Start with Taguan if you want Filipino voice acting with English subtitles, Until Then if readable English text is your priority, or the free itch.io prototypes Jeep Horror and Eye of the Moon if you want to try Filipino folklore at little or no cost. Check each store’s language table before downloading: English interface, full audio and subtitles are separate entries. For accessibility, text-first games are the safest documented option; dedicated screen-reader, remapping and color-blind controls are rarely published for this indie scene. Taguan explicitly warns about flashing lights and jumpscares, while Tales of the Aswang VR lists captions but requires a headset.

Which Filipino mythology game should you play first?

Your best starting point depends on the language and accessibility combination you need:

  • Filipino/Tagalog voices with English text: Taguan is released and inexpensive; Tindahan is the clearest advertised match but is still coming soon.
  • Maximum readable English: Until Then uses English interface and subtitles with written (not voiced) dialogue. Eye of the Moon is browser-based interactive fiction.
  • Aswang horror: Jeep Horror has an English-language tag and playable HTML5 and desktop builds. Tales of the Aswang VR adds English audio, subtitles and a Steam “Captions available” flag, but remains VR-only and coming soon.
  • Folklore creatures and puzzles: The Dreaded Hut uses baybayin seals and cleansing rites, although Steam lists English interface only; The Girl Who Sees teaches Tagalog vocabulary alongside its RPG story.
  • Bicolano mythology: Hablon Dawani is a 1.7 GB prototype about the rainbow goddess Dawani.

Until Then is culturally Filipino and set in Manila, but it is a coming-of-age magical-realism adventure rather than a monster-hunting game. Choosing it for its English text is sensible; choosing it specifically for aswang, tikbalang or bakunawa combat is not.

How do I check whether a game really has English subtitles?

Use the store’s language information rather than relying on a title, trailer or a single “English” tag. On Steam, the language table has three independent columns:

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • Interface: menus, HUD and system text.
  • Full Audio: languages with recorded dialogue.
  • Subtitles: translated or transcribed on-screen dialogue.

An English check in Interface does not guarantee an English subtitle track. The combination many English-speaking players want is Filipino or Tagalog in Full Audio and English in Subtitles. Tindahan’s developer states, “Tindahan currently features Tagalog voice acting with English subtitles,” while Taguan lists English interface and subtitles with Filipino voice-over.

After installing a Steam game, open its pause or main menu and look under Settings > Audio or Settings > Accessibility. Turn subtitles on, then look for font size, text scale and speaker-name options. Steam’s client language setting can also be set to English when the store lists English interface and subtitles.

itch.io pages are less standardized. A page may show only “Languages: English,” a description, or a download label. “Run game” launches HTML5 in your browser; “Download” usually provides a Windows, macOS, Linux, Android or APK build. Read the description and comments for language details instead of assuming that an English page means every line is subtitled.

What is the difference between subtitles and closed captions?

Subtitles normally transcribe or translate spoken dialogue. Closed captions add information such as [door creaks], music cues and other important sound effects, which is more useful when playing muted or when you are d/Deaf or hard of hearing. A game can have English subtitles without offering captions for non-speech sounds.

Tales of the Aswang VR is the clearest listing in this group: Steam marks “Captions available” in addition to English interface, audio and subtitles. For other games, treat the language table as a dialogue guarantee only. If you do not see a captions setting, do not assume that footsteps, alarms or off-screen attacks will be text-described.

Which games have the strongest English-subtitle and accessibility combinations?

How do I play Taguan with Filipino voices and English subtitles?

Taguan is the simplest buy-now example of the requested language stack. Murushii Studios explains that “Taguan” comes from tago, “to hide,” the Filipino term associated with hide-and-seek. The game is a short societal-horror walking simulator, generally advertised as taking an hour or more.

  1. Open the Steam page and confirm English under Interface and Subtitles and Filipino under Full Audio.
  2. Install the game and open Settings > Audio or Accessibility.
  3. Enable subtitles and increase text size if the build offers that control.
  4. Keep the Filipino voice track selected if you want the original performance, or mute it and read the English text.

Read the mature-content disclosure before purchase. It specifically mentions disturbing imagery, large fear-inducing objects, violence, blood, mild gore, jumpscares, flashing lights, self-harm themes and political or social issues. If flashing lights or sudden scares are unsafe, choose a text-first game instead. Steam reports 97% positive from 45 user reviews, but that rating is a store statistic, not an accessibility score.

Is Tindahan available now, and does it really have Tagalog voice acting?

Tindahan is listed as coming soon, so it is a wishlist rather than a buy-now recommendation. The first-person horror game follows Angel, who inherits a grandmother’s sari-sari store. Its Steam page explicitly states, “Tindahan currently features Tagalog voice acting with English subtitles,” and lists English subtitles for global players.

The language row also checks Filipino interface, full audio and subtitles, alongside English interface and subtitles. The stated Windows requirements are Windows 10, a GTX 1060, 8 GB of RAM and 3 GB of storage. Because the release build is not available, subtitle sizing, speaker labels, caption behavior and remapping should be treated as unknown.

Is Until Then a Filipino mythology game?

Not in the creature-focused sense. Until Then is a narrative adventure set in Manila, with Filipino culture and coming-of-age magical realism rather than a bestiary of aswang or tikbalang. It is nevertheless one of the easiest games in this group to follow in English: Steam lists English interface and subtitles, and journalist Jason Rodriguez noted that its dialogue is written rather than voiced.

The game launched on 25 June 2024 for Steam and PlayStation 5, has a Steam demo and a $19.99 list price. PCGamingWiki records a Filipino localization added on 22 November 2024. Valve’s Steam page reports 97% positive from 9,716 English-language user reviews and 96% positive from 396 recent reviews (figures accessed in 2026). Those figures describe player sentiment, not caption quality. The absence of spoken lines can be helpful for players who rely on text, while readers who need sound-effect descriptions should still look for a captions option.

What should I know before trying Tales of the Aswang VR?

Tales of the Aswang VR is the strongest documented captions match but is not a conventional monitor game. It is coming soon and requires SteamVR or an Oculus PC headset, tracked controllers and a suitable play area. The Steam listing specifies 10 GB of storage and a minimum Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060.

The story draws on oral traditions and books including Maximo Ramos’s Creatures of Philippine Lower Mythology and Luisa Igloria’s Cordillera Tales. Its protagonist Juno seeks the Kapre’s eyes; the page also names the manananggal, Pugot Mamu and duendes. Traditional instruments from Mindanao, the Visayas and Luzon are used in the music, and the project includes more than 90 minutes of developer commentary.

Steam lists English interface, full audio and subtitles and marks “Captions available.” That does not establish blind accessibility or comfort for motion-sensitive players. Climbing, first-person horror, tracked-controller interaction and sudden threats can be difficult for vestibular or photosensitive players even when captions are present.

Can I play Filipino folklore games for free on itch.io?

Yes. itch.io is the most useful source for prototypes, browser fiction and demos that do not appear as polished commercial releases on Steam.

Jeep Horror

Neuroticfly’s Jeep Horror places an aswang among passengers during a graveyard-shift jeepney ride. You use a rear-view mirror and holy water to identify or survive the threat. The page carries a Languages: English tag and offers HTML5, Windows, macOS, Linux and Android versions with keyboard, mouse and touch support. GameSpot reported in October 2026 that Jeep Horror and the studio’s Aswang Hunter both have public demos and are rooted in Filipino mythology. itch.io users rate Jeep Horror 4.7/5 from 49 ratings.

Hablon Dawani

This Ateneo de Naga University prototype follows Dawani, a weaver of Iraya who becomes a rainbow goddess. Bicolano figures include the cricket omen Korokoy and the deity Gugurang. Download the 1.7 GB Dawani 2.0.zip, extract it and launch the Hablon Dawani executable. Because the page does not publish a formal language table, verify text in the synopsis and be prepared for prototype-level polish.

Eye of the Moon

Eye of the Moon is English interactive fiction set in pre-colonial Kaluwalhatian, with Mayari, Apolaki, Tala and Dumakulem. Its total text is about 38,900 words, and chapter two was released on 10 April 2022. The HTML5 version runs in a browser and is inherently text-forward, but a visually impaired reader’s request for dark mode received only a promise that the author would try to accommodate it in a later chapter; a completed dark mode is not confirmed. The project’s last story progress update was in December 2022, and later community comments describe development as stalled. It remains a practical low-motion English reading option.

The Girl Who Sees

This English-language RPG is set in 1945 Mindanao during the Japanese occupation. Quina Laban encounters mythical creatures and a dwarf named Edgar while learning Tagalog words. Choose Discovery Mode for trivia-focused play if turn-based combat is a barrier; Battle Mode adds conventional encounters. The Windows and macOS download costs at least $8.99, with 439 MB and 386 MB archives respectively.

Does The Dreaded Hut have English subtitles?

Steam checks English for the interface but does not check Subtitles or Full Audio. That means menus may be in English, and unvoiced text may still be readable, but the store does not promise a dedicated subtitle track. Do not describe it as a confirmed English-subtitle game.

The released folk-horror title follows Ramon “Monching” Vergara into flood-stricken Sitio Malig to find his sister. Baybayin seals, cleansing rites and a traditional-instrument score give it a strong folklore identity. Steam shows 94% positive from 18 user reviews. Its list price is $11.99; GamingPH reported a PHP 360 launch price discounted from PHP 450, while the Steam available data showed a temporary $7.19 price (40% off, offer ending 2 November 2026). Prices and discounts change by region and date.

How do I use accessibility settings on Steam, itch.io, consoles and VR?

Steam on Windows, SteamOS or Linux

  1. Open the game’s store page and read Interface, Full Audio and Subtitles separately.
  2. Install the game. On first launch, open Settings > Language, Audio or Accessibility.
  3. Enable subtitles, increase font size or text scale and enable speaker labels when available.
  4. If the game has no in-game controls, Windows Magnifier, Color Filters and Narrator can enlarge or read some text-heavy interfaces. These operating-system tools cannot create missing captions or describe images.

itch.io browser and download builds

  1. Use Run game for HTML5 titles such as Eye of the Moon and the browser version of Jeep Horror.
  2. For a zip, extract it to a folder and launch the executable; check the page for operating-system-specific builds.
  3. Use browser zoom or operating-system magnification for text, and avoid assuming that a “Languages: English” tag means closed captions.

PlayStation 5

Until Then is confirmed on PS5. Use the console’s Accessibility and Subtitles settings in addition to any option inside the game. Console-level text enlargement may help menus, but it cannot add speaker labels or sound-effect captions that the game does not supply.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

VR

For Tales of the Aswang VR, confirm a SteamVR or Oculus PC headset, tracked controllers, room-scale or standing requirements and sufficient space before installing. Captions are listed, but a VR title should be treated as high-motion and high-threat if you have vestibular, photosensitivity or balance limitations.

What accessibility features are actually documented?

Public store pages for this set document language support more often than detailed accessibility menus. The reliable features are:

  • English subtitles marketed by Taguan and Tindahan.
  • Steam’s “Captions available” flag for Tales of the Aswang VR.
  • Written, text-first dialogue in Until Then and Eye of the Moon.
  • Flashing-light and jumpscare disclosure for Taguan.
  • Keyboard, mouse and touch input options for Jeep Horror.
  • Discovery Mode in The Girl Who Sees, which reduces the need for combat.

For most titles, no public documentation confirms screen-reader narration, color-blind palettes, full control remapping, hold-versus-toggle options, subtitle backgrounds, speaker identification, font-edge controls or audio description. Absence from a store page is not proof that a feature cannot exist in a later patch; it is a reason to verify with the developer before buying if that feature is essential.

Practical choices follow from the evidence: select text-first games for hearing access, use operating-system magnification for small text, avoid Taguan if flashing lights are unsafe, choose Discovery Mode when combat is a barrier, and approach VR and first-person horror cautiously for motion or photosensitivity concerns.

Which Filipino creatures and traditions appear in these games?

Aswang
Shapeshifting monsters are central to Jeep Horror and Tales of the Aswang VR. Neuroticfly’s Aswang Hunter also builds its premise around defending a family from one.
Kapre
A cigar-smoking tree giant. In Tales of the Aswang VR, Juno’s story involves recovering the Kapre’s eyes.
Manananggal, Pugot Mamu and duendes
These are named on the Tales of the Aswang VR store page.
Tikbalang
A half-human, half-horse figure. It appears in the Casa Caballero horror-playthrough context; Rappler also identifies a tikbalang in the 2003 game Anito: Defend a Land Enraged.
Bakunawa
A moon-eating serpent. The English-language tabletop adventure The Untold Legend of Bakunawa uses it as a beginner-friendly D&D 5e campaign premise.
Dawani, Gugurang and Korokoy
Bicolano figures in Hablon Dawani: Dawani is the rainbow-goddess protagonist, Gugurang is a deity and Korokoy is a cricket omen.
Babaylan
A shaman protagonist appears in the academic project Issa: Ang Babaylan, documented in an ACM ICIIT 2026 abstract. A public commercial release was not confirmed.
Baybayin
The pre-colonial Philippine script is used as a puzzle language in The Dreaded Hut.

What if I want a Filipino mythology game without a headset?

ENGKANTO is a physical tabletop RPG rather than a video game, so subtitles do not apply. Its Kickstarter describes an epic fantasy game set in pre-colonial Philippines with heroes and monsters of Filipino folklore; the campaign recorded 172 backers and AU$37,995 pledged. Accessibility depends on readable cards, English rules and the game master’s descriptions, making it a useful option for groups that prefer adjustable pacing and spoken explanation.

English-language tabletop campaigns such as The Untold Legend of Bakunawa offer another no-headset route. Here, the relevant access feature is an English-speaking game master who can repeat or describe scenes, not a caption toggle.

How should I choose between these games?

  1. Confirm the language stack: decide whether you need English text, Filipino voices, or closed captions for sound effects.
  2. Match the platform and input: Steam desktop, itch.io HTML5, Android, PS5, VR and tabletop have different control and setup demands.
  3. Check documented warnings: read Taguan’s flashing-light and jumpscare disclosure; treat VR and first-person horror as higher-motion options.
  4. Set expectations about mythology: choose creature-forward titles for aswang, kapre, tikbalang or bakunawa; choose Until Then for Filipino setting and readable narrative rather than monster combat.
  5. Check maturity and cost: released games have clearer support expectations, while prototypes and coming-soon projects may change language or accessibility features.

There is no peer-reviewed player-count census, regulator subtitle-compliance figure or independent accessibility scorecard for this specific group. Store language tables and developer statements are the appropriate evidence, and they should be rechecked because prices, language rows and release dates can change.

How we selected the recommendations

The choices above are based on six documented factors: language stack, platform and input method, published accessibility flags or warnings, playtime and price, depth of Filipino mythology versus culture-adjacent setting, and release maturity. No title was ranked from hands-on testing or an invented accessibility score.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are Filipino mythology games usually voiced in Tagalog?

Not consistently. Taguan and the upcoming Tindahan explicitly pair Filipino or Tagalog voice acting with English subtitles, while Until Then is primarily written dialogue and many itch.io prototypes publish only a general English label.

Can I play these games if I cannot read small text?

Try browser zoom, Windows Magnifier or console text-enlargement tools where available, then check whether the individual game offers text-size controls. Public pages rarely confirm subtitle backgrounds, font-edge settings or screen-reader narration, so verify with the developer when those controls are essential.

Which Filipino folklore game is suitable for a low-motion setup?

Eye of the Moon is browser-based interactive fiction, and Until Then is a text-heavy narrative adventure without voiced dialogue. Both avoid the headset movement of Tales of the Aswang VR and the first-person horror format used by several other recommendations.

Where can I learn Filipino words while playing?

The Girl Who Sees builds Tagalog vocabulary into its English RPG through collectible words and a translation dictionary. Its Discovery Mode presents trivia instead of requiring every player to use the combat system.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Are there Filipino mythology games in development that I can follow?

Tindahan and Tales of the Aswang VR are listed as coming soon on Steam. Issa: Ang Babaylan is documented as a 2026 academic project rather than a confirmed commercial release, so its availability and final accessibility features remain uncertain.

Product prices and availability are accurate as of the date/time indicated and are subject to change. Any price and availability information displayed on Amazon at the time of purchase will apply.
