No: Naoki Yoshida’s comments about a possible Final Fantasy IX remake were hypothetical, not an announcement. At a Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin in July 2026, he said remakes of games as large as Final Fantasy VI, VIII and IX might take four or five installments. That estimate described a possible scale; it did not confirm that an FFIX remake is approved or in development.
What Yoshida said about an FFIX remake in 2026
During an on-stage conversation with Final Fantasy VII Remake series director Naoki Hamaguchi at the July 2026 Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival in Berlin, Yoshida discussed the scale of remaking other entries in the series. He said Final Fantasy VI, VIII and IX were large games and that remakes might need four or five installments. Nintendo Life reported the remarks on July 28, 2026 (Nintendo Life); Time Extension reported the conversation on July 27, 2026, and translated Yoshida’s comment: “The scale is just immense. And the same applies for other titles like Final Fantasy VIII and Final Fantasy IX” (Time Extension).

“Four or five” was a hypothetical estimate of how much content a remake might involve, not a confirmed installment count, production plan or release schedule. Yoshida did not announce an FFIX project in those comments.

What Yoshida said in 2024—and what it does not establish
In a June 14, 2024 Final Fantasy XIV Producer Letter Live broadcast, Yoshida said, “私はべつに、9のリメイクは作っておりません”—translated as “I am not making a remake of IX.” Inside Games reported the statement on June 15, 2024 (Inside Games). The speculation at the time had followed discussion of unannounced Creative Studio III projects and the Final Fantasy IX elements in the Dawntrail expansion.

That statement addressed Yoshida’s own involvement. It does not establish whether another Square Enix team has considered or worked on a remake. The reports cited here do not include an official Square Enix announcement confirming an FFIX remake.
Do the FFIX references in Dawntrail mean a remake is coming?
No such connection was established. At Gamescom in 2024, Yoshida explained that Final Fantasy XIV was conceived as a “theme park” for the wider series, and that the team wanted to bring Final Fantasy IX into that spirit. He said the FFXIV content was not planned as a commercial tie-in to a remake. JPGAMES.DE published an English transcript of the interview on September 8, 2024 (JPGAMES.DE).

Yoshida said the team had not thought about incorporating Final Fantasy IX in relation to a remake; waiting for a remake before paying homage to the game would mean “waiting and waiting.” His explanation frames the FFXIV references as a franchise homage, not evidence that a remake was being marketed or coordinated.
