Filipino mythology in games is best understood as a set of regional traditions being adapted in different ways, not as one fixed pantheon. Three documented examples show the range: Anito: Defend a Land Enraged includes a tikbalang encounter; Tales of the Aswang VR presents kapre, manananggal, pugot mamu and duendes but is still listed as coming soon; and Balik-Tao uses the manananggal’s divided-body motif in an HTML5 card-game demo. These works do not establish one universally “authentic” monster design. They show how developers translate oral, ethnographic and community-specific ideas into exploration, encounters and game mechanics.
Which Filipino mythology games are documented?
The clearest examples span a conventional role-playing game, an announced virtual-reality adventure and a playable browser prototype. Their formats and availability matter: a preview, a demo and a cited game appearance are different kinds of evidence.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Anito: Defend a Land Enraged | Role-playing game | Tikbalang | An indexed academic passage identifies a tikbalang encounter. | Further release, level and combat details are not established by the cited passage. |
| Tales of the Aswang VR | VR adventure | Kapre, manananggal, pugot mamu and duendes | The developer places the kapre at the protagonist’s journey and names the other beings as encounters. | Steam listing says coming soon and not yet available; it specifies VR controls and PC requirements. |
| Balik-Tao | HTML5 browser card game | Manananggal-inspired separated bodies | Players reconstruct parents whose winged and earthbound halves have split. | A browser demo is available; the full release remains in development. The demo has a solo player against computer players, not promised live multiplayer. |
This table is a map of documented adaptations, not a ranking of quality. No independently published statistic establishes how many Filipino-mythology games exist or how popular they are.
Is there one Filipino mythology?
No. Philippine traditions vary by language, island, community, collector and historical period. A Tagalog account, a Bicolano account and a Visayan account may use related names while assigning different powers, appearances or social meanings. Modern games make additional choices for plot and rules, so a creature shown in one title should not be treated as the definitive version.

That variation is not a minor footnote. It affects translation, creature design and the way a game frames a player’s actions. John Nathan Briones, lead writer and developer of the tabletop RPG Tadhana, summarized the design problem in an interview: “The monsters in our myth have different versions.” A responsible adaptation identifies which tradition or source it is drawing on, then marks its own inventions as inventions.
What is an aswang?
Aswang is better treated as an umbrella term or cluster than as one monster with a universal body plan. A folklore compendium describes several predatory and supernatural types under the wider category, while its Bicolano material distinguishes forms of asuwang. Names, behavior and vulnerabilities can therefore change between communities.
Games often need one readable enemy archetype, but that convenience can flatten the source traditions. Saying that every aswang has wings, hunts one particular victim or shares one weakness transfers details from a specific figure to a broad category. Keep the community and source attached to each description.
Is a manananggal an aswang?
A manananggal or related separating-body figure can be discussed within a wider aswang context, but the terms are not interchangeable in every account. The manananggal’s defining motif is the separation of an upper, often winged body from a lower body. Other aswang narratives do not necessarily use that anatomy.
Tales of the Aswang VR lists the manananggal among Juno’s encounters, using a named being as part of a VR adventure. Balik-Tao takes the same family of imagery in a very different direction: its hidden-role card-game premise asks players to reconstruct parents whose winged and earthbound halves have separated. The creator presents the game as hopeful rather than as a simple monster hunt. Its browser demo places one human player against computer players, so descriptions should not promise online live multiplayer.

How did the tikbalang become a horse-headed figure?
The familiar tall, horse-headed tikbalang is historically layered. A study of early records reports the name in a 1589 account without horse anatomy, descriptions involving other traits in 1613, and clearer equine details in later sources. This chronology does not prove the exact moment a horse head entered every oral tradition, nor does it establish a proposed foreign origin.

Historical wording and modern popular imagery should therefore be presented as stages in a record, not as a single unbroken design.
The tikbalang is commonly associated with confusing travelers or making them lose their way. That function can become an exploration problem, a deceptive guide or a confrontation. The indexed passage on Anito: Defend a Land Enraged documents a tikbalang encounter in the RPG, but the available evidence does not establish its level layout, combat system or release details. Those specifics should not be filled in from assumptions about other games.
What do diwata and anito mean?
Diwata and anito are context-dependent terms, not interchangeable translations for “fairy” or “idol.” Depending on the source and community, diwata can denote a deity or another powerful being. Anito can refer to an ancestral or spiritual presence and to related ritual contexts.
A game may turn either word into a character, quest giver or supernatural faction, but that presentation is a design choice. Readers should be told whether a title is drawing on a particular ethnographic account, combining several traditions or inventing a game-world category. Treating every diwata as a tiny European-style fairy, or every anito as a generic statue, erases the distinctions the terms carry in their own settings.

How do kapre, duendes and other beings appear in games?
The developer description for Tales of the Aswang VR places the kapre at the beginning of the protagonist’s journey and names pugot mamu and duendes as additional encounters. Because the listing is for a coming-soon VR title, these are announced contents rather than evidence of a currently playable release.
A documentary-series producer separately lists tikbalang, kapre, diwata, tiyanak, bakunawa and manananggal as folklore subjects. That catalogue should not be read as a list of creatures appearing in the VR game. It shows the breadth of topics covered by the series, not a shared game roster.
Bakunawa traditions include regional stories connecting the serpent or dragon figure with eclipses. The available evidence does not establish a particular bakunawa appearance in a video game, so an article or game guide should not imply one. The same rule applies to any creature whose presence is inferred only from a general folklore list.
What changes when folklore becomes a game mechanic?
Adaptation changes emphasis. A story can leave a creature mysterious, while a game must communicate what the player can see, do and risk. The documented examples use three different translations.

These differences also explain why “faithful” is not a single measurable standard. A game can preserve a name while changing the creature’s role, or preserve a motif while moving it from horror into cooperation. The useful questions are which community or source is acknowledged, which elements are changed, and whether the change is clear to players.

Which Filipino mythology projects can I access now?
Availability should be stated with each title rather than assumed from a trailer or store page.
- Tales of the Aswang VR: The Steam page describes a VR game and lists PC and VR requirements, but labels it coming soon and not yet available. A headset and compatible PC would be access requirements once the title launches; the listing does not make it playable today.
- Balik-Tao: The creator offers an HTML5 browser demo. The full game is still in development, and the demo’s computer opponents are not evidence of a live multiplayer service.
- Anito: Defend a Land Enraged: It remains a documented RPG example because an indexed academic passage identifies a tikbalang encounter. The cited material does not supply a current storefront or platform status, so availability should be checked separately rather than guessed.
What can a tabletop game show that video games cannot?
Tadhana is a tabletop RPG, not a video game, but it offers a useful comparison. In a 2017 interview, its team described playable aswang, diwata and tikbalang and discussed inventing or separating categories for its own setting. That openness demonstrates how designers can signal the boundary between inherited tradition and new rules.
Its classifications are game-world decisions, not proof that the folklore itself has one official taxonomy. Keeping Tadhana in a clearly labeled tabletop aside prevents a common error: turning every project that uses Filipino beings into a video-game release list.
How should players judge a respectful adaptation?
Start with attribution, not with a search for a single “correct” monster. Look for a named community, language, ethnographic source or creator explanation. Then check whether the game distinguishes inherited material from invented abilities, factions and weaknesses.
- Ask whose tradition is represented. “Filipino” is a national umbrella, not a substitute for a more precise community label.
- Separate categories. Do not make every aswang a manananggal, every diwata a fairy or every anito an idol.
- Read the mechanic as interpretation. A maze, card role or VR encounter expresses what the designer wants players to notice.
- Check status claims. Coming-soon pages, demos and tabletop campaigns should not be described as fully released video games.
- Preserve uncertainty. When historical records are translated or incomplete, say so instead of presenting a firm origin story.
Approached this way, games become entry points into multiple Philippine traditions rather than replacements for them. They can introduce a tikbalang’s wayfinding role, an aswang category’s internal diversity or a manananggal motif’s emotional possibilities while making clear where the developer has created something new.

Frequently Asked Questions
Why do Filipino creature names have different spellings?
Names move between Philippine languages, colonial-era records and modern English transliteration. A single being may therefore appear with variant vowels, doubled consonants or a different regional form; the spelling alone does not prove that two accounts describe identical traditions.
Are these creatures part of living belief or only old stories?
The answer depends on the community and on what “belief” means in a particular source. Oral tradition, family storytelling, ritual practice, academic collection and entertainment media preserve different kinds of evidence, so a game should not claim that all Filipinos share one current belief.
Why is the bakunawa often linked with eclipses?
Several regional traditions describe a serpent or dragon figure associated with the swallowing or darkening of celestial bodies. Those stories explain the eclipse motif, but they do not by themselves identify a specific game appearance or a single nationwide version of the bakunawa.
Can a game invent new powers for an aswang and still call the adaptation Filipino?
It can, provided the invention is signposted as part of the game’s setting rather than presented as universal folklore. Clear attribution lets players see which elements come from a named tradition and which serve the developer’s narrative or mechanics.
