In Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, hold Cross (X) when the race countdown reaches 2 for the Start Dash, press R1 to spend a Dash charge, and hold R2 while steering into a corner to drift. For flight, use race jumps and updrafts, or the region-specific Sky and Ocean chocobos; to land in Glide de Chocobo, release R2 and manage your descent with the stick. The 1997 game uses a different system: Square raises cruising speed, Circle is the stamina-draining sprint, and R1+R2 restores stamina. This guide separates those control schemes so a Rebirth player does not accidentally follow the original game’s buttons.
What are the Rebirth chocobo controls?
The following map applies to Gold Saucer races on PlayStation 5 and to the matching DualSense layout on PC. Keyboard and mouse bindings can be customized in the PC version, so the named controller buttons are the reliable reference when a guide gives no keyboard equivalent.

Three details prevent most control mistakes: Start Dash is X, not R2; R1 is the Dash button, not the drift button; and drift requires both steering input and R2. A Eurogamer explanation describes drift as “L and R1,” but R1 is independently the Dash control in the other published maps. The stick-plus-R2 mapping is therefore the internally consistent working control.
How do I start a dash in a Rebirth chocobo race?
Watch the countdown and begin holding X when it reaches 2. Keep holding through the launch. A successful cue is the chocobo leaning back or dropping into a prepared stance before the gate opens. Eurogamer (4 March 2024), ADAPT Chance (8 February 2025), and a correction in Game8’s comments agree on X. Game8’s article text says R2, but that line conflicts with the other accounts and with the in-game action assignment.

Shinra Avian Breastplate increases the chance of dashing from the gate and raises speed when it succeeds. Gi Legwraps start a race with one Dash already available, while the Scorpion Breastplate adds one to the number of stored charges.
How do I sprint or dash during a race?
Collect yellow Dash Balloons, then press R1 to spend a charge. The default storage limit is two charges, and ADAPT Chance reports a burst of up to two seconds. Yellow balloons refill the gauge, so there is no reason to hoard a charge when a straight or an overtake is available.

- Blue Speed Balloons: each raises average speed by one, up to a maximum of 10. A collision with another chocobo or an obstacle removes the extra speed.
- Yellow Dash Balloons: fill the R1 gauge. Scorpion Breastplate increases the stored maximum by one.
- Red Ability Balloons: fill the L1 meter. Speed Burst, Rock Solid, Chocojump, Hoverbird and Birdserk last longer when additional reds are collected while active; Birdshot and Chocobubble instead restock their ammunition, with Birdshot able to reach six consecutive shots after a full restock.
Use R1 on straights and after a drift rather than waiting for a perfect final lap. Rodeo Poncho supplies a Dash charge on entering the final lap when the gauge is not full; Shinra Avian Greaves increase Dash speed; Hyperion’s Armor increases Dash duration.
How do I drift and get the cornering boost?
Push the left stick into the corner and hold R2. Continue until sparks or small flames appear around the chocobo’s feet, then release R2 while pointing through the turn. The visible spark ladder has three stages: no acceleration, low acceleration and high acceleration. Releasing at the later stage gives the stronger exit acceleration.
- Approach the corner on the inside line rather than colliding with another racer.
- Hold the stick toward the turn and press R2 before the bend tightens.
- Keep the input until the spark color advances; releasing early gives no full drift boost.
- Release R2 to straighten out and carry the acceleration onto the next section.
Drifting also opens shortcuts on some tracks. Rodeo Legwraps specifically increase drift duration and speed. Cornering raises both turn response and drift execution, so a bird with better Cornering can hold a longer line before the turn becomes unsafe. Cactus gates cycle every three seconds, according to ADAPT Chance; time the release so the gate is open rather than drifting into a closed barrier.
How does flying and landing work in Rebirth races?
Races use jumps and updrafts rather than a free-flight button. Launch from a ramp or updraft, then steer across the airborne section; a higher Weight stat makes the bird harder to knock aside but shortens its flight distance. Updrafts can cut across parts of a course, and Fango’s Chocojump extends airtime and creates a landing shockwave that knocks down nearby rivals.

Fango’s Chocojump
Press L1 with a full Ability meter to jump high, avoid obstacles or stay airborne longer. On landing, the shockwave can hit nearby racers. The ability is useful both as a shortcut tool and as a defensive attack when a pack is close.
Aponi’s Hoverbird
Hoverbird glides just above the ground, bypassing rough terrain, traps and some out-of-bounds penalties. It can fly a short distance to reach shortcuts that a normal jump cannot.
Landing without losing the line
Plan the landing before you leave the ramp: high Weight shortens the arc, while Chocojump lengthens it. Aim for the track beyond an obstacle, then use a Dash after touching down rather than during a blind airborne turn.
How do I fly a chocobo on the Rebirth world map?
Press R1 to call the regional chocobo. The responding bird depends on the region: Junon supplies the Mountain type, Cosmo Canyon the Sky type, and Nibel the Ocean type. While mounted, the universal actions are steering, dash, dismount, scent (D-pad Up, then R3 to face a treasure), scour or excavate (D-pad Down), and Terrain Action. The exact face-button glyph for ordinary mounted dash is image-rendered in the reference table, so use the on-screen prompt rather than guessing a face button.

Sky Chocobo: gliding from marked points
In Cosmo Canyon, Aponi launches from marked gliding points and rides air currents across gorges. The markers show where a launch is possible. You retain the mount after the Chapter 10 Bonds of Trust wrangle even if you do not complete every related objective.
Ocean Chocobo: Chocojet over water
On Selena, hold L2 while standing on water to activate Chocojet. Game8’s 8 March 2024 guide states that L2 can be held as long as desired. On dry land, the same input only makes the bird levitate a short distance; it does not produce full water flight. Ocean Chocobo can also hover slightly above ground, allowing a controlled descent from cliffs that Cloud cannot safely drop from.

- Mountain/Belle: climb marked cliff faces with Vertical Scaling.
- Jungle/Fango: bounce on giant mushrooms and slide along large branches.
- Normal/Piko: use Furious Dash after the Chapter 2 Hustle de Chocobo sequence.
How do I control Glide de Chocobo and land safely?
Glide de Chocobo is the dedicated flying lesson in Chapter 10’s Cosmo Canyon Bonds of Trust quest. It uses Aponi and a different interpretation of R2 from the ordinary race dash: hold R2 to stay in a glide, release it to drop, and use the stick to dive or recover height.
- Hold the launch input until the circular gauge fills; Aponi then takes off and forward movement becomes automatic.
- Keep holding R2 to maintain the glide. Releasing it makes Aponi drop rapidly.
- Pull the stick down to dive and gain speed.
- Once enough momentum is available, push the stick up to climb. Uta’s GameFAQs guide (26 January 2025) says this recovers most, but not all, of the altitude spent in the dive.
- To pass stacked 500-point rings, release R2 while directly above them so the drop passes through both.
Touching the ground ends a run, so do not pull up late if the course is already descending. Motion-control tilt is optional; DualSense on PC follows the PS5 layout. Game8 has a contradictory tip saying to hold R2 to fall faster, while Uta’s later, fuller map and the release-to-drop technique above match the launch and glide behavior.

The Course 3 thresholds above are from Uta’s later-updated 2025 guide. Game8’s 2024 page lists the same rewards at 4,800, 7,200 and 9,600; treat those as an alternate published table, not values to average. Rank I on each course is enough for the quest. Rank III on Course 1 awards Yuffie’s Crescent Sickle, and Rank III on all three contributes to Johnny’s Treasure Trove.
Which Rebirth chocobo or gear should I choose?
There are seven racers: six regional birds plus Mecha-Chocobo, unlocked through Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop. Every bird has Speed, Acceleration, Weight, Cornering, Intelligence and Strength. Speed controls the top end; Acceleration restores speed after bumps; Weight resists knockback but reduces flight distance; Cornering improves turns and drifts; Intelligence affects ability potency, charge speed and duration; Strength reduces slipping on inclines, off-road surfaces and water.

Rodeo Hat increases Weight, which improves bump resistance but shortens flight. Rodeo Legwraps improve drift duration and speed. What are the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII chocobo controls?
The original game’s Chocobo Square is a stamina-management race, not Rebirth’s balloon-and-drift system. The table below covers the PlayStation defaults and the majority mapping used by PC re-releases.

Some references, including an IGN page updated in 2013, put sprint on Triangle and maximum speed on Circle. The control table shared by Final Fantasy Wiki, Almars Guides, StrategyWiki and ff7.info places sprint on Circle and cruising-speed increase on Square, which is the mapping used here. PC documentation also differs: Almars lists Page Up + Target for Steam, while the Wiki and StrategyWiki majority map is Page Down + Target.
A practical original-game sprint pattern
- Switch to Manual with Select or the touch pad.
- Hold R1+R2 so stamina regenerates while you push the bird.
- Tap Square to raise cruising speed, then hold Circle for the sprint.
- Spend the opening sprint until roughly one-fifth of stamina remains, cruise through the middle with Square, and sprint the home stretch. This is StrategyWiki’s community pattern, which cites success against Teioh with 90 Speed and 700 Stamina.
Other guides recommend keeping at least one-quarter stamina, or holding Square plus the refill buttons for about two-thirds of the race before adding Circle in the final cavern section. All approaches depend on the same principle: an empty stamina meter drops the bird to a crawl, so do not hold Circle continuously without regeneration.
Classes, Teioh and preparation
Cloud first needs one win to leave Corel Prison. Later, rented birds race through C, B, A and S classes; three wins promote to the next class, and six chocobos start each heat. Teioh’s listed Speed is the player’s Speed plus 10 percent and its Stamina is the player’s Stamina plus 25 percent, so it can exceed the normal player cap. Teioh is a black chocobo and is not slowed by the course’s space, water or climbing sections. Blocking it on a straight and saving a final sprint is more reliable than trying to out-accelerate it from the gate.

Original world-map riding
Owned birds use the D-pad to steer. Yellow chocobos cross walkable land faster and avoid random battles; blue birds cross rivers; green birds cross mountains; black birds cross rivers and mountains; gold birds cross all three, including sea. Gold is required to reach Round Island for Knights of Round, whose summon can inflict up to 129,987 damage according to StrategyWiki.

Rebirth is an analog racing game built around positioning, drift stages and short ability windows. The 1997 race is a stamina tank: raise speed with Square, sprint with Circle, and refill while managing the red meter. Switching games without switching that mental model is the main cause of apparently “wrong” buttons.
What does Rebirth require on PC?
Square Enix lists Rebirth for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PC FAQ specifies 155 GB of SSD storage and up to 120 frames per second on high-spec hardware with NVIDIA DLSS. DualSense on PC follows the PS5 control layout, while keyboard and mouse and mini-game-specific bindings are supported. Because patches can move PC bind labels, check the current Mini-Game or Controller settings screen if a key shown by a guide does not match your installation.

Can I change the chocobo race buttons on PC?
Yes. The PC release supports keyboard and mouse, and mini-game bindings are customizable. The controller map remains the useful baseline because individual patches can change the labels shown in the bind screen.
Why does my Glide de Chocobo run end immediately?
A run ends the instant Aponi touches the ground. Keep R2 held to maintain the glide, release only when you intend to drop through rings, and use a dive followed by an upward stick input to recover height before the landing becomes unavoidable.
Do I need to finish Bonds of Trust to keep the Sky Chocobo?
No. The Cosmo Canyon bird remains available after the wrangle; completing the quest is required for the minigame and its rewards, not for permanently retaining the mount.
How many races are needed to move up a Chocobo Square class in the original game?
You need three wins in the current class to promote. The sequence is C, then B, A and S, with six birds entering each race.

Is Teioh’s advantage a fixed encounter percentage?
No publisher encounter rate is established. What is documented is the stat advantage: Teioh has 10 percent more Speed and 25 percent more Stamina than the player’s bird, and those values can exceed the normal cap.
