In Final Fantasy Tactics: The Ivalice Chronicles, Bravery mainly affects reaction abilities and has a trade-off for finding hidden items; Faith strengthens magic and its effects, but also increases magical vulnerability. Faith has an additional risk at 95 or higher: a unit may leave the army. These stats serve different purposes, so the useful value depends on a unit’s role—not on making every character’s numbers as high as possible.
What Bravery and Faith affect
Bravery and Faith are not general-purpose measures of strength. Bravery is chiefly relevant to reaction abilities and certain combat or item outcomes. Faith governs magical power and spell effects, both when a unit casts magic and when magic is used against it.
How Bravery works
Reaction abilities and hidden items
According to Scott White’s RPG Site guide published October 1, 2025, higher Bravery is generally useful for reaction abilities. It is not an unconditional benefit: the guide says high Bravery makes rare hidden battlefield finds harder to locate.
Very low Bravery
The same guide warns that single-digit Bravery can cause a unit to become a chicken. If the battle ends before the unit recovers, it may be lost. That makes very low Bravery a more serious risk than simply having a weaker reaction ability.

Temporary increases and carryover
The guide reports that temporary Bravery increases carry over after battle at a rate of four temporary points for one base point. It names the Orator ability Praise and Ramza’s Steel as ways to raise Bravery during combat. This is the guide’s reported carryover rule; it is not an independently verified formula for every release of Final Fantasy Tactics.
How Faith works
Magic dealt and received
Higher Faith strengthens magical damage and increases the success rate of spells that apply beneficial or negative effects. The same exposure works in reverse: a high-Faith unit is also more vulnerable to magic used against it.

That trade-off makes Faith a role decision. A unit that regularly casts spells may benefit from more Faith, while a frontline character often targeted by enemy magic may be better served by less. Raising Faith is not a free upgrade to a party member’s overall power.
The 95 Faith risk
White’s guide warns that at Faith 95 or higher, a unit risks leaving the army. Treat that as a ceiling-related cost when adjusting a regular party member; the cited guide does not establish exceptions for particular characters or monsters.

Should you optimize these stats?
Only if the trade-offs suit how you use the unit. For a magic specialist, greater Faith can improve both damage and spell-effect reliability, at the cost of taking more damage from magic and approaching the guide’s departure-risk threshold. For a unit built around reaction abilities, greater Bravery can help, but the hidden-item trade-off remains. Very low Bravery carries the chicken and potential loss risk.
White notes that Bravery and Faith optimization is not necessarily something players need to worry about in a casual playthrough. The practical takeaway is to avoid extreme values unless you understand the consequences, rather than turning stat adjustment into a requirement for every party member.

Which version is The Ivalice Chronicles?
Square Enix presents The Ivalice Chronicles in two versions: an enhanced version with improved graphics, voiced dialogue, refined gameplay, and a Squire difficulty setting; and a classic version with the original 1997 graphics and gameplay alongside the War of the Lions translation. The Bravery and Faith details above are attributed to a guide specifically about The Ivalice Chronicles; the sources cited here do not establish that every older release or later patch uses identical formulas.
