Current status: FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles launched on September 30, 2025, so this is a retrospective preview of what the enhanced edition changes—not a look ahead to an unreleased game. Square Enix calls it an enhanced edition of the 1997 game, rather than formally labeling it a remake.
The update’s appeal is its two-sided approach: the enhanced version adds voice acting, revised script, visual and interface improvements, and tactical conveniences, while a classic version preserves a more nostalgic route into Ivalice. Neither mode replaces the underlying turn-based strategy built around terrain, positioning, turn order, jobs, and abilities.

What kind of game is The Ivalice Chronicles?
FINAL FANTASY TACTICS – The Ivalice Chronicles is a single-player strategy RPG based on the 1997 Final Fantasy Tactics. Battles unfold in turns across maps where terrain, unit placement, and turn order matter. Its job system lets players shape characters and combine learned skills: Square Enix describes more than 20 jobs and more than 300 abilities, including jobs such as black mage, dragoon, geomancer, summoner, time mage, and thief. Square Enix’s announcement provides those figures.
That foundation is the reason the update’s polish matters. Tactical RPGs can be demanding not only because battles require planning, but because players must understand a party’s options and keep track of the battlefield. The new edition adds tools and presentation improvements around that core rather than claiming to rebuild it from the ground up.

What changes in the enhanced version?
Square Enix lists full voice acting, an enriched and revised script, improved graphics, and a revamped user interface among the enhanced edition’s changes. It also adds difficulty options, autosave, tactical-view scouting, battle fast-forward, and additional character conversations. These features address different kinds of friction: voice and script updates refresh how the story is delivered; scouting and fast-forward help with battle flow; autosave reduces the risk of losing progress.
The available official feature descriptions do not establish that the combat system has been comprehensively redesigned. The safer expectation is a more accessible and polished presentation of the classic tactical experience, not a new ruleset that discards its strategic identity.
Enhanced or classic: which version should you choose?
Both versions are included. The enhanced version is the natural choice for players who want voice acting, updated presentation, and the added convenience features. The classic version is intended for those who want a more nostalgic recreation of the 1997 release; Square Enix says it uses the War of the Lions translation. The publisher described it in its June 2025 announcement as “a nostalgic recreation of the game, developed for players who want to experience the original FINAL FANTASY TACTICS from 1997.”

This dual-mode approach is the release’s clearest answer to the tension between modernization and fidelity. You are not forced to accept every update to access the original game’s tactical structure, nor does choosing the classic presentation mean the enhanced version is absent.
What story does it tell?
The story takes place in Ivalice, a medieval kingdom unsettled by political conflict and class divisions in the wake of the Fifty Years’ War. Ramza Beoulve, a young noble whose place in history has been obscured, and his childhood companion Delita are drawn into a struggle involving rival noble houses and the forces shaping the kingdom.
Several original contributors returned for the enhanced edition: director Kazutoyo Maehiro, art director Hiroshi Minagawa, and scenario writer and editor Yasumi Matsuno. Square Enix also names Shoichi Matsuzawa as producer and Ayako Yokoyama as co-director. Their involvement provides continuity, but does not mean the entire original development team returned.

Does the update preserve the strategic appeal?
The documented changes point to an edition designed to make a dense, single-player tactical RPG easier to approach without removing its central appeal. Jobs and ability combinations still offer room to build characters around different roles, while terrain, positioning, and turn order remain the stated pillars of battle. Autosave, scouting, fast-forward, difficulty choices, and the option to play in classic mode give players more control over how they engage with that structure.
That is a credible kind of modernization for a long-running strategy game: reduce friction around the experience, offer a refreshed presentation, and retain a route to the original’s feel. Whether the revised script, visuals, and interface suit an individual player is a matter of preference; the supported distinction is that the game offers both an enhanced treatment and a classic alternative.
