What this file actually does
FFMS2 uses FFmpeg and related media components to open and decode video and audio for editing, filtering, indexing, and frame-accurate access. It provides plugins for AviSynth and VapourSynth and may also be bundled inside a video editor, encoder, subtitle tool, or launcher.

- The application’s own folder, beside its executable
- The application’s plugin directory
- An AviSynth plugin directory
- A VapourSynth package directory
- A private folder bundled with an editor or encoder
It does not normally belong in C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64. The program that reports the error determines which copy is needed.

Match the symptom to the likely cause

The supplied file details showing version 0.0.0.0 and a particular size do not identify a universal FFMS2 build. Different hosts can package different versions, dependencies, and architectures.
Fix 1: Identify the program that is failing
Do this before downloading or replacing anything.
- Write down the exact application named in the error window.
- Close that application.
- If the message appeared while opening a project, note which editor, encoder, subtitle tool, or script host opened the project.
- Check the shortcut or launcher:
- Right-click the shortcut.
- Select Properties.
- Read the Target field.
- Open the target folder by right-clicking the shortcut and choosing Open file location.
- Look for the application executable and any
plugins,runtime,bin, or similarly named folder.
If the message appears while running a script, the calling program may be an AviSynth or VapourSynth host rather than the video application you first opened. Multiple AviSynth installations can have separate plugin directories, and an AviSynth 32-bit plugin does not automatically serve AviSynth+ 64-bit.
Determine whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit
Do not infer the answer from the Windows installation.

For a running program:
- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading and choose Select columns if needed.
- Enable Platform.
- Check the failing program’s entry.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with 32 bit or *32. If Task Manager does not show a platform column, check the application’s documentation or installer. The FFMS2 package must match the host process, not merely the operating system.
Fix 2: Repair or reinstall the host application
This is the safest and most likely solution because the host may require a specific FFMS2 build and its companion libraries.
Use Windows repair
For a normal Windows desktop application:
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the video application, editor, encoder, subtitle tool, AviSynth package, or VapourSynth installation named in the error.
- Select the three-dot menu.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again and repeat the action that produced the error.
If Repair is unavailable or does not help, return to the same page and use Reset only if you understand that it may remove application settings. Otherwise uninstall and reinstall the application from its official installer.
For a traditional desktop installer:
- Open Control Panel.
- Select Programs > Programs and Features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Repair or Change if available.
- If neither option exists, uninstall it.
- Restart Windows.
- Download the current installer from the application developer or use the installer you originally verified.
- Install the same architecture as the host that will use it.
A successful repair usually restores the plugin to the application’s expected directory and removes the error without any manual DLL registration. If the program starts but a script still fails, the host may be loading a different AviSynth or VapourSynth installation.

When the manual repair process becomes a cycle of hunting package versions and repeating SFC/DISM without knowing what changed, Outbyte PC Repair can scan for system problems and show what it identifies; repair actions are handled by the full version. It is optional, and reinstalling the specific video application remains the definitive fix for an app-bundled FFMS2 file.
Fix 3: Install the matching FFMS2 package
Use the FFMS2 project’s official release repository or the package source documented by the host application. Prefer a complete package over a standalone DLL.
Before installing:
- Confirm whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Check whether the application expects AviSynth or VapourSynth.
- Read the host’s installation instructions.
- Remove or rename only the broken plugin copy if the application documentation tells you to do so.
- Install the package into the documented plugin directory.
Do not replace a working older plugin with the newest upstream release blindly. FFMS2 releases can change FFmpeg compatibility and plugin behavior, and an older host may require the version bundled with it.
VapourSynth installation
VapourSynth has its own package mechanism. Open Command Prompt or the terminal supplied with your VapourSynth installation and run:
vsrepo install ffms2
Then:
- Close and reopen the VapourSynth host.
- Run the script or open the media file again.
- Confirm that the script can import or load FFMS2.
If the command is not recognized, you are probably using a terminal that cannot see the VapourSynth installation, or the package manager was not installed. Use the terminal or environment documented by your VapourSynth distribution. Installing an AviSynth plugin will not necessarily repair VapourSynth.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can remove or quarantine a plugin after an update or scan. Do not assume this happened; verify it.
For Microsoft Defender:
- Open Start and search for Windows Security.
- Open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Look for an event involving
ffms2.dllor the affected application. - Check the file path and detection details.
Restore the file only if it came from a trusted, verified application package. If the source is unknown, leave it quarantined and reinstall the application or FFMS2 package from its official source. After reinstalling, update the security product and rescan the application folder.
Random DLL download sites websites are unsafe sources. A downloaded file can contain malware, target the wrong architecture, use an incompatible build, or omit the dependencies that caused the failure. It can also conceal the fact that the host installation is damaged.

Fix 5: Repair a separately named dependency
“The specified module could not be found” does not always mean that ffms2.dll itself is absent. Windows can show the name of the DLL that the application attempted to load even when a dependency of that DLL is the real missing module.
Read the complete error carefully. If it names a file such as VCRUNTIME140.dll or MSVCP140.dll:
- Determine whether the calling host is 32-bit or 64-bit.
- Download the matching Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable from Microsoft.
- Use
vc_redist.x86.exefor a 32-bit host. - Use
vc_redist.x64.exefor a 64-bit host. - On 64-bit Windows, install both only when you have both 32-bit and 64-bit applications that require them.
- Restart the affected application.
Do not assume every FFMS2 build requires the latest Visual C++ package. Some packages include their runtime dependencies, while others rely on installed Microsoft components.
If the error names another FFmpeg, zlib, or application library, reinstall the complete FFMS2 or host package rather than downloading that dependency separately.
Fix 6: Check the plugin directory and duplicate installations
A correct DLL in the wrong directory is still unusable.
- Open the host application’s settings or documentation.
- Find its plugin, script, or package directory.
- Confirm that the installed FFMS2 variant is inside that directory.
- Check for duplicate AviSynth, AviSynth+, or VapourSynth installations.
- Remove stale plugin references only through the host’s documented configuration.
- Restart the host and test again.
Do not add random directories to the Windows PATH unless the application specifically requires it. Do not copy the file into System32, SysWOW64, a game folder, or another unrelated application folder. That can create version conflicts, load the wrong architecture, or allow an untrusted binary to be used.
Fix 7: Do not use regsvr32 for FFMS2
regsvr32 is for DLL components that expose registration entry points, commonly COM or ActiveX components. FFMS2 is normally a media plugin or library, not a COM server.

Running commands such as these is therefore not a normal repair:
regsvr32 ffms2.dll
regsvr32 /u ffms2.dll
A registration error does not prove that FFMS2 is damaged. Put the plugin in the host’s documented location and reinstall its complete package instead.

ffms2.dll is not normally a protected Windows component, so System File Checker will not usually restore it. Use these tools when Windows has broader corruption symptoms, built-in applications are failing, or Microsoft components are also damaged.
- Open Start.
- Search for Command Prompt.
- Right-click it and select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for it to finish.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows.
- Repair or reinstall the affected video application again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC. If both commands report no problems but FFMS2 still fails, return to the host application and its plugin package rather than repeating system repairs.

A display or media driver is not the usual cause of a missing ffms2.dll. Update drivers only if the same application also crashes during decoding, shows rendering failures, or reports a graphics or hardware acceleration error.
To check manually:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters.
- Right-click the graphics device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if a driver is installed.
For audio-related failures, repeat the process under Sound, video and game controllers. If Windows finds nothing, use the hardware manufacturer’s official support page. Do not expect a driver update to restore a missing plugin file.

- The exact application and executable that fails
- The complete error text
- Whether the host is 32-bit or 64-bit
- The FFMS2 package variant and version
- The plugin directory being searched
- Any separately named missing dependency
- Whether antivirus quarantine shows an event
- Whether the failure began after an application or Windows update
Use a dependency inspection tool to identify missing libraries, or send this information to the application developer. If the failure began immediately after an update, reinstall the host’s matching plugin version rather than replacing it with an unrelated newer DLL.
FAQ
Is ffms2.dll part of Windows?
No. It is a third-party FFMS2 multimedia plugin used by applications such as AviSynth, VapourSynth, and video-processing software.
Should I download ffms2.dll by itself?
No. Use the host application’s official installer, its documented package manager, or the FFMS2 project’s official release package. A standalone DLL may be malicious, incompatible, or incomplete.
Do I need the 64-bit file because Windows is 64-bit?
Not necessarily. Match the plugin to the application process. A 32-bit host needs the 32-bit FFMS2 build even on 64-bit Windows.

Should I copy it into System32?
No. Application plugins belong with the application or in its documented plugin directory. System32 copying usually does not fix the host’s search path.
Will regsvr32 repair it?
Normally no. FFMS2 is not generally a registered COM or ActiveX component.
Why does Windows say a module is missing when the file is present?
A dependent library may be missing, the architecture may be wrong, or the host may not search the directory containing FFMS2. Reinstall the complete matching package and inspect the full error.
