Final Fantasy VII Rebirth’s estimated Japanese physical retail sales fell from 262,656 copies in the February 26–March 3, 2024 chart week to 24,482 in March 4–10—a week-to-week decline of about 90.7%. Those are Famitsu estimates reported by Gematsu and Insider Gaming, not a count of digital purchases or worldwide sales.
How the 90% drop is calculated
Famitsu estimated 262,656 physical retail copies for the chart week of February 26–March 3, 2024, according to Gematsu’s report. For the following week, March 4–10, Famitsu estimated 24,482 copies, as reported by Insider Gaming.

| Japanese chart week | Estimated physical retail copies |
|---|---|
| February 26–March 3, 2024 | 262,656 (Famitsu estimate, reported by Gematsu) |
| March 4–10, 2024 | 24,482 (Famitsu estimate, reported by Insider Gaming) |
The second estimate is about 9.3% of the first. The difference between the two weekly estimates is approximately 90.7%, which is why the decline is described as “about 90%.”
What the figures do—and do not—count
This is a comparison of Japanese physical retail estimates for two successive chart weeks. It is not an all-format sales total: the figures do not include digital purchases, measure revenue, count players, or describe global sales. They are Famitsu estimates relayed by the named publications, not an official Square Enix global-sales disclosure.

Why the launch date matters
Square Enix announced a February 29, 2024 PS5 release for Rebirth, the second entry in the Final Fantasy VII Remake trilogy. The launch date fell inside the opening chart period of February 26–March 3, rather than at the start of a full chart week. Square Enix’s release announcement confirms the date and original platform context.

- Immerse yourself in the city of Midgar like never before, with improved textures, lighting, and background environments
- Players can switch between two game modes: o "Graphics Mode" prioritises 4K high-resolution graphics o "Performance Mode" prioritises smooth action at 60 frames per second
- Capture and share your memorable moments from the game with a fully customisable “Photo Mode”
- Players can enjoy immersive battles by using the DualSense PlayStation 5 controller with its haptic feedback integration
That calendar detail helps define the comparison: the first number covers a chart week that included launch, and the second covers the next chart week. The percentage is a week-to-week change between those reported periods, not a comparison of two complete seven-day stretches both measured from launch day.

Does the chart explain why sales fell?
No cause can be established from these two figures. They show that the estimated weekly physical retail count was much lower in the second chart week; by themselves, they do not explain why. They also cannot establish whether a similar change occurred in digital sales or in the complete Japanese market across formats.

Rebirth’s later platform releases
The chart figures concern the game’s original 2024 Japanese PS5 release period. They should not be treated as a count of sales on later platforms. Square Enix announced versions for Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S, and Windows for June 3, 2026, in its platform announcement. That announcement identifies the Switch 2 physical release as a game-key card and says its first production run includes a promotional Magic: The Gathering card.
