Square Enix’s FINAL FANTASY 40th Anniversary: THE CRYSTAL EDITION is a 16-track physical compilation with one selected song from each numbered mainline game, Final Fantasy I through Final Fantasy XVI. The CD and two-LP vinyl editions are scheduled for January 6, 2027. The Japanese listing prices the CD at ¥3,960 including tax and the vinyl at ¥8,800 including tax. Both formats contain the same chronological selection; the main choice is between a compact single disc and a larger four-sided vinyl presentation.
What is on the Final Fantasy 40th Anniversary album?
The compilation is a survey rather than a complete soundtrack box set. Square Enix’s published sequence assigns exactly one representative track to each numbered mainline entry, creating a 16-song journey from the original 1987 game to Final Fantasy XVI.

| Final Fantasy XIII | Blinded By Light |
| Final Fantasy XIV | Torn from the Heavens |
| Final Fantasy XV | Somnus (Instrumental Version) |
| Final Fantasy XVI | Away |
The choices combine recurring fan favorites with location, battle and character themes. Highlights include “One-Winged Angel,” “Zanarkand,” “Blinded By Light,” “Somnus (Instrumental Version)” and “Away,” while earlier entries are represented by pieces such as “The Rebel Army,” “Theme of Love” and “Searching for Friends.”
Why are there 16 tracks on a 40th-anniversary release?
The 16-track count follows the compilation’s stated rule: one song for every numbered mainline game from I to XVI. “40th Anniversary” identifies the series milestone, while the music selection stops at the current sixteenth numbered entry rather than attempting to represent 40 songs or every spin-off.

When does The Crystal Edition release?
Square Enix lists January 6, 2027, for both the CD and vinyl editions. The announcement does not establish separate regional release dates or preorder windows, so buyers outside Japan should use the relevant regional store listing for local timing.
What is the difference between the CD and vinyl editions?
| Edition | Physical format | Published Japanese price | Track coverage |
|---|---|---|---|
| CD | One CD in Digipak packaging | ¥3,960 including tax (¥3,600 before tax) | All 16 selections |
| Vinyl | Two 12-inch LP records, 33 1/3 rpm | ¥8,800 including tax (¥8,000 before tax) | All 16 selections |
The vinyl uses four sides: tracks for Final Fantasy I–VI appear on Side A, VII–X on Side B, XI–XIII on Side C, and XIV–XVI on Side D. That layout means a listener must change sides during playback, whereas the CD keeps the sequence on one disc. The two formats do not have different song lists.

Which format should you choose?
Choose the CD for compact, uninterrupted playback
The Digipak CD costs less in the Japanese listing and keeps all 16 tracks on one disc. It is the practical option for listeners who want the complete chronological program without handling multiple record sides or storing 12-inch sleeves.
Choose the vinyl for a larger physical presentation
The two-LP edition costs more and takes more shelf space, but its 12-inch format gives the release a more substantial collector-oriented presentation. That is a format preference rather than a difference in musical content: the official product information confirms the same selections on CD and vinyl.
