Final Fantasy VII Rebirth has six regional chocobo mounts, and each must be unlocked separately. You call the bird native to your current region with R1; catching one does not let you summon it elsewhere. Their special actions are also region-bound: Belle climbs painted cliffs, Fango bounces on jungle mushrooms, Aponi glides from marked fans, and Selena uses the Chocojet over water. The Corel rental bird is the major exception to expectations: it works around North Corel and Costa del Sol, but not in the South Corel desert, where the Buggy is required.
This guide covers Final Fantasy VII Rebirth (the 2024 second game in the remake project), not the 1997 original’s separate catching-and-breeding system.

How many chocobo mounts are in FF7 Rebirth?
There are six usable regional mounts, one for each open-world region. VGKAMI counted six unique chocobos in 2024. Two are story gifts, three are obtained through regional wrangling activities, and Corel’s is rented rather than caught.

How do I get a chocobo early in FF7 Rebirth?
Piko is the first mount and is mandatory in Chapter 2. After leaving Kalm, follow the story to Bill’s Chocobo Ranch east of town via the Abandoned Dock. The tutorial quest, Hustle de Chocobo, teaches the basic wrangling loop.

- Enter the tall grass and crouch so the escaped birds do not spot you.
- Throw rocks to turn the other chocobos away from Piko.
- Approach Piko from behind and press Triangle to mount.
- Return to the ranch. After Billy prepares the next step, complete the short training ride; Chadley then introduces World Intel.
Once Piko is registered, press R1 anywhere in the Grasslands to call him. The normal yellow chocobo has no special climbing, gliding or water-launch ability, but it is required for crossing the Grasslands swamp.
Where do I unlock every regional chocobo?
Junon: catching Belle at Gabe’s Ranch
In Chapter 4, go to Gabe’s Ranch and begin Stuck in a Rut. Belle is west of the ranch, south of the entrance to Under Junon, at the abandoned farm marked by Chocobo Intel. The capture is a stealth puzzle.

- Activate the minecart switches by hand or by throwing rocks.
- Crouch-walk behind moving carts to stay outside the yellow chocobos’ sight lines.
- Reach Belle and press Triangle to wrangle her.
You keep the mount as soon as Belle is captured; finishing every objective in Stuck in a Rut is not required for the bird itself. Belle is the Mountain Chocobo. Guides variously call her grey, black or dark grey; the useful distinction is her orange talons and marked-cliff climbing. She can scale only walls painted with the distinctive white-and-orange streaks, not every mountain face.
Corel: renting the North Corel bird
After leaving Costa del Sol at the beginning of Chapter 7, use the Rent-a-Bird stall near the settlement exit. There is no wrangling minigame. A Rent-a-Bird Membership costs 300 gil, according to Gameranx and Gamer Guides, or you can earn a free membership by completing Rendezvous in Costa del Sol. The rental bird is the standard normal chocobo, with yellow-to-orange plumage depending on the guide’s color description.
This mount is deliberately local. It works in the North Corel environment around Costa del Sol, but the South Corel desert is a separate travel zone. Once the Buggy becomes available in roughly Chapters 8–9, use it for sand, debris and shallow water; it is faster than a chocobo but too large for narrow paths and cannot be summoned anywhere. Costa del Sol’s resort streets use Wheelies rather than the wilderness chocobo.

Gongaga: receiving Fango from the story
Fango is not missable. In Chapter 9, after Cloud’s Abandoned Reactor boss encounter, control switches to Tifa and Aerith, who receive Jungle Chocobos to reach the reactor. Clear the Abandoned Reactor dungeon and Cissnei gives you Fango permanently.
Fango’s High Jump launches from the region’s large mushrooms, and the bird can skate or grind along broad tree branches. Those marked fungi and branches are the intended routes through Gongaga’s dense forest; Fango cannot climb Junon’s painted cliffs or use the launch hardware in Cosmo Canyon.
Cosmo Canyon: stealth-wrangling Aponi
In Chapter 10, visit Kamaria’s Ranch on the path to the Cosmo Canyon settlement and take Bonds of Trust. Aponi is north of the ranch, near Activation Intel Tower 1. Capturing her completes the mount unlock even if you have not finished every quest objective, although the quest itself asks you to complete three Glide de Chocobo challenges.
- Push the minecart along its rails while staying behind cover.
- Hide whenever the watching chocobos turn toward you.
- Pull levers to change the cart’s route, then throw rocks near the final approach.
- Reach Aponi from behind and press Triangle.
Aponi glides only from marked industrial fans, Glider Ranges and wind terminals. Hold R2 during the glide, as described by GameSpot. She is not an endlessly flying mount, and the launch hardware is required for meaningful distance.
Nibel: luring Selena through the cacti
Chapter 11’s Nibel Chocobo Intel is near Activation Tower 1 and the airstrip; another approach is the spiky-plant field to the right of the road toward Nibelheim. Selena is obtained by baiting rather than hiding.

- Throw bait to make Selena follow a route between the inflating cactus-like plants.
- Wait for each plant to deflate before sending her toward the next checkpoint.
- At the end of the course, tame Selena and mount her.
A missed checkpoint can force an almost one-minute wait before another attempt, according to GameSkinny. Selena’s Chocojet fires a water stream from her claws. Over water it provides the greatest lift and can reach island caves; over dry ground it still hovers, but not as high. Gameranx notes that Nibel ranch rewards include collecting 50 tufts of Chocograss with this ability.
What controls do chocobos use?
The cited guides use the PlayStation control layout; DualSense controls on PC match it, while keyboard and mouse bindings can be remapped.
- Call regional bird: R1.
- Catch, mount or raise a fallen Stop sign: Triangle (hold when repairing).
- Sniff for buried treasure: hold D-pad Up when a question mark appears.
- Face the scent: press R3.
- Excavate: D-pad Down.
- Dash: use the assigned analog/dash control.
- Special terrain action: press the context action; Cosmo Canyon gliding uses R2 hold.
All six regional birds share Scent and Scour. When the sniff prompt appears, follow the scent direction and excavate to uncover buried items or complete Excavation Intel.
Can I take my chocobo to the next region?
No. Each region has its own bird, and R1 always calls the native mount where you are standing. A Grasslands bird will not answer in Junon, and Belle will not appear in Corel or Gongaga. GamingBolt, GGRecon and Game8 all describe this regional lock.

The first inter-region shortcut is the chocobo carriage. Complete Stuck in a Rut to open the service at both Gabe’s Ranch and Bill’s Ranch, then pay 300 gil to skip the Mythril Mines between Grasslands and Junon. Ordinary map fast travel is otherwise intra-region: it connects unlocked landmarks, caches and repaired Chocobo Stops, not an unearned cross-region bird summon.

How do Chocobo Stops and Golden Plumes work?
Baby chocobos lead you to rundown stops. A fallen sign can be repaired by holding Triangle; the repair awards one Golden Plume and converts the stop into a fast-travel point. PowerPyx lists 48 stops total: eight in each of the six regions. None are missable.
You may sit on the bench without fixing the sign, but resting consumes a Cushion. Rebirth does not retain the free rest-anywhere benches from the earlier remake. Golden Plumes are spent at ranch Chocoboutiques on Chocobo Gear. The gear is cosmetic during open-world travel and supplies stat boosts for Chocobo Racing, which unlocks in Chapter 9.
Repairing at least three stops unlocks the I Brake for Chocobos trophy, according to PowerPyx. After the story, Chapter Select can replay Chapter 13 while leaving the full open world accessible for cleanup.
Which mounts are not overworld chocobos?
Several vehicles solve travel problems that a regional bird cannot.
- Buggy: the South Corel desert, sandy debris and shallow water; faster than chocobos, but large and unsummonable.
- Wheelie: Costa del Sol’s resort area only.
- Tiny Bronco: Cid’s seaplane, used for distant locations and water landings at old airstrips.
- Mecha-Chocobo: a Gold Saucer racing bird from Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop, not a seventh regional mount.
Which platforms support Final Fantasy VII Rebirth?
Square Enix’s FAQ, accessed October 29, 2026, lists PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. The PC specification lists a 155 GB SSD and 16 GB of memory at every listed preset. DualSense is supported on PC, with keyboard and mouse remapping available. Square Enix also states that no post-launch DLC is planned.

How were the six mounts and travel rules determined?
The regional list follows the game’s six open-world zones and the unlock conditions reported by the cited 2024 guides. The comparison separates the quest or chapter, capture method, unique terrain action and region lock, because those are the rules that determine whether a mount is useful at a given destination. Where guides disagree on color, the article uses the game’s functional type—Mountain, Jungle, Sky or Ocean—alongside the commonly reported plumage.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I miss a regional chocobo and return later?
No regional bird is missable. Story mounts become available through their required chapters, and the ranch or Intel encounters remain available for later exploration; Chapter Select after the story also restores access to the open world for cleanup.
Why does Selena sometimes barely rise with Chocojet?
The Chocojet’s maximum lift depends on having water directly below Selena. On dry land the hover still functions, but it reaches a lower height, so use it for controlled descent rather than expecting a full launch.
Do Chocobo Gear bonuses improve normal exploration?
The gear purchased with Golden Plumes is cosmetic during open-world riding. Its stat benefits apply to Chocobo Racing, which becomes available in Chapter 9, rather than making a regional bird climb, glide or cross a new region.
What save-data bonuses are tied to earlier Final Fantasy VII games?
Square Enix lists the Leviathan summon for save data from Final Fantasy VII Remake and the Ramuh summon for Episode INTERmission save data. These are separate from the regional chocobo unlocks and do not add another mount.
