Start with this diagnostic checklist
Before replacing anything, establish what is actually failing:
- Which action triggers the error? File History maintenance, Windows startup, an application, or a game?
- Does the message name File History? A File History failure points toward Windows servicing. A named application may have a separate problem.
- Is the error “missing,” “not found,” “could not be loaded,” or “not designed to run on Windows”?
- Did it begin after an update, rollback, cleanup, antivirus quarantine, malware incident, or disk problem?
- Is the Windows installation 32-bit or 64-bit? Press
Windows key + R, typemsinfo32, and check System Type.
fhtask.dll is a genuine Microsoft Windows component called File History Task Handler. If Windows reports that fhtask.dll is missing or cannot load, repair Windows rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

What fhtask.dll is and where it belongs
fhtask.dll belongs to the Microsoft Windows operating system. It is associated with File History, the Windows feature that backs up personal files to an external drive or network location and lets you restore earlier versions.

What the error messages mean
Common messages include:
- “The program can’t start because fhtask.dll is missing from your computer.”
- “This application failed to start because fhtask.dll was not found.”
- “Error loading fhtask.dll.”
- “The specified module could not be found.”
- “The procedure entry point could not be located in the dynamic link library fhtask.dll.”
- “fhtask.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error.”
These messages do not all mean the same thing.
The file may be absent
Windows may have lost or quarantined the protected system file. This can follow filesystem corruption, an incomplete update, a failed rollback, or security software intervention.
A dependency may be missing
“Specified module could not be found” can mean that fhtask.dll exists but another file it needs cannot load. A visible DLL is therefore not proof that the component is healthy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe file may be incompatible
An older or wrong-architecture copy can cause an entry-point or “not designed to run on Windows” message. Copying a 32-bit or older build into a 64-bit Windows installation can make the problem worse.
The error may be unrelated to File History
If a particular application displays the message, first check whether Windows File History is also failing. A program can report a Windows DLL error while the underlying fault is an application installation, permissions problem, or damaged Windows component store.
Fix 1: Install updates and restart
Pending updates are the quickest safe repair to try, especially if the error began after an interrupted update or rollback.
- Press
Windows key + Ito open Settings. - Select Windows Update.
- Choose Check for updates.
- Install all available updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not immediately request a restart.
- Repeat the check until Windows reports that it is up to date.
- Reproduce the action that caused the error.
On Windows 10, the same controls are under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.

Fix 2: Repair Windows with DISM and SFC
Microsoft recommends running DISM before System File Checker because DISM can repair the component store that SFC uses as its repair source. Use an elevated Command Prompt and run both commands in this order.

- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- Select Yes at the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window because progress may pause for some time.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart the computer.
- Test File History or the application that displayed the error.
A successful result may say that DISM restored the component store or that SFC found and repaired corrupt files. If SFC repaired files, the restart is important because Windows may not use the repaired component until the next boot.
If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, run the commands once more after restarting. If the result is unchanged, continue to the repair-source section below.
Running these commands manually requires waiting through each scan and interpreting the result. Outbyte PC Repair can scan for the problem and show what needs attention; its repair functions require the full version, and it is not required for this Windows repair. For fhtask.dll, Windows servicing remains the definitive repair path.
Fix 3: Use a matching Windows repair source
DISM normally obtains repair files through Windows Update. If that source is unavailable or damaged, use a matching Windows installation source.
Microsoft documents this form:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace C:RepairSourceWindows with the path to the Windows folder in your repair source.
The source must match the installed Windows version closely enough for servicing. Do not use a random Windows folder from another computer, an older installation, or a different architecture merely because it contains a file with the same name.
After DISM completes, run:
sfc /scannow
Restart and test again. If you do not have a matching repair source, use Windows recovery or a repair installation rather than guessing at individual DLL files.
Fix 4: Check the file path and digital signature
If fhtask.dll appears to exist, verify that it is the correct file.
- Open File Explorer.
- Paste this path into the address bar:
%SystemRoot%System32
- Look for
fhtask.dll. - Right-click it and choose Properties.
- Open the Digital Signatures tab.
- Inspect the signer and signature status.
The expected location is under the Windows system directory, normally C:WindowsSystem32. A same-named file in Downloads, a temporary folder, a user profile, or an application directory is not equivalent.
If the signature is missing, invalid, or the file is outside the Windows system directory:

- The available storage capacity may vary.
- Do not run it.
- Do not copy it into
System32. - Run a full scan with Windows Security or your organization’s approved security product.
- Run DISM and SFC after the scan.
If antivirus software quarantined the file, review its quarantine history. Restore it only when the original path, Microsoft signature, and Windows build are consistent. Do not disable protection simply to copy a replacement.
Fix 5: Check File History itself
If the error appears during a backup, confirm that File History’s destination is available.
For an external drive:
- Reconnect the drive directly to the computer.
- Avoid using a failing hub or intermittently powered enclosure.
- Open Control Panel.
- Select System and Security > File History.
- Choose Run now if that option is available.
For a network location:
- Confirm that the computer can reach the network.
- Open Control Panel > System and Security > File History.
- Select Select drive.
- Choose the correct network location again.
- Run File History.
If File History works after the drive or network location is restored, the original message may have involved the backup destination rather than a permanently missing fhtask.dll.
File History protects and restores personal files. It does not repair Windows system components. Use DISM and SFC for the DLL problem itself.

Fix 6: Check Windows Features only when the error points there
fhtask.dll is not a normal optional runtime that should be installed from a separate package. Do not enable unrelated Windows Features in the hope that one will add the file.
You can still check whether a broader Windows feature installation failed:
- Press
Windows key + R. - Type:
optionalfeatures
- Press Enter.
- Review the Windows Features list without changing unrelated items.
- If a feature named in the original error is unchecked, enable it and restart.
- If Windows reports that feature installation failed, return to DISM and SFC rather than searching for a DLL.
Fix 7: Check Device Manager and storage health when repairs keep failing
Drivers do not normally provide fhtask.dll, but a storage, filesystem, or controller problem can repeatedly damage Windows components.
- Right-click Start and choose Device Manager.
- Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, and IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, if present.
- Look for a warning icon.
- Right-click a device and choose Properties.
- Review the General and Events tabs.
- Install drivers only from Windows Update, the computer manufacturer, or the hardware manufacturer.
- Restart and run DISM and SFC again.
Do not use Device Manager’s Uninstall device option unless you know how Windows will reinstall that hardware and you have a recovery plan.

Manually identifying the correct storage and chipset driver can involve hunting through hardware IDs and comparing several packages. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan and identify stale drivers; its driver installation requires the full version, and it is not required for every fhtask.dll error.
If disk errors, unexpected shutdowns, or repeated repair failures are present, back up personal data and investigate disk health before continuing.

Fix 8: Use System Restore or a repair installation
Use System Restore when the problem began after a recent update, driver change, cleanup operation, or system modification.
- Open Start and search for Create a restore point.
- Open it.
- Select System Restore.
- Choose a restore point dated before the error began.
- Review affected programs and drivers.
- Start the restore and let Windows restart.
System Restore can revert system files, applications, settings, and registry state. Changes made after the selected restore point can be lost, so back up important data first.
If no suitable restore point exists and DISM still cannot repair Windows, perform a Windows repair installation using a matching official Windows installation source. Follow Microsoft’s installation and recovery guidance for your edition and architecture. A repair installation is preferable to copying individual files because it restores Windows components as a consistent set.
A full reset or reinstall is the last resort. Back up user data and confirm that you have the required account access, application installers, and activation information before choosing it.

regsvr32 is not a general DLL repair command. It is intended for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer.
Even if a system DLL contains registration-related functionality, that does not establish that manually registering it is the correct repair. Running commands such as these can produce a misleading error or alter registration without repairing the underlying component:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →regsvr32 fhtask.dll
regsvr32 C:WindowsSystem32fhtask.dll
Do not use regsvr32 for a missing, corrupt, incompatible, or dependency-related fhtask.dll error unless Microsoft or a qualified administrator has specifically identified a registration problem.
Why random DLL downloads are unsafe
There is no legitimate Microsoft fhtask.dll redistributable package for ordinary users. Avoid DLL download sites and do not copy a file into System32, SysWOW64, or an application folder.
A downloaded DLL may:
- Contain malware or unwanted modifications.
- Be for a different Windows build.
- Have the wrong 32-bit or 64-bit architecture.
- Have different dependencies or exports.
- Lack a valid Microsoft signature.
- Hide the component-store or filesystem problem that caused the error.
The safe sources are Windows Update, Windows servicing, a matching official Windows repair source, or System Restore. Manual copying from another PC is not a normal fix and should only be considered as an advanced recovery step after SFC identifies a specific unrepaired file and the source computer has the same Windows edition, build, architecture, and language.

If the error continues
Use this escalation order:
- Confirm the trigger: File History maintenance or a separate application.
- Check
%SystemRoot%System32fhtask.dlland its digital signature. - Review antivirus quarantine and run a full security scan.
- Install updates and restart.
- Run DISM, then SFC.
- Use a matching repair source if DISM cannot obtain files.
- Check Event Viewer and disk health if repairs repeatedly fail.
- Try System Restore.
- Use a Windows repair installation before considering a clean reinstall.
If only one third-party application reports the error while File History works normally, repair or reinstall that application from its official installer after Windows servicing is healthy. Do not assume the application owns fhtask.dll; it may simply be surfacing a Windows component failure.
