Generative AI can help game teams move from a rough concept to a playable prototype and expand a small project into a larger production. But the developers behind Final Fantasy, Chrono Trigger and the Mana series say the defining creative act—deciding what the game is, why it matters and when it is finished—still belongs to people.
That was the central message from Yoshinori Kitase, Hiromichi Tanaka and Kouichi Ishii in interviews marking the Mana series’ 35th anniversary. Their “0 to 1” argument is less a rejection of AI than a warning: efficiency only helps when human creators supply the idea, judgment and emotional point of view.

The veterans described AI as a production accelerator, not an autonomous creative director. It can reduce the labor involved in prototyping, programming support and repeated implementation, while the human team remains responsible for the original concept and the standards used to judge the result.
Kitase keeps the first creative step human
Yoshinori Kitase, identified in the anniversary coverage as a director of Chrono Trigger and Final Fantasy VII, VIII and X, and a producer on the original Kingdom Hearts, stated the boundary directly: “Humans need to be involved in the initial step of turning zero into one. That will never change. The next generation of creators absolutely needs the ability to turn zero into one.”

He separates that originating act from the large amount of work that follows. “During the process of turning one into a hundred,” Kitase said, AI and game engines could supplement traditional work so creators have more time to concentrate on the initial idea.
Tanaka stresses skill and copyright responsibility
Hiromichi Tanaka, a former Mana and SaGa developer, said the next generation’s prospects will depend on “how well people can master the use of AI.” He also warned that generated graphics require particular care around copyright. The comment treats AI literacy as a practical development skill, not as permission to remove authorship or legal review from production.

Kouichi Ishii, creator of the Mana series, focused on iteration. Faster prototypes can give a team more chances to test an idea, reject weak versions and refine what works. His warning was that a system doing everything by itself might produce a polished result that feels “like it’s missing human warmth.”
What does taking a game idea from 0 to 1 mean?
In this discussion, 0 to 1 means originating the game’s central concept and point of view: the decision about what experience the team is trying to create. The 1-to-100 phase is the subsequent expansion into systems, content, data and a complete release.

| Stage | Human responsibility | Where AI and engines can help | Main question |
|---|---|---|---|
| 0 to 1 | Invent the concept and define why it matters | Support exploration without replacing creative ownership | What should this game be? |
| 1 to 100 | Set priorities, critique results and decide what ships | Speed prototyping, implementation and production iteration | How can the idea become a finished game? |
The distinction explains why a faster pipeline does not automatically produce a meaningful game. If nobody owns the initial premise or evaluates whether each addition serves it, efficiency can simply create more content without a clear identity.
How did Secret of Mana’s development history shape this view?
The historical context comes from the same Square generation. Secret of Mana began as a project planned for Nintendo’s cancelled SNES CD add-on before being reworked as a standard cartridge game. Akira Toriyama was associated with the earlier concept, but ultimately worked on Chrono Trigger instead. The reversal shows how platform limits and project changes can redirect a major role-playing game.
The creators also described an earlier development environment with smaller teams and shorter production cycles than many modern blockbuster projects. Those constraints were not simple or effortless; they forced teams to make broad decisions, solve problems quickly and change direction when necessary.
A translated transcript adds that Kitase helped convert Ishii’s broad plans into game data. It presents Ishii’s contribution as the 0-to-1 invention and Kitase’s work as the expansion from 1 to 100. That account is secondary corroboration, but it illustrates the division of creative ownership and production execution that the interview applies to AI.

Can AI and game engines make development easier for small teams?
Kitase compares AI-assisted production with the foundation already supplied by engines such as Unity and Unreal Engine. Small teams no longer need to build every technical layer from scratch, and less-experienced creators can use those foundations to complete games and gain practical experience.
AI can extend that advantage by shortening the path to a prototype or by helping with repetitive implementation. The benefit is greatest when the saved time is spent on playtesting, criticism and revision rather than on generating more unexamined material.
- Prototype sooner: Use assisted tools to reach a playable test instead of debating an idea indefinitely.
- Keep decisions visible: Record why a mechanic, visual style or story direction was chosen so the team can judge later changes against the original intent.
- Review generated graphics carefully: Tanaka’s copyright warning applies especially to art created from uncertain sources or prompts.
- Reserve time for rejection: Ishii’s point is not just to make more versions, but to test and discard versions that do not communicate the intended experience.
Will AI replace game developers?
The veterans’ answer is no, because automation does not decide what a game should mean or provide the human warmth that makes a finished work feel authored. AI may reduce the amount of labor required to implement an idea, but someone must still originate the idea, choose among alternatives and accept responsibility for the final result.
Kitase’s example was personal rather than technical: he tried using AI to draft a speech for his eldest son’s wedding, found that the text lacked flavor, and wrote the speech himself. The example does not prove that AI cannot draft prose; it shows why sincerity and authorship can matter more than surface polish in a work meant to express a specific person’s feelings.

What should modern developers learn from the 0-to-1 argument?
The practical lesson is to treat AI fluency as one part of a broader creative discipline. A team that can operate tools but cannot articulate its game’s purpose may move quickly in the wrong direction.
- State the core experience in plain language. Define the player promise before asking a tool to generate mechanics, art or code.
- Build a small proof of the idea. Use engines and AI assistance to make the central interaction playable as early as possible.
- Test with enough time to change course. Rapid output is useful only when the schedule leaves room to reject weak results.
- Protect authorship and rights. Track the origin and permissions of generated graphics and make a human decision about what belongs in the release.
- Judge warmth as well as polish. A technically finished game still needs a distinctive voice and a reason for players to care.
Why this matters as the industry adopts AI
The Famitsu interview and Square Enix’s creator roundtable, with an English-subtitled version reported in September 2026, connect current AI debates to a concrete development history. The same creators who worked through hardware changes, cancelled plans and tight production conditions are not arguing for a return to older limitations. They are arguing that constraints and tools are valuable only when people use them to make clear creative choices.

For modern teams, “0 to 1” is therefore a capability to cultivate, not a stage to outsource. AI can help carry a strong idea farther, but it cannot supply the reason that idea deserves to become a game.

Does the copyright warning apply to every use of AI in a game?
Tanaka’s warning specifically calls for care with generated graphics. It does not establish that every AI-assisted task is unlawful; teams still need to verify the source, permissions and applicable rules for each asset they use.
Why did Kitase write his son’s wedding speech without AI?
He tested an AI-generated draft and felt it lacked the personal flavor he wanted, so he wrote the speech himself. The anecdote is about sincerity and authorship, not a claim that AI cannot produce grammatically correct or serviceable text.
What is the safest way for a small studio to start using AI?
Begin with a narrowly defined prototype and keep a person responsible for the concept, review and release decision. Engine tools can provide technical foundations, but the studio should document creative choices and check generated assets before shipping.
