Phase 8 as the culmination of Season of Discovery and introduced the Scarlet Enclave raid. Its Classic page continues to list Season of Discovery as an available mode. Those facts establish the phase and mode context, not the current balance of any class, encounter, or rune.
The cited guides do not establish an October 2026 simulation ranking, a complete current Phase 8 best-in-slot list, or a boss-by-boss performance order for Feral. Avoid treating a named item list, stat ranking, or rune setup as definitive unless it has been checked against the phase, set bonuses, encounter, and character configuration it claims to represent.
