Start Final Fantasy Resonance by learning its timeline combat and keeping your Vision abilities focused. Advance the opening objective far enough to reveal each area’s systems, clear nearby story-linked side quests, and postpone the Colosseum, Chamber of Arms, Gilgamesh, and Ultima Weapon until your party has stronger Vision combinations. In battle, read the action order, exploit weaknesses to stagger enemies, then use the extra turns and Resonance attacks created by the break.
What to do first in Final Fantasy Resonance
Final Fantasy Resonance launches on October 22, 2026, with versions listed for PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch 2. It is Square Enix’s first HD-2D Final Fantasy game, drawing on the first story arc of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius while rebuilding that material as a full console-style role-playing game rather than simply transferring the mobile presentation.

Your first hours are easiest when you use a deliberate rhythm instead of choosing between “only story” and “complete everything.” Push the main objective until the local systems and routes are available, sweep the side quests that are already within reach, and then continue the next major story beat. This reveals the game’s mechanics without leaving useful rewards behind or wasting time on encounters intended for a stronger party.

- Follow the main objective into a new area. Stop when the game exposes the area’s activities, combat options, or progression systems. Do not spend your first minutes trying to force access to every path.
- Check the nearby quest markers. Complete accessible quests tied to the current story region, especially those that can contribute to esper unlocks.
- Enter fights with the timeline visible. Identify the coming enemy actions and the party member whose available abilities match the current weakness.
- Build stagger deliberately. Use weakness hits to break an enemy’s defenses, then take the extra turns and trigger Resonance attacks while the opening lasts.
- Review Visions after meaningful rewards. When a Vision teaches a useful ability, check whether that ability can be retained under another active Vision without exceeding its cost limit.
- Record unfinished quests. Keep a short list of side activities that may unlock espers or lead to optional challenge areas, then return after your next substantial upgrade.
This routine gives you regular power increases while preserving a clear story route. The game does not publish a complete time budget or a definitive chapter-by-chapter unlock schedule, so use the appearance of a quest, system, or challenge as your signal rather than trying to follow an unverified checklist.

How the turn-based timeline combat works
Resonance uses turn-based battles organized around a visible action timeline. The order tells you which party members and enemies are about to act, allowing you to choose between immediate damage, a weakness setup, defense, or a turn-saving action. The timeline is not decorative: it is the information you use to create safe stagger windows.
Read the next actions before selecting an ability
- Look for the next enemy action and decide whether it must be interrupted, weakened, or endured.
- Check which character can exploit the enemy’s exposed weakness with an ability you can afford under the current Vision.
- Consider whether spending a turn now creates a longer advantage than using your strongest available attack immediately.
- Keep at least one option available for a second target or a changed weakness instead of emptying every resource on the first action.
This approach matters most in encounters where an enemy’s next turn would remove a character or undo your setup. A slightly weaker attack that advances a stagger can be more valuable than a larger neutral hit that leaves the timeline unchanged.
Exploit weaknesses to create a break
Hitting a weakness pressures an enemy toward stagger. When the defense breaks, the battle gives you extra turns and access to powerful Resonance attacks. Those turns are your main burst window: coordinate the party around the break rather than treating each character as an independent damage dealer.

- Identify the weakness shown for the current enemy.
- Use the lowest-cost reliable option that advances the stagger without compromising the timeline.
- Watch for the break and immediately reassess the upcoming action order.
- Spend the extra turns on high-value attacks or support effects that benefit from the opening.
- Trigger a Resonance attack when the party’s setup and available targets make the cinematic strike worthwhile.
Do not spend every ability simply because it is available. A stagger window is strongest when you have enough cost and the right ability package to exploit it. If the enemy is close to breaking, conserve an appropriate attack rather than filling the turn with unrelated effects.
What Resonance attacks are for
Resonance attacks are the payoff for smart weakness targeting and stagger timing. They are most useful when the break has created extra turns and the party can combine those turns into concentrated damage. Use them as part of a planned sequence, not as a button to press at the start of every battle.
Visions and abilities: the system that shapes your early builds
Visions are Resonance’s central loadout system. Character events and Vision crystal sanctums provide Visions, and battles unlock abilities associated with them. A Vision therefore represents more than a cosmetic choice: it determines the ability package and the cost budget available to the character.
Learn an ability once, then check other Visions
After a character learns an ability from a Vision, that ability can remain equipped while a different Vision is active, provided the total cost stays within the active Vision’s limit. This lets you combine abilities from multiple Visions instead of being locked to one package forever.

- Acquire a Vision from a character event or a Vision crystal sanctum.
- Use battles to unlock the abilities attached to that Vision.
- Open the character’s ability or Vision loadout screen after learning something useful.
- Switch to another Vision and test whether the learned ability fits its cost limit.
- Remove lower-value abilities when the total cost exceeds the limit, then keep the combination that supports the encounter you expect next.
Why cost is the early build constraint
The cost limit is the practical restriction that defines early customization. You will usually gain more appealing abilities than you can equip at once, so spreading points across every available effect produces a weaker character than selecting a small, complementary set.
- Prioritize weakness coverage. Keep an affordable option for the elements or damage types your next area commonly demands.
- Pair setup with payoff. An ability that helps stagger should support an attack that benefits from the break.
- Preserve a defensive or utility slot. A build that only deals damage can fail when the timeline shows an unavoidable threat.
- Change the Vision for the encounter. A different ability package may be more valuable than forcing your usual setup into an unfavorable fight.
There is no documented universal “best” Vision combination. The strongest choice depends on the enemy weakness, the timeline, and which abilities you have actually unlocked. Treat the cost limit as a reason to edit your loadout, not as a reason to chase every ability immediately.
Gear: what to prioritize when exact item rankings are unknown
Official material emphasizes Visions and their cost-limited abilities as the documented customization system. It does not establish a complete list of best weapons, armor, stat breakpoints, or item-by-item rankings. Avoid building your run around an invented tier list.
A practical gear rule
- Equip the strongest clearly appropriate weapon or armor you have obtained for the current region.
- Prefer equipment that keeps a character alive long enough to take the timeline turns needed for a stagger.
- Use Visions to fill weakness and role gaps rather than expecting gear alone to solve an encounter.
- Revisit your equipment after story rewards, quest rewards, and major exploration finds; do not spend excessive time optimizing every minor upgrade.
When a fight feels difficult, first check whether the problem is a mismatched Vision or an ignored weakness. The documented system gives you more reliable control through ability selection and cost management than through speculative stat thresholds.

Managing your time: the two-pass route
Use two passes through each region. The first pass combines story progress, nearby quests, and system unlocks. The second pass is for difficult optional content that becomes reasonable after your party has better gear, more learned abilities, and stronger Vision combinations.
Pass one: progress and accessible rewards
- Advance until the area’s main systems and routes are open.
- Take every side quest that is clearly connected to the current story region and within your present capability.
- Complete quests that may contribute to esper progression before leaving the area.
- Use ordinary battles to learn enemy weaknesses and unlock abilities, but avoid unnecessary grinding when the timeline and loadout are already under control.
- Continue the main objective once nearby, story-linked content is complete.
Pass two: deliberate return trips
Return after meaningful upgrades rather than repeatedly testing a challenge that is draining resources. Recheck unfinished quests, newly accessible routes, and optional battles when a stronger Vision package gives you a clear advantage.
This route is an editorial recommendation based on the documented existence of the game’s optional challenges; the official pages do not provide a complete time budget or exact unlock calendar. If a quest is available and clearly rewards progression toward an esper, it belongs in the first pass. If an activity is framed as a formidable or optional fight, reserve it for the second.

Side content and what to do with it
Side content is not one uniform category. Some quests support progression and can unlock espers; other activities are challenge tracks or secret encounters designed for return visits.

How to decide whether to stop for a quest
- Stop now when the quest is nearby, story-linked, and likely to advance esper access or a system you are currently learning.
- Mark it for later when the route is open but the enemies clearly outclass your current Vision and gear setup.
- Return after upgrades when the activity is described as a secret, sealed battle, colosseum challenge, or formidable foe.
Keeping a short unfinished-quest list prevents two common wastes: abandoning useful progression because you forgot where it began, and repeatedly revisiting a challenge before your abilities can support a reliable stagger plan.
How to build a party for ordinary encounters
Because the documented customization centers on Visions and abilities, build around complementary functions rather than fixed labels or unverified character rankings.
Cover the current weakness
At least one active character should have an affordable ability that targets the weakness you are seeing. If one Vision’s package cannot provide it within the cost limit, test another Vision rather than forcing a high-cost combination.
Give each turn a job
- One action advances the stagger or exploits a weakness.
- Another preserves the party through defense, recovery, or utility when the timeline demands it.
- A third capitalizes on a break with concentrated damage or a Resonance attack.
These jobs can move between characters as you learn more abilities. The point is to make the timeline readable: you should know which action creates the opening and which action spends it.
Change the loadout instead of grinding by default
If a battle is repeatedly going wrong, inspect the active Vision, cost total, and weakness coverage before adding levels through repeated fights. A legal, complementary ability set often solves a problem that raw experience cannot.

Symptom: The loadout exceeds the Vision’s cost limit or contains several effects that do not work together.
Fix: Keep a small package: weakness coverage, a stagger or setup tool, a payoff attack, and only the utility you can afford.

Symptom: An enemy acts before your planned break, or a character is defeated while you use an otherwise powerful attack.
Fix: Read the upcoming order before every important action. Choose the move that changes the next few turns, not merely the move with the largest displayed damage.
