Charlie INTEL’s October 31, 2023 guide recommends the specific slider values and player instructions below; treat them as one published preset, not a proven universal best.
What the 4-2-3-1 formation does
The formation uses four defenders, two defensive midfielders, three attacking midfielders and one striker. The CDMs screen the center-backs, while the attacking midfielders offer passing options behind the striker. The advanced line can also provide width depending on the variant and player instructions. Its appeal is the balance between central protection and attacking combinations. You can preserve cover by keeping both fullbacks back, or raise the risk by advancing a holding midfielder when you need a goal. Asking the CAM to track back is another way to crowd midfield. Those adjustments change the shape’s risk profile; they do not guarantee a particular result.

Player instructions
- Left back and right back: Stay Back While Attacking.
- Both CDMs: Cover Center. Set one to Stay Back While Attacking and the other to Balanced.
- CAM: Stay Forward and Get Into the Box for Crosses.
- Striker: Stay Forward and Get In Behind.
The guide does not specify special instructions for the wide attacking midfielders, center-backs or goalkeeper, so they are not part of this preset.
How other FIFA 23 presets differ
Published recommendations vary. These alternatives help show what changes when you want a different defensive line, build-up pace, box presence or defensive workload; they are not evidence that one setup wins more matches. To adapt rather than copy a preset blindly, change one or two settings at a time and judge the result in your own mode and play style. The sources do not document a controlled test of that adjustment method or a measured win-rate comparison.

Epic Games Store wrote in July 2023 that the competitive meta had “swung towards a 4-2-3-1.” That is a dated observation, not a current competitive ranking. None of these sources establishes an independently measured formation win rate, a controlled comparison or a guaranteed improvement. Epic Games Store cautions that no formation guarantees a “20-0 FUT” run, and FifaUltimateTeam.it notes that its tactics cannot fit every player’s style. These are recommendations, not outcome statistics.
The advice is specific to FIFA 23 and comes from the game’s 2022–2023 era; FifaUltimateTeam.it says it adjusts tactics as patches arrive and identifies Title Update 4 as its latest test. Do not assume these slider values carry over to later EA Sports FC games. EA’s official FIFA 23 gameplay notes also describe a Deep Lying Playmaker instruction that lets midfielders consistently ask for the ball and gravitate toward ball handlers, but specify that it can only be applied to CDMs. That mechanic is context, not an instruction included in the baseline above.
