FINAL FANTASY VII REBIRTH uses character-focused trials to make the party’s emotional struggles playable, while its world links distinct regions without opening them all at once. Its music includes both the official theme, “No Promises to Keep,” and a separate, exuberant song from a Junon sidequest—the piece some fans call the “bow wow wow” song. “Catchiest” is a matter of taste, not an award or verified ranking.
Spoilers: The sections on the Temple of the Ancients and the ending discuss late-game story details.
How Rebirth makes trauma playable
In a December 18, 2024 interview with MobileSyrup, director Naoki Hamaguchi described “bonds” as a central concept in Rebirth. That idea connects the game’s party relationships to both combat and story: Hamaguchi has also said he wanted the narrative and battle systems to reflect the relationships at the heart of the experience, in a PlayStation interview.
That focus becomes literal in a new Temple of the Ancients sequence. Before the final battle, players control party members through individual psychological trials. Hamaguchi said the broad idea arose as the team designed the final dungeon: they wanted players to experience and synchronize with characters they had accompanied. The idea was not already fully laid out in story writer Kazushige Nojima’s plot; Hamaguchi said Nojima’s scenario contained only a general mention of gameplay in that area.

“We wanted to have the players experience and synchronize with the different characters.”
Hamaguchi cited the Mugen Train arc of the Demon Slayer film as an inspiration for the idea of characters confronting their pasts. He said he brought that influence to co-director Motomu Toriyama to consider adapting it into the scenario. That is a reported creative influence, not a claim that Rebirth directly adapts the film.

What the ending’s ambiguity means—and what it doesn’t settle
Producer Yoshinori Kitase connected Rebirth’s expanded depiction of Cloud’s mental state to a moment in the original FINAL FANTASY VII when Cloud raises his sword as if to strike Aerith. In his account, the Remake project gave the team more room to show Sephiroth taking hold of Cloud’s mind.
Kitase said the ambiguity at Rebirth’s ending reflects Cloud’s inability to accept Aerith’s loss, and that the uncertainty was intended to keep players interested in the third installment. This is Kitase’s explanation of the creative intent; it is not a definitive, creator-confirmed resolution of every question the ending leaves open.

Is Rebirth open world?
Rebirth’s world is connected in design, but it is not fully open from the start. Hamaguchi described an “open field” approach across seven geographically distinct major regions, including the Grasslands, Gongaga and Nibel. The team wanted the overarching world to feel like one connected space, but the story did not permit the entire map to open at once.
Instead, players reach regions in story order. Each brings its own environments, exploration, sidequests and story arcs. Later, riding the Tiny Bronco helps make the links between regions more apparent. The result is best understood as connected, region-based exploration with story gating—not a map where every destination is immediately available.

“the overarching world needed to be one connected sort of space.”
In the same 2024 discussion, Hamaguchi spoke about the Highwind as a vehicle for the still-forthcoming third game. That was a statement about the sequel’s intended scale at the time, not confirmation of the released game’s final implementation.

What is the song in Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
There are two different songs behind the question. The official theme is “No Promises to Keep,” composed by Nobuo Uematsu, with lyrics by Kazushige Nojima and vocals by Loren Allred. Square Enix announced the credits and described Uematsu’s aim as showing Aerith’s inner strength rather than repeating the poignant melody associated with “Aerith’s Theme.” In the game, Aerith performs it during LOVELESS, the stage play. See Square Enix’s theme-song announcement.
The other is the pop-style background song associated with the Salmon dog sidequest in Junon, which fans affectionately call the “bow wow wow” song. In the MobileSyrup interview, Hamaguchi credited Toriyama with working with the composer on the catchy track. He said the quest introduced an area of Junon that was absent from the original game, with the dog and music helping make the content enjoyable.
| Song | Role in the game | What creators or official credits establish |
|---|---|---|
| “No Promises to Keep” | Official theme; performed by Aerith during LOVELESS | Composed by Nobuo Uematsu, lyrics by Kazushige Nojima, performed by Loren Allred; Square Enix announcement |
| Junon sidequest song (“bow wow wow”) | Pop-style background music for the Salmon dog sidequest | Hamaguchi said Toriyama worked with the composer on the song; MobileSyrup interview |
“Catchiest” remains a subjective description: the available creator comments establish the songs’ roles and some of their intent, not an objective ranking. The Game Awards nominated Rebirth in seven categories in 2024, and the game won Best Score and Music; those are game-level honors, not a song-specific award or proof that either track was the year’s catchiest.
Who made Rebirth?
Kitase directed the original FINAL FANTASY VII and produced the Remake series. Hamaguchi directed Rebirth and co-directed the wider Remake project. Toriyama is credited as Rebirth co-director, and Nojima as story writer. Those roles help explain the interview’s different perspectives: Hamaguchi discussed how the playable experience was shaped, while Kitase spoke to the Remake project’s treatment of Cloud and the ending.
