Manchester City begin a FIFA 19 Career Mode save with a strong first team, a midfield built to control possession and dangerous wide attackers. A practical starting point is the default 4-3-3 holding shape: keep Fernandinho behind Kevin De Bruyne and David Silva, then use Raheem Sterling and Leroy Sané to support Sergio Agüero. From there, rotate for the packed schedule, develop promising younger players and decide whether to spend on a left-back or plan ahead for Fernandinho’s role.
How strong is Manchester City in FIFA 19?
FIFA Index lists Manchester City at 85 overall in its FIFA 19 team database, with 86 attack, 88 midfield and 82 defence. These are FIFA 19 game ratings, not measures of the real club. The same database lists Kevin De Bruyne at 91 overall, David Silva at 90 and Sergio Agüero at 89; Leroy Sané is listed at 86 overall with 92 potential. FIFA Index’s FIFA 19 Manchester City page is a database reference rather than an EA or club rating publication.

RealSport101’s 21 February 2019 guide gives a starting transfer budget of £168 million and weekly wage budget of £305,000. FIFA Index displays a €170 million transfer budget. The sources do not explain the difference, so treat each as a separately attributed figure rather than converting or combining them.

Which formation should you use?
Start with 4-3-3 holding
RealSport101’s 2019 guide recommends keeping City’s default 4-3-3 holding formation. It puts Fernandinho at the base of midfield, with De Bruyne and Silva ahead of him. This gives the two creators room to link play with the wingers while retaining a dedicated defensive midfielder.

Consider these alternatives when you want more attack
- 4-3-2-1: an attacking alternative listed by RealSport101; it keeps three central midfielders while bringing the forward support closer together.
- 4-5-1 attack: another option from the guide when you want an attacking setup built around a lone striker and midfield support.
- 3-5-2: the guide’s more aggressive alternative, trading the conventional back four for a three-player defence and a more crowded midfield.
These are the guide’s suggestions, not a guarantee that one formation is best for every opponent or play style. FIFA 19’s Dynamic Tactics allow players to set up deeper squad plans; EA describes the feature as enabling “deeper and more accessible squad setups.” EA’s FIFA 19 gameplay feature overview also names Active Touch, 50/50 Battles and Timed Finishing, but does not prescribe a City formation.
What starting lineup does the 2019 guide recommend?
RealSport101’s recommended FIFA 19 XI is:
| Position | Player |
|---|---|
| Goalkeeper | Ederson |
| Right back | Kyle Walker |
| Centre back | Vincent Kompany |
| Centre back | Nicolás Otamendi |
| Left back | Benjamin Mendy |
| Defensive midfield | Fernandinho |
| Central midfield | Kevin De Bruyne |
| Central midfield | David Silva |
| Right wing | Raheem Sterling |
| Left wing | Leroy Sané |
| Striker | Sergio Agüero |
The XI and its player assessments reflect the guide’s FIFA 19 roster and data, not later editions. The guide’s lineup makes the club’s central strength clear: Fernandinho protects the defence while De Bruyne and Silva can feed Sterling and Sané on either side of Agüero.
How should you set up the midfield and wingers?
Against a deep defence
RealSport101 suggests changing De Bruyne’s and Silva’s attacking support from “get forward” to “balanced attack” against opponents who sit deep. The intent is to keep both creators involved in circulation rather than having them push forward too readily. Treat this as a situational instruction to try, not a tested guarantee.
When crossing to the forwards
For Sterling, the guide recommends “balanced width” for chance creation and “get into the box for cross” as crossing support. It says the same box-arrival instruction can be considered for Sané. These settings suit a plan that uses the wingers to attack the area around Agüero, but adjust them if you want the wide players to hold their positions or receive the ball outside the box.

Who should you train, loan or rotate?
Training priorities
RealSport101 names Bernardo Silva, Sané, Gabriel Jesus, Mendy and Phil Foden as training priorities in its 2019 guide. FIFA Index lists Sané at 86 overall and 92 potential in FIFA 19; do not read that game-specific potential as a current player projection.
Loan candidates
The same guide identifies Eric Garcia and Claudio Gomes as possible loan players, citing potential of at least 81 in its FIFA 19 data. A loan can give a young player room for development while the established XI handles the strongest fixtures; check each player’s role and development in your save before committing.
Rotation across competitions
The guide emphasizes rotating the squad because City compete across several tournaments. It describes four competitions, or five when the Community Shield is included; the count depends on the save’s competition setup. Use the depth beyond the preferred XI to manage fatigue and preserve options for cup and league matches rather than relying on the same eleven throughout.
Should you make transfers in the first season?
Left back: keep Mendy or buy cover?
RealSport101 calls left back the weakest position in its suggested XI, but says Mendy has FIFA 19 potential of 86. That makes an experienced replacement a choice, not an automatic first-season requirement: keeping Mendy prioritizes his development, while signing cover can address short-term reliability if your budget and preferred approach allow it. The guide does not give a comparable price for a replacement, so there is no supported cost comparison to make.

Defensive midfield: plan for Fernandinho’s successor
The guide frames Fernandinho’s role as a longer-term succession need and lists Frenkie de Jong, Tanguy Ndombele, Danilo Pereira, Wilfred Ndidi, Morgan Sanson and Abdoulaye Doucouré as possible alternatives. They are names from a 2019 FIFA 19 guide, not current transfer recommendations. The source does not provide comparable transfer costs or development figures for these options, so choose based on the role you need and the information available in your save.
Centre-back and squad decisions
RealSport101 recommends retaining Vincent Kompany for another one or two seasons despite uncertainty about whether he will be a regular starter. It also suggests selling Eliaquim Mangala and Tom Dele-Bashiru. These are dated editorial recommendations; consider your own squad needs and the offers you receive before acting.
What Career Mode objectives should you expect?
RealSport101 reports that City’s in-game objectives include domestic success, winning the Champions League, shirt-sales targets and youth-development requirements. Objectives can depend on game setup or source version, so check the objectives shown in your own save rather than treating that list as universal.
