“This application failed to start because xpsfilt.dll was not found.” Other messages include “The file xpsfilt.dll is missing or corrupted,” “Error loading xpsfilt.dll,” and “The specified module could not be found.”
xpsfilt.dll is normally a legitimate Microsoft Windows component: the XML Paper Specification Document IFilter. It helps Windows Search and related document-processing features extract text and properties from XPS-family documents. Repair the Windows component or the application reporting the error rather than downloading a replacement DLL.

Which fix applies to you
Use the situation that matches what you can see:
- If the error appears in Windows Search, indexing, XPS handling, or a Windows feature, start with DISM and SFC.
- If you only need to open
.xpsor.oxpsfiles, check whether XPS Viewer is installed. - If one third-party program reports the error while Windows otherwise works normally, repair or reinstall that program from its official installer.
- If the problem began after an update, cleanup, restore, disk problem, or interrupted repair, check Windows Update and repair the component store.
- If antivirus quarantined the file, inspect its protection history before restoring anything.
- If the message says the module could not be found even though
xpsfilt.dllexists, the missing item may be a dependency rather than this DLL. - If only one user account is affected, test another account before making broad system changes.
- If the error occurs during printing, investigate the printer application and driver separately.
xpsfilt.dllis not ordinarily a printer-driver redistributable.
What xpsfilt.dll does
An IFilter is a component that extracts searchable text and document properties for Windows indexing. Microsoft documents the IFilter interface and lists Windows-supplied filter handlers, including support for XPS-related documents, in its Windows filter-handler documentation.
XPS is Microsoft’s fixed-layout document technology. Its relationship with printing can make the filename appear in a print-related workflow, but that does not make xpsfilt.dll a printer driver. Microsoft describes XPS documents separately in its XPS documentation.

On many Windows installations, the expected 64-bit system location is:
%SystemRoot%System32xpsfilt.dll
A 32-bit copy on 64-bit Windows may be associated with:
%SystemRoot%SysWOW64xpsfilt.dll
Those directories have different purposes. System32 commonly contains 64-bit system files on 64-bit Windows, while SysWOW64 contains 32-bit system files. The exact presence, version, and location depend on the Windows edition, architecture, build, servicing state, and installed components.

What the error actually means
A missing-file message can indicate several different failures:
- The file was deleted, quarantined, or never installed correctly.
- The file exists but is corrupted.
- Windows has an inconsistent component store after a failed update or repair.
- A 32-bit or 64-bit program is looking in the wrong location.
- A dependent DLL is missing.
- A third-party application has an incorrect DLL search path.
- XPS or indexing functionality is damaged or incompletely installed.
“ The specified module could not be found” does not prove that xpsfilt.dll itself is absent. Windows may be unable to load a dependency required by it. Likewise, “not designed to run on Windows” can mean a mismatched architecture, damaged binary, incompatible build, or invalid file.
Before repairing, note what changed immediately before the error. Consider a Windows update, system restore, disk failure, aggressive cleanup utility, antivirus detection, feature removal, or installation of a third-party program.

Install updates and restart
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install all applicable updates.
- Restart Windows, even if it does not explicitly require a restart.
- Reproduce the error once.
If the error remains, continue with the component repair.
Run DISM, then SFC
- Open Start.
- Type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and select Run as administrator.
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
- Wait for DISM to finish. Do not close the window while it is working.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Restart Windows after SFC completes.
- Test the same search, XPS, or application operation again.
Microsoft recommends running DISM before SFC because DISM repairs the Windows component store that SFC uses as a source for protected system files. The supported procedure is documented in Microsoft’s System File Checker repair instructions.
Success means the error no longer appears and the affected Windows function works normally. SFC may report that it found no integrity violations, repaired corrupted files, or found files it could not repair. Record the result rather than repeatedly running the same command without investigating what changed.

If DISM cannot find repair files
If DISM fails because it cannot obtain source files through Windows Update:
- Confirm that Windows Update is working.
- Restart the computer.
- Run DISM again.
- If it still fails, use a matching Windows installation or repair source:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess
Replace the example path with the actual repair source. The source must closely match the installed Windows edition and build. Do not point DISM at an arbitrary image from another release.
After DISM succeeds, run:
sfc /scannow
Then restart and test again. Microsoft also provides guidance for troubleshooting Windows Update.
Fix 2: Install XPS Viewer only if viewing XPS files is the problem
XPS Viewer is an optional Windows feature on supported releases. It is relevant when you need to open .xps or .oxps documents. Installing it is not a universal repair for every xpsfilt.dll load error.
Install it through Settings
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select Optional features.
- Select View features.
- Search for XPS Viewer.
- Select it, choose Next, and select Install.
- Restart if Windows requests it.
- Open the XPS document again.
Availability and installation behavior vary by Windows release and policy configuration. If XPS Viewer is not listed, the feature may be unavailable to the current edition, restricted by organizational policy, or dependent on Windows Update.

Install it with DISM
From an administrator Command Prompt, run:
DISM /Online /Add-Capability /CapabilityName:XPS.Viewer~~~~0.0.1.0
Restart Windows and test an .xps or .oxps file. Microsoft community guidance documents this XPS Viewer capability.
If the capability installation fails, repair Windows Update and run the DISM/SFC sequence in the previous section. Do not download xpsfilt.dll as a substitute for installing the Windows feature.

Fix 3: Repair the application that reports the error
If Windows Search and XPS features work but one third-party application fails, the application may have an incorrect dependency, damaged installation, or faulty DLL search path.
- Write down the exact executable or application named in the error.
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps, then Installed apps.
- Find the affected program.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Test the program.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Uninstall.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall the program using the developer’s official installer.
- Update the program before testing it again.
If the application has a launcher with Verify files, Repair installation, or a similar command, use that facility. Do not place a downloaded DLL beside the executable unless the software vendor explicitly documents that deployment model.
A poorly designed program can report xpsfilt.dll even when the actual missing item is another dependency. If reinstalling the application does not help, inspect its installation logs and Windows Event Viewer for the executable and module named in the failure.
Fix 4: Check antivirus quarantine
Security software can quarantine a damaged file or falsely identify a legitimate Windows file.
- Open your antivirus application.
- Open Protection history, Quarantine, or Detected threats.
- Search for
xpsfilt.dll. - Check the complete path and detection name.
- Update the antivirus definitions.
- Do not restore the file blindly.
- If the detection appears suspicious, run a full scan and, when available, an offline scan.
- After confirming the file belongs to the Microsoft Windows installation, follow with DISM and SFC.
A missing xpsfilt.dll does not by itself indicate malware. Conversely, a file having the correct name does not prove that it is genuine. Check its path, file properties, Microsoft digital signature, and relationship to the installed Windows build.
Fix 5: Check architecture and file location
A 32-bit application and a 64-bit Windows process may use different system locations. Do not copy a file between System32 and SysWOW64 to experiment.

To check Windows architecture:
- Open Settings.
- Select System.
- Select About.
- Read System type under Device specifications.
You can also check whether the expected files exist from Command Prompt:
dir "%SystemRoot%System32xpsfilt.dll"
dir "%SystemRoot%SysWOW64xpsfilt.dll"
An absent file should be repaired through DISM and SFC. A present file should be checked for a valid Microsoft signature and tested in the context of the program that failed. A file copied from another computer or Windows release may be the wrong architecture or build.

Fix 6: Investigate a printer or driver workflow
Do not assume that an XPS-related print error means xpsfilt.dll is part of the printer driver. First establish which program displays the message.
If the error occurs only when printing:
- Open Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices.
- Select Printers & scanners.
- Select the affected printer.
- Choose Printer properties and review the driver information.
- Install the printer manufacturer’s current driver for the exact Windows architecture, if available.
- Restart the Print Spooler through the Services application.
- Test with another application.
You can also inspect drivers through Device Manager:
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Printers, Print queues, or Universal Serial Bus controllers, depending on the device.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart and test.
The main difficulty here is identifying which of many installed drivers is stale and whether the printer software or Windows component is responsible. Should you run regsvr32 xpsfilt.dll
Usually, no.
regsvr32 is for DLLs that expose registration entry points such as DllRegisterServer. It is not a general-purpose repair command. Microsoft’s regsvr32 documentation and IFilter registration guidance describe registration for applicable custom components, not a blanket instruction to register every Windows DLL.

The module was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer was not found.
That message does not mean you need a replacement file. Do not manually register the DLL unless Microsoft or the relevant software vendor specifically instructs you to do so for that exact component.
Why downloading xpsfilt.dll is unsafe
Random DLL download sites can provide malware, the wrong architecture, an incompatible Windows build, or a file with an invalid signature. Even a clean-looking replacement may not repair the component store, dependencies, Windows Search registration, or the application that requested the DLL.
There is no official standalone xpsfilt.dll redistributable download. Use Windows Update, DISM, SFC, Optional features, matching Microsoft installation media, or the affected application’s official installer.

When deeper Windows repair is appropriate
If DISM and SFC cannot repair the problem:
- Back up personal files.
- Check Windows Update history for a failed or incomplete update.
- Consider System Restore if the problem began after a recent system change.
- Consider an in-place Windows repair installation when Windows itself remains unstable and supported servicing cannot restore the component.
- Use Windows recovery options only after understanding which applications and settings may be affected.
Microsoft describes available paths in its Windows recovery options.
If only one account experiences the error, create or test another local profile. If the second profile works, the result points to a profile-specific indexing or application configuration issue rather than proof that the DLL itself is missing.
Prevention
Keep Windows and the affected application updated. Avoid registry cleaners and “DLL fixer” utilities that remove files without understanding component ownership. Keep antivirus protection active, but review quarantine events before restoring system files. When deploying Windows machines, use matching installation media and avoid copying system DLLs between builds or architectures.
