EA announced cross-play for selected modes, women’s club teams and two post-launch World Cup updates, but cross-play was limited by console generation and co-op rules. The game launched worldwide on September 30, 2022. Whether its online modes still work in 2026 is not established here, so treat any online-dependent reason to play or buy it as requiring a current service check.
What FIFA 23 offered at launch
EA released FIFA 23 worldwide on September 30, 2022, for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC and Stadia. Its launch lineup included Ultimate Team (FUT), Career Mode and VOLTA FOOTBALL. EA also announced FUT Moments, a scenario-based challenge mode; a refreshed chemistry system intended to give squad builders more flexibility; updates to Player and Manager Career, including playable highlights; and a shared entry point for Pro Clubs and VOLTA. EA listed more than 300 partners, 19,000 players, 700 teams, 100 stadiums and 30 leagues. Those are publisher-provided scale figures, rather than independently audited counts. EA announced that FIFA 23 would include women’s club teams from the Barclays Women’s Super League and France’s Division 1 Arkema at launch. It also announced modes for the men’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 and the FIFA Women’s World Cup Australia and New Zealand 2023. EA’s July announcement gave its licensed-football scale as more than 19,000 players across more than 700 teams, in over 100 stadiums and more than 30 leagues. Cross-play: useful, but limited by platform and mode
FIFA 23 cross-play connected players only within the same platform generation, and only in selected modes. EA grouped PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Stadia and PC together; PlayStation 4 and Xbox One made up the other group. Owning FIFA 23 on a newer console did not let you cross-play with someone on the previous-generation version. EA’s cross-play announcement

EA’s listed cross-play modes were FUT Division Rivals (excluding co-op), FUT Champions, FUT Ultimate Online Draft, FUT Online Friendlies (excluding co-op), FUT Play a Friend, Online Friendlies, Online Seasons (excluding co-op seasons), and Virtual Bundesliga for players in Germany. EA’s FUT notes described support for 1v1 modes, not 2v2 co-op. Pro Clubs did not support cross-play at launch; EA’s announcement said, “Pro Clubs will not feature cross-play at this time.” That is a statement about the 2022 launch, not confirmation of later changes. FUT Transfer Market pools are a separate issue
Cross-play and the FUT Transfer Market are not the same thing. EA described one shared market pool for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Stadia; PC and Nintendo Switch each had a separate market. Platform versions differ in a material way
HyperMotion2 was specified for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Stadia—not for every platform listed at launch. If that technology is part of why you are considering the game, confirm the exact platform edition rather than assuming the PS4 or Xbox One version has feature parity with newer-platform versions. For offline play, FIFA 23 may still appeal if you want its launch-era modes, licensed teams and leagues, women’s club football, or the World Cup content. The launch information establishes that those features were announced, but it cannot tell you whether the game’s football, presentation or career systems will suit your tastes.

For online play, the decision is less straightforward. The present status of FUT, Online Seasons, Pro Clubs and other online modes is not established here as of October 8, 2026. Before buying or reinstalling it for online use, check EA’s current service information for the specific mode and platform; do not rely on old claims about shutdown dates or assume a launch feature remains available. Overall, the launch feature set makes FIFA 23 a substantial entry in the series, especially for players interested in its breadth of modes and women’s football additions. But “review” should not be mistaken for a firsthand gameplay verdict: the available evidence supports launch facts and EA’s feature descriptions, not an independent score or current online-service guarantee.
